Food reviews - Singapore LA PETITE CUISINE 5 September 2011

PRICE: $$$
RATING:*****

You would assume that French food would be uber expensive. Especially if it’s authentically whipped up by a French chef and constantly popular. Not the case with La Petite Cuisine, a perfectly unpretentious French cafe with affordable prices.

The cafe is fast becoming one of my favourite go-to places, as it works both as a great lunch time playdate with girl friends as well as a quiet evening meal. I find the staff quirky and funny, and they’ve always been pleasant to me despite some reports online that their service is a bit sullen.

They’re run like a bistro, where you place your order at the counter and then take a seat (very few tables, so arrive early before the lunch/dinner crowd!). The food arrives swiftly and man, their French chef is a bit of a Superman in the kitchen. He both whips up food at lightning speed (we spotted him working about 8 different saucepans at the same time), and manages to get the food right every single time. Everything is always cooked to perfection, and always the same. Ahhh I love dependable, good food.

I’m a huge fan of their Escargots (6pcs) served in a croissant & salad (SG$12.00). The escargots are plump and stuffed inside a soft buttery croissant, and topped with a luscious garlic-butter gravy. It’s heavenly. An absolute must-order, and a lovely take on the standard escargots in garlic butter.

Of course, I always order the Confit de canard w cheese potato gratin (SG$15.00). The duck leg is always tender and plump, sitting in a tasty gravy reduction. I normally don’t really like potato gratins as I find them rather bland, but this one is addictive. Beautiful soft slivers of potato in a creamy cheese sauce that’s not too heavy.

And, as luck would have it, Island Creamery is just next door. Gourmet ice creams are all the rage in Singapore – which offer a huge range of unique flavours that ‘regular’ ice cream joints like Haagen Daaz just cannot compete with.

This time, I tried the Cendol ice cream because it looked so unique – it was not too sweet and I really liked the cendol bits whipped into the ice cream. I also had the Reverso ice cream and this one by far is my favourite at Island Creamery – if I’m not wrong it’s chocolate biscuit whipped into rich chocolate ice cream. Uh, need I really say more??? 😉

Fabulous French food, topped off with unsually-flavoured ice cream. Yum!

Please keep at the food reviews (even though Hunter does keep things busy!) as I’m 100% going to be referring to them as my only go to when I’m in S’pore for work for a few months. I will be super lost knowing nothing/no one else! So glad there is this great French option..nom nom
