erm… I know for one thing that hamsters are totally allergic and intolerable to a diet with choclate. These animals are not able to digest the chocolate as well as we do and they die becase the chocs built up and block their ventilating system. They kinda suffocate to death. I remember my vet/pet-shop owner telling me NOT to feed my hamsters with choc. erm.. I presume mice and hamsters are about the same? I don;t know but it could be that. Although for hamsters, a dose of choc would be lethal (I think). So it may not have been the chocs.. Starvation maybe??
Re: oh man!
wow really?! I used to always have hamsters when I was a kid, but I never fed them chocolate – thank goodness I didn’t. I’ve had lots of mice though and always fed them chocolate as treats and stuff – usually a piece 1/3 the size of my pinky fingernail, about 1-2x a week. I hope that wasn’t overload or something :T
So sorry about your Pepsi Beverly. You described her life so sweetly…

Chocolate may be toxic to rodents in large amounts, although I have not seen the research. There is no need to feed chocolate to mice anyway – they would prefer sunflower seeds.
erm…build up of chocolate?
Ack.. I hope not! pepsi never really liked sunflower seeds, which was weird cos all my previous mice went nuts for them. If I get another mouse, I won’t feed it chocolate or cheese anymore :T
1.13 How long do mice live?
The lifespan of mice is hard to predict. As a rough guide, between 1 and 2 years is a typical lifespan, although by giving your mice a good diet and lifestyle you may be able to give them some extra time. Occasionally mice live to 3 or more; the world record holder lived to 7 according to one source! You will probably come across many different estimates of the average mouse lifespan; some veterinary and laboratory manuals state that it is three years, but I have never seen any research to support this.
she probably reached the end of her lifespan already. don’t worry too much.
All my previous mice lived about 1-2 years.. but they were all doddery and frail when they died so it was obviously of old age. But even though Pepsi was old, she was still crazy and frisky and never acted old! It’s so sad.. I wish cloning was a common thing, then I could clone her!
π
Chocolate…
Chocolate… that’s probably why she died so soon, not a healthy diet, especially for little mousies π
Re: Chocolate…
That’s what I thought, but we didn’t give her that much, prolly only 1-2x a week max.. ‘cos it’s just as bad for mice as it is for humans π She liked rice though, and I figured that wasn’t bad for her so I fed her 1-2 grains every time I had it.. so about 3 times a week. I’m thinking maybe the starch in rice is bad for mousies?!
