Bev, you can file for a tax file number, and you wouldn’t have to pay that much tax. I’m very sure of that.
Hey Del π I DO have a TFN! But I’m hoping that they credit my account with the stuff I claimed, ‘cos then I”d have to pay $100 instead of $200 tax, which is a lot better..
death and taxes
remember, these are the two things you can not avoid and if you can’t afford the one, the other won’t come to save you until you are happy and rich.
me, i was just informed that i will be charged 6,000 US. dollars for the physical therapy i am going through now. I’m 39 and just had a total right hip replacement on July 24th.
So i am paying these really beautiful women in their twenties. (all of them to a one are thin with great curves and magnificent tushies, small breasts and very long hair. I wish i was healthy and strong instead of a patient) 6,000 bucks american to abuse the hell out me physically for an hour a day, 3 days a week.
you figure at that price they could be naked, or wear only their panties and bras or have the common decency to dress in something leather and call me names while i grunt and groan. π
the only good news is that my insurance company will be spending some 400 thousand for the rest of the medical costs and i won’t!
God Bless America…!
hope
if u earn under 600 a year-u get taxed less-a way out
but if u know an accoutant or anyone in the finance industry-talk to them..u can get out of it in so many ways…
try buying shares..be a shareholder …
try donating money – u’ll get it back-some-probably more than what u have to pay…
if u drive- put your car/petrol use as an item..great for tax purposes…etc
Re: hope
I was wondering.. you know when you file for a tax return? I claimed about $100 worth of stuff. Has that already been deducted from the tax bill I was just sent, or will that be deposited into my bank account separately? ‘cos if I DO get that tax return, it’ll make it a lot better!

hmm….call up the tax office and get your TFN registered. and also your status as RESIDENT – very very important. with those, the first $600 is tax exempt. only the subsequent dough is. and i think the tax is 45-48%?
but give them a call and check.
also get your old payslips and check how much you’ve been taxed there too…
Really?? So as an international student I’m still exempted from tax if it’s under $600? How much is charged above $600? you’ve given me hope.. I’ll definitely call ’em on Mon π Thanks so much!
im not sure how wat the tax is for over $600. dun’t think i earned enuff to get taxed for that!
and yes yes yes!!! for taxation purposes you are a resident of australia you silly goose!! that’s what your TFN is for!
In the US tax kinda depends on what state you live in. In Washington state you have 7.7% sales tax [on anything but food that you buy] but no income tax. In Oregon you have no sales tax but like 10% income tax.
Then there are people like me who go across the river to Oregon to do their shopping to avoid sales tax! And when I get a job it will be in Washington… Heeheehee I am quite evil no?
NO WAY, that is *smart* and not evil at all! YOu’re so lucky to have the best of both worlds.. I’m jealous π
in the US there is also a national income tax though.. in texas you’re lucky to not have to pay 2 income taxes
there’s also a property tax in some states. We have a really really steep property tax.
ugg it’s just yucky. A tax on everything pretty much
-linda
But there’s also federal taxes which are a percentage of your pay regardless of where you live. All the taxes get taken out of your paycheck though (besides sales tax, which doesn’t count–it’s like property tax, you only pay it if you own property) and at the end of the year sometimes you get money back and sometimes you owe money.
Hi! I worked for about two months in the summer hols in Oz before and I earned about AUD6000+ but I think the tax was deducted from my pay so I didn’t have to pay at another time. I got a tax return of AUD800+ a few months later too. I was an international student at that time too. Hmm..is this because you didn’t tick off where it says “file tax as resident”? I am not too sure…can always phone up the office to ask, I guess.
Really? Hrmm.. I wonder if there’s a way around it.. Maybe I’ll call the Tax office on Monday and see if they can help out! It’s cool you got the tax return though, maybe they’ll decide to give me some money back? *crosses fingers*
They always give back tax returns coz at the time of taxing, they will invariably tax more so they will give you back the remaining money. It’s a good idea to call and ask π
Whee! YOu just made me feel a *lot* better.. I’ll go call and ask on Monday :))
yeap, think you should call them to check, bev. cos’ i remember when i attended the tax file number talk, the speaker kept stressing to us to check “resident” since we were staying for more than a number of months. π
not much help here…
I really should know about tax affairs but sadly I’m quite blur about these things. What I do know is that UK’s income tax is higher than in the US, like 50% or something, for UK citizens.
I pay a whole lot more taxes than my US friends. I don’t have many international friends to compare with. In my college, being on financial aid means you get a smaller tax deduct than those not on FinAid.
I *think* — totally do not know for sure on this one — that for international students you don’t get a tax deduction until you make a certain amount of money in a year, like US$1000 or something.
This means I really should pay more attention during those talks about tax forms…I do file for tax returns and some money back though.
Re: not much help here…
D’oh! So US is better for international students than here.. Here they assume international students are rich or something, that’s why they mercilessly tax the living crap out of them. AND I’m only allowed to work 20hrs, so it’s like a double-edge sword. *grumble*….
it’s a bit silly that they expect you to pay tax after you’ve spent all your money, i thought normally tax was deducted from your wages or whatever (or maybe that’s just here), do they really think people will set aside money ($200+!) to pay for tax?!
No kidding! I really didn’t expect to pay that much tax so it’s a bit overwhelming..
I’m glad people agree and understand though – I was worried I might come across as ungrateful or something. I mean, I do understand why I should be taxed, but because I already pay more than normal for *everything* else AND I’m only allowed to work 20hrs a week AND I’m classified as a student, I thought they wouldn’t come down so hard on making me give back 1/4 of my pay :T
typical
yes that is rough
i myself am a tax “refugee” from Oz….now i work in london for a US IT company…..the laws here allow me to get a refund on the tax i pay when i work outside the UK….no such law exists in Oz…..i mean if Sydney is going to become an international finance centre the tax laws should reflect that……my colleagues who are doing the same job based in sydney get taxed 100% even though they are out of the country 70% of the time!
i guess i feel sorry you pay full fees then don’t even get the tax free threshold!!….i just don’t understand the logic, seeing as australia would be wanting to do its best to attract OS students and the amounts of tax are miniscule to the government but quite substantial to the individual
anyway nice LJ….how does one go about setting one up and maintaining it?
Morgan
anyhow there’s my two cents worth
Re: typical
Yeah.. I know I”m not a citizen of the country so I’m not sure if it’s my place to give my opinion, but I do personally think the taxes here in Australia are a bit harsh :T
It’s pretty awful to pay many many times more than local students for Uni, pay double for all transportation, and generally get no concession for anything – YET pay tax when all my friends don’t.
It’s great that you get the best out of both worlds though! Must be great working overseas AND for an IT company, it’s my dream/gold when I graduate.
As for getting an LJ – you can either get a code off a LJ member to register for free (I already gave out all my codes though, sorry π ) or you can pay for one, I think it’s about $5 or something? It’s great though, and totally addicting, I recommend it!
“Tell us about it!…”
I am a citizen! And I make a paultry $23,000 a year! For every $470 I make a week they take $80.00 out in tax after the fiscal year I probabaly only take home $18701.28/year which is well shite really! well Cest La Vie that’s the way the dice rolls (In favor of the ATO!) hope your get your tax problems sorted (don’t know what it’s like for international students)

Yeowch, that’s heaps too! I can’t believe the highest tax is almost 50%.. having half of what you earn taken away from you kinda makes you not want to work so hard anymore π

Re: “Tell us about it!…”
Yeowch, that’s heaps too! I can’t believe the highest tax is almost 50%.. having half of what you earn taken away from you kinda makes you not want to work so hard anymore π
