Greece, HOLIDAYS, Santorini GREECE: exploring Oia in Santorini 10 July 2014

LOOK! We’re the king and queen of the world!!!

I particularly love this photo because we look young and carefree.. like back when we were still childless and crazy. And we certainly felt like it – because we were kid-free for the afternoon!!

It was only for a couple of hours, whilst the kids had a nap and chill out back in their rooms with my parents-in-law, but it was a GLORIOUS few hours where we felt completely free to do anything we wanted, on a whim. We felt positively dizzy with the childlessness of the situation 😛

And so it was off to Oia (pronounced ee-ahh) town! Located in the Northern tip of Santorini, I personally thought it was even more gorgeous than Fira. It’s less crowded, the paths are a little smoother, and it’s smaller and more compact. And, ain’t that view grand?

I found myself, coincidentally but gloriously, dressed in exact Santorini colours – their trademark bright blue against white. It was good fun.

A whole bottle of Mythos beer to myself – because an icy cold beer really hits the spot when it’s sunny and hot. We had a wonderful lunch overlooking the water, and soaking in the glorious views of Santorini. And chatting – TO EACH OTHER. This is kind of a key thing, because we always chat with the kids, and hardly with each other. It was incredibly nice to sit at a table together during the day time, and just chill out over a meal. This was one of my favourite memories of Santorinijust Chris and I, together.

My friend recommended Lolita’s Gelato, so I got a Greek Viagra (LOL) flavour, which was a delicious blend of honey-flavoured ice cream and studded with nuts. It was divine – milky and sweet – and so good in the hot afternoon sun.

I also got a chance to poke around in the little shops and boutiques there – YAYY!!!!!!!! It was really nice to be completely kid-free and go shopping, because I didn’t have to worry about ducking out of each shop quickly just to make sure they’re ok, or worse, have them run rampant in the shop whilst I try to look around.

It made me envy the shopkeepers there. Can you imagine having this sort of view during your humdrum working hours??

This photo, above, was taken near the top of Oia. It was beautiful.

I took a photo of this windmill because it’s the famous one that you see in a lot of touristy photos of Oia, and especially in postcards of the place. It probably looks stunning during sunset, but we’d left Oia waaay before that to get back to the kids.

Overlooking the crystal blue ocean. The area is pretty magical. The bright skies and saturated colours make for awesome photography, so I can see why people get married or have honeymoons in Santorini.

There isn’t a huge amount to do in Santorini (apart from checking out Fira and Oia towns, and maybe a swim by the black sand beach if you’re into that), but what’s there is pretty divine. For that reason, though, it doesn’t make sense to holiday there for more than 2-3 days, unless you’re on honeymoon and tend to stay indoors in your nice villa and.. errr.. enjoy each other most of the day!
