FOOD, My recipes, Uncategorized TOFU (?!) CHOCOLATE MOUSSE 3 May 2009

Since tofu is just about rampant in China, I thought I’d try my hand at making some chocolate mousse.

SAY WHAT?!

Yep. You can make healthy chocolate mouse with tofu! I hadn’t actually ever thought about it, but did awhile back and it piqued my curiosity. Considering chocolate mousse is normally primarily based on chocolate and egg whites, I wondered if the texture and flavour would be the same.

It’s a no brainer to make. Dump a packet of silken tofu into a blender, and add in the same weight in chocolate. I added a tablespoon of honey as well. Then just blend it all and refrigerate to set! Takes about 2 minutes πŸ˜‰

Chris (eagerly and curiously) took his glass of tofu chocolate mousse and scooped some into his mouth, slowly tasting the flavour.

“So?? Does it taste like proper chocolate mousse? Or like tofu?”, I asked expectantly.

“…… Errr.. mm. I can taste the tofu. Don’t worry, I.. errr… like it, baby” came his shifty-eyed response.

HA HA! OK, so it’s true. It really DOES taste like tofu, no ifs and buts around that. However, for me, I don’t mind the taste (I guess it’s like drinking a soy milk coffee instead of a regular milk one) and the texture was spot-on to a normal chocolate mousse. Makes a great snack in a pinch!

The only thing is, it’s not really that healthy, right, if you add in a whole packet of chocolate? We even swirled Nutella on top to mask the tofu taste (didn’t work) so you can only eat a wee bit of the tofu chocolate mousse before you’re totally chocolate-d out.

It’s an interesting experiment though, and I quite enjoyed the taste/texture. I would make it again if I had friends over that would be game to try πŸ˜›

All you need is 1 packet of silken tofu, the same weight in chocolate (melted), and some honey

Pop it all in a blender and whir it until completely combined and smooth

Pour into glasses and refrigerate to set

Yummilicious!

it sounds really interesting to me! I would love to try it one day! except abit hard to get a proper chinese or japanese tofu here!! πŸ˜€

Hehehhe glad that you like it. I’ll try it with mango next πŸ˜› B.T likes it with chinese pears πŸ˜›

Actually, this sounds PERFECT for me because I find normal chocolate mousse too sweet. And I LOVE tofu. I actually prefer chocolate soy milk to regular chocolate milk.

I tried it in a Japanese restaurant as part of a degustation. I thought they were being creative or something. Ehmmmmm can’t say I liked tofu chocolate mousse very much.

Agree! I’m not huge on regular chocolate mousse, I do find this nicer cos the soy taste off-sets the pure sweetness of the chocolate
