Daiwo Sushi
#8F06 Superbrand Mall
Pudong
Shanghai, China
??—

Spent Saturday with , wandering around the Pudong area, which is on the other side of the river and considered the business and financial hub of Shanghai. Probably should have wandered around to sight-see, but we made a beeline instead straight for the cheesey-sounding Super Brand Mall. It’s the largest mall in Shanghai, apparently, and is packed sky-high with Western brands. It’s basically 50% clothes shopping and 50% restaurants… a very obvious sign as to what the Chinese past times are πŸ˜‰

It was pretty packed with people shopping, sitting around, and eating. I’m getting used to the sheer crowds of people now, and they way they like to just shove against you – a far far cry from Australia where everyone minds their own personal space and a bump is always followed up with a “Oh, sorry!”. None of that here, but they’re not actually being nasty or being angry with you, it’s just the Chinese way of getting from point A to point B! Oh, and the men also haven’t been taught the manners of gentlemen – they seem unable to open doors for women, instead letting them slam behind them and in front of my face. I’m somewhat used to all these antics, but it still doesn’t stop me from getting really irate sometimes. They need a “Courtesy Begins With Me” campaign, just like Singapore did all those years ago πŸ˜›

Anyway, we shopped around and bought a bunch of clothes, since everything’s on sale. Fantastic sales, so much so that the Western brands are not only affordable, but also very cheap! I bought H&M and Mango stuff for only about $10-20 a pop, thanks to massive 70% discounts. After shopping til we dropped, we settled on some Japanese food at Daiwo Sushi inside the mall. It’s a little messy and not exactly fine dining, but we were hungry and it did the job πŸ˜‰ We ordered up a storm of salmon of every kind! The quality of the food is only mediocre, however. The sashimi was nice and tender and moist, but simply had ZERO TASTE. Usually salmon sashimi has this mild, creamy flavour.. but this one was zip zero zilch on the flavour. Very odd. The other items were edible and average, nothing exceptional.

Only a very mediocre place, nothing outstanding and they really need to step up the quality considering the myriad of other restaurants in the mall that they’re competing with!

Very practical tabulated photo-menu. Loved it!

Salmon sashimi – and it looked so good too *cries*

Plump salmon sushi – this was good πŸ™‚

All our lil dishes

Salmon lovers unite!

Thanks for being a virtual tour guide Beverly! I certainly feel as if I’m literally there in Shanghai and can almost smell and taste the food that you post! :op

Please do share your purchases- I’m curious! I spent 2 months in Hong Kong for a university project and was super hyped about being able to buy clothes for cheap, but when I got there I just couldn’t really find anything to buy. =( Everything was cheap and my size (you know, the one size fits all asians “size”), but the style just wasn’t catching me… I can’t describe it. Not necessarily the colors, nor cut, nor fabric it was so strange. Especially how so much clothes is Made in China to begin with!

Not that it worked. Singaporeans still do what you describe – shove into you and not hold doors open for others. I’ve had men who reach the door ahead of me and wait for me to open it for them. MCPs! You can read more in my entry here.

Wow, I checked out the URL link to this mall and it’s to die for! How far do you live from this mall? Best Buy, Crocs, Sephora, a slew of Asian restaurants, ToysRUs, it’s way cooler than any of the malls in the USA I have been to (in approx 36 states…). I would love to be in that ToysRUs and Best Buy and see what is different from the ones here. I have no doubt there are some subtle differences in price, what’s highlighted to buy, packaging, etc.

It looks like behind you there are magazines to browse while eating? That’s done in very few places here, mostly doctors offices, beauty parlors and a few coffee shops. Most of the actual sushi you had looks much like it does here, although I bet yours was significantly cheaper. That’s a shame the salmon wasn’t excellent but there is always the next place. πŸ™‚

yeah it’s pretty amazing! The malls here are massive and also tons of streetside shopping.. it’s like a paradise haha

Quite a few cafes/restaurants have reading material, i guess so you don’t get board πŸ˜‰

When I read the word ‘Pudong’, it reminded me of how my friends and I used to make fun of the other side of Shanghai – ‘Puxi’! Wahaha!
