Just dropping my 2 cents. The Singapore job sounds the most promising. Although you would be moving back *any* “overseas” work is always a benefit on your resume. Also, since you’re young, its easier for you to move than say, 10 years from now where you might be married and have kids.
While it might be true that the lady at ebay job might be psyching you out with her mind games, do you really want to work for someone that would do that?
Yeah, my goal is to travel overseas to work, I’d love to do it while I’m still young and unmarried!
The lady was a recruiter and wouldn’t be my manager.. so I’m quite interested in meeting the eBay manager and seeing what they’re like – if they’re much nicer or not π
i think one of the main attractions to your journal to me is that it’s like the wonderful, amazing, charmed life adventures for beverly. π I’ve been reading your journal since the gemz days and because i’m so much older, following your journal over the years is akin to watching you grow up.. awww.. beverly’s all graduated and living in the real world! *wipes tears of joy*
Wow yeah it’s been a long time..! I think that was about 5 years ago.. I was so incredibly different then , I must seem like this totally different person now π Unfortunately my life isn’t as interesting as a soap opera, but you know π
Hey Bev,
I think it would be good for you to get an international exposure (despite the fact that it’ll take you back locally) but at the end of the day, you want to become a “Global” player, and thats when your job gets really fun !!
I’d say Singapore is the way to go. ask Chris if he’s interested in spending a couple of years working in Singapore too ! and get him to check out seek.com.au , there’s quite a few IT expats jobs in Singapore I think, and you know what’s best ? they pay for his relocation too π
Good luck Bev.. so happy to hear your many succeses !!
PS : can’t you take cinnamon to Sing ?
Yeah, I’d love to be able to work in different countries, that’s a dream of mine, to be able to travel for work.
Chris wants to come back to SG with me but it’s really a matter of him finding a job. Didn’t realise seek.com.au had SG jobs though, I’m def going to check it out! Thanks heaps :))))
PS. Don’t think Cinnamon will survive the plane trip, she’s too old π
OoooooHHHHH!!!!!!!! π
Hehehe…Sorry,its just me being silly:)
Seriouly though this is soooo cool and I’m really happy for you.Its great when people appreciate good work regardless of your race, nationality and gender:) So kudos to you.
The E bay lady is kind of weird isn’t she. I mean on one hand she’s bashing you then she turns around and says you’re an excellent candidate,UNLESS…..she was gauging your reactions to the bashing to see if you could stomach it. I mean,”Senior” on linemanager is more of a supervisor kind of job which means you’ll most probably be having ppl working “for”/”under” you,and my guess is she must have been acesing your take on being “bullied”. I mean face it Bev, you’ll be the 21 yr old that could be telling a 45 yr old what /how to do his/her job…LOL
Then again,if that wasn’t her motive, she’s in need of some serious help:P
Otherwise, take your time and think about your options well and its good that you can think of the future and the present as well:)
Like they say, every job, even a dream job has its pros and cons.Maybe you could jot it down on paper. At least it’ll look clearer to you instead of just thinking about it?
All the best and what ever you decide,I’m sure all of us here a very pleased for you:)
Hehe “kind of weird” is a good way to put it! Some people thought that she was just testing to see how I react in stressful situations or something.. I just wish I was more prepared though. Was in a bit of shock :X
Don’t worry Bev. The way you described,I don’t think anyone could have been prepared for THAT…LOL

wow
I envy you so much!! Thats AMAZING job opportunities. I say take the one that interests you the most but since they all do.. then pick the one that will make you happiest. ie. being away from your boyfriend isn’t good. π but anyway, thats just my point.. hehe CONGRATULATIONS THOUGH!! you totally deserve it π
Re: wow
It’s hard to pic.. I like the SG one best but being away from Chris and Cinnamon is going to kill me π Well I’ll see how it goes.. nothing’s really confirmed yet anyway!
OoooooHHHHH!!!!!!!! π

Hi Bev, first of all, CONGRATULATION!!! 3 job offers *is* a lot, you know! π
And, I will definitely pick the SG one if I were you. Anyway, all the best and I hope you can make the right decision soon!
Thanks π I’m keen on the SG one too.. since I’ll be going to SG anyway to visit my parents. But I *love* Ebay too, lol.
I am so pleased for you!
The second or third job offers sound best to me as even though the first one has lots of money if all the people there are like the interview woman you will be miserable working with a bunch of nutters.
Good luck making the decision, I am sure it will be hard but worthwile.
“working with a bunch of nutters” *LOL*!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I’ll try to stay away from companies that have crazy people though π
wow! heaps of excellent job choices are so exciting π
I also like the second one the most, but long distance relationships are horrible and pretty difficult to maintain properly. My bf is moving to melb after he graduates at the end of this year (while I still have 3 more years left of uni! GRRR!), and it’ll be hard coz we’ve been together for more than 3 years…
But you’ll have to make these types of sacrifices sooner or later, since jobs and lifestyles are so volatile these days, there’s always a lot of chance of getting transferred and moved and stuff.
And you have a mouse? π
Yeah, I’m not a fan of long distance relationships.. is your bf def moving back? Can’t he find a job near you? It does suck when situations like that happen and you can’t really do anything about it π 3 years is ages though so if you stay together you’ll know it’s for good π
Posted a pic of my mouse Cinnamon above!
Hi Bev, first of all, CONGRATULATION!!! 3 job offers *is* a lot, you know! π

Wow bev, Im so envious. =)
First, CONGRATS! Frankly, I think the Ebay one might not be so good. Think of working under someone like her, man.
Number 3 doesn’t seem that good to me, because Dennis is always complaining that as a vendor, its not that good blah blah blah (although I cannot remember the reasons, but Im sure you’ll know).
Number 2 seems the best because u get to go back and work in SG and it will be great on yr CV and the money is good too. But I guess discussing it with Chris is the most impt thing to you right now. Pray too, God will guide you in the right direction. All the best Bev!
The eBay is just HR though.. I’m wondering if the manager is nicer..
I do want the SG position, but wish it was a full-time role, not just a contract! I’ll see how serious she is about recruiting me over to SG.. if she really is then I’ll definitely consider it π
All the best still! I do think that they want you to convert you to full time. Perhaps they want to assess your capabilities that’s why they said its a contract…
Oooo.. I hope so. I want an FTE, doing a contract just doesn’t seem as secure.. :X
it definitely isn’t! =( but most jobs nowadays are contract-based and that sux..
Whoa, that’s awesome Bev!!! You’ve definitely got it going on with all those offers. I understand how much of a problem decision-making can be. I can’t tell you what to decide because I wouldn’t want to impose, but I just wanted to congratulate you for getting these opportunities. Just awesome. Good luck deciding. π
I’m bad at decision making though π But thanks.. I think they’re good opportunities for me, it’s just hard trying to decide – I mean, when it’s your entire career at stake, it makes you a lot more nervous :X
Its great to be head-hunted!
Proves that you are no run-of-the-mill grad!
You are ACE! =D
*lol* your post made me smile π The eBay wasn’t headhunting though, I just decided to fwd her my resume and then she called me half hr later for an interview. I usually don’t send out resumes ‘cos I figure people just chuck them away π
First off, CONGRATS! More offers are better than nothing~!
The Ebay person sounds so wierd. Personally, I wouldn’t really want to work with such, but to each his own. The Singapore offer does sound attractive, so maybe you could discuss the options wuth Chris and see how things go?
I wish you the best of luck~! π
Yeah.. I think she was having a bad day or she’s just tough on the people she interviews :X
I want the SG offer but I really need to think about what to do with my apt/car/etc…
hmm, regarding working in singapore (which seems like your best bet considering all three situations). would it be a one year contract or longer? see, how you decide to “up and leave” depends on the time period. if it’s not long term, you could probably leave your things with chris for time being. although i’m just thinking in terms of practicality. long distance relationships are so difficult. =(
It starts at 3 months, so what I’ll do is just bring back a suitcase and leave my apt as-is, and then come back or if I stay on, then fully move back to SG..
The problem is that my car will be sitting there for 3months, if I sell it then I’m stuffed if I DO end up coming back to Australia! And my apartment is leased ’till Jan ;(
in the meantime, can chris use your car? and/or live in your apartment? (i actually assumed you both lived together since the place seemed quite big!)
yeah don’t rush your decision and sell/give all your stuff away. you might need it sooner than you thought.
Actually Chris might rent out my apt instead and then run my car every week or so.. so that should be OK. I won’t get rid of any of my stuff yet, I figure I could come back at some later stage when things are more certain and ship everything back home!
wow! i’m really happy for you! i’m not very much in the know of the on-goings in your line of work / IT line so i can’t really advise you on the choice. basically i think choose what would best help you gain experience and in your advancement, but most of all what would make you happy. it’s a tough choice since there’s your boyfriend, etc to consider but i believe you’ll make a good choice! π
Thanks *hugs* π
I really really really want the SG one, but I’d prefer if it was a permanent job, it’s so hard to just be ‘inbetween’ countries!
I would reject the eBay offer, because I think it would be more valuable to your career in the long term to clock up more experience within Microsoft. I’ve been told it’s by far the best IT company to be employed by, and the possibilities for internal promotion are endless and pretty amazing.
The Singapore position sounds like it would make you really happy, and it’s a spectacular CV boost. Would Chris move with you?
I hate long-term relationships though, they utterly suck. My boyfriend is preparing to apply for Tyson’s Sydney position at the moment, since Tys is getting sent to Singapore. :S
I DO want to stay within MS, because I’ve seen that once you’re in, YOU’RE IN, y’know? But the SG role is not permanent, but it gives me the *chance* to go permanent.. but it’s really hard to just leave everything behind and very very $$$ for me. But it really is a dream role because it’s doing what I love π
Chris can’t move as his contract is till end of Dec.. and if he comes to SG he’ll need a company to pull him over, since he doesn’t have a Visa. He realyl wants to go to SG but it’s really hard to π
Heh, someone in my team was asking me to apply for that position too! There’s Tyson’s position and also Caroline’s, someone else in his team.. since both are going to SG.
Tyson and Caroline are both going to SG? Interesting.
How long is the SG postion for? You could feasibly leave your apartment as-is (like, sublet it out or whatever, or maybe Chris or another friend could move in?) until something more permanent eventuates in SG.
Long-distance relationships do suck badly, but I’ve always thought it was better to make sacrifices now in order to build a better future. As long as you have a mutual understanding where you’re going as a couple, and that the decision you make will be working towards that future.
Mike is interested on Tyson’s position, but it will be such a massive lifestyle change for both of us. We’re all over the place at the moment because I’m still studying and not entirely sure where I’ll end up working, and he’s not sure whether he wants to pursue the MS position or throw himself into consulting instead. :/
Caroline’s already in SG.. but yeah, both of them have IT/marketing roles, which I’m keen to continue doing. I like being right in the middle of IT and marketing π
Long term relationships are HORRID, but Chris and I agreed ages ago that we wouldn’t let our relationship stand in the way of our career. I mean, a career is a long-term thing, and if we were meant to be together, it’ll work out, right? still though, easier said than done…
WOW! Youve got so many job offers. So lucky!
All the best to you. Hope you choose the right one for you π
It’s only 3.. but wish I could find something that was ALL positive and nothing negative π
Frankly, with the economy all out of whack, three is A LOT! π I had two different offers at the beginning of this year and that was a total shock. It’s hard enough to find ONE. π
Which economy do you mean? I know Australia is doing so-so at the moment with regards to the IT industry, but hopefully will pick up soon. You’re right though, it’s a bit shocking π I was worried I would be jobless for ages!
eh, I wasn’t thinking. The US economy sucks right now. :p
Frankly, the interview went *terribly*. She didn’t seem very friendly at all and whenever I said I enjoyed/liked something, she turned around and said it was “silly” and had “no career prospects” whatsoever.
Ewww. I hate when the interviewers act like they’re so much better than you. Piece of advice Bev: whenever you go into an interview, no matter how much the salary is or how high the position is, make sure you concentrate on the fact that you and the interviewer are EQUALS. They are no better than you just because they have the position you want while you’re just doggie doo on their shoes. This helps me keep the playin field level and doesn’t let them catch me off guard. Hasn’t failed me yet. Last two interviews I tried this at I was hired but I turned offer down (for other reason such as pay and what not).
Was so shaken and upset that at the end, I was barely listening when she said “I think you’re a fantastic candidate and you would fit in perfectly in a company like eBay. I’d love to keep you as a shortlisted candidate.”
Strange for her to say that when she basically just stomped on you. She was probably testing your nerves to see if you’re somebody she can run over (that’s probably what she’s looking for). Call her back and tell her you’re still interested, jsut to see what her response is. But all in all, she probably said that when she really meant “We won’t hire you but we’ll hold your resume until it collects dust.”
BTW, how come you’re lookin for another job? What’s wrong with Microsoft?
Yeah, I spoke to my dad and he said some recruiters do that to you to see how you cope under negativity or pressure, whereas some do it cos they have some sort of complex. Oh well. Even if I go ahead with it I don’t think I’ll get the job.. I’m just a bit too underqualified! my term at MS ends in September so another job is on the cards, or to find another position within MS.
Oh I though the MS job was a permanent type job. I had no idea it was only a temp position. Eeeks.
Anyway, good luck. I’m looking for another job myself as my current position doing foster care is emotionally taxing (I’ve gotten attached to some of the kids) and dangerous as some of the parents get violent when you tell them that their weekly visit has been cancelled. Plus it’s only part time and they refuse to give me full time work.
Wish it was permanent, that’s why I wish the SG offer is permanent too π
Your job is so similar to my cousin’s. She works in a girl’s home, which is kinda different from yours since it’s for troubled girls, but is emotionally taxing like yours is, and quite dangerous too as some of the girls are violent.
THEY ALL SOUND GOOD TO ME!!
but its going to be hard for you to choose..
i mean i would love to work in singapore!
the food *dribbles* and shopping over there!
i hope u wont have difficulties making your decision!
did u tell ur parents yet??
but they probably want u to work in s’pore aswell..?
anyway, good luck with everything π
I’m kind of leaning towards the Singapore Microsoft job too π But it’s not confirmed or anything so I don’t want to get my hopes up yet! I’d LOVE to be there since my parents live there π They’re on hols so haven’t told them yet, can’t wait to though!
I am so pleased for you!
The second or third job offers sound best to me as even though the first one has lots of money if all the people there are like the interview woman you will be miserable working with a bunch of nutters.

Oh well.
