I wouldn’t worry too much about the possibility of paralysis – it’s really very rare. I had all four of my wisdom teeth out this time last year and it wasn’t that bad, even though they were all buried deep in my gums. You’ll be fine, I am sure πŸ™‚

(Oh, just in case you’re wondering, hi, I’m Annette, I found your journal through MUA which I also frequent.)

OUCH!

yikes. sorry to hear about that bev…i’ll be keeping my fingers crossed for ya. look at it this way…once this is over and done with, you’ll *never* have to go through with it ever again. it’s a one-time deal. i know it doesn’t make it any easier (or less painful), but it’ll be over soon. i promise! πŸ™‚

i had my four wisdom teeth taken out this summer and i was fine after the sedatives wore off. although, mine were easier to remove then yours..

Hey Hey

I had my wisdom teeth removed about a year ago and I suffered BIG TIME. Yikes….Thankfully, none of them had grown in yet, but the nerves of the top two were growing UP into my sinus cavity, resulting in numerous sinus infections. Ugh. When I had them taken out, I had a terrible reaction to the gas that I was breathing in. Shoot, it was supposed to relax me and I ended up shaking uncontrollably. So, the only thing that was deadening my nerves was novacaine. Let’s see…what else…Oh, and I was supposed to recover that weekend but didn’t end up doing so until almost the very next week because I got what they call “dry socket”. Meaning, the blood didn’t clot like it was supposed to and I ended up with an open wound…Very painful because I had to gargle with this nasty medicine and clean food particles out of the open areas. Not only that, but my jaw was bruised. It looked like I was beat. πŸ˜€ Heh…Naw….Not really…But I did look like quite the chipmunk. πŸ˜€

But dry socket is pretty rare, so make sure to not go against the doctor’s wishes. No straws, no crunchy foods, and no rinsing the blood the first day you have it done. πŸ˜€

Ok, now that I’ve grossed everyone out..I think I’ll retreat…

Re: Hey Hey

Jeepers!!! Thanks for scaring the life outta me πŸ˜‰ I hope mine goes smoothly.. I can’t believe you went through all that pain though – I think I might’ve fainted ‘cos I’m such a baby.

Bev darling, I feel your pain. See I was cursed with not only the 4 normal wisdom teeth but 3 tiny extra ones making 7 wisdon teeth. I got the top four taken out about 2 years ago. It didn’t hurt too much, only when he stuck the needle in the roof of my mouth. After though it hurt like hell because I couldn’t get my painkillers until the next day and I was mad because I was so swollen I looked like a chipmunk. Anyway, I still got the 3 other ones because like you, my lower ones are sitting on the nerves but I told him not to take them out because they weren’t bothering me as much as the tops ones were.

Don’t worry.

This happened to me, I had to have all four of my wisdom teeth removed, and the one on my upper left side was growing back into my jaw. The surgeon had to cut off my gums, take a drill and crack the tooth out. They also sewed my cheeks onto the big hole they created from extracting the tooth It sounds horrible, but the entire operation only took 10 minutes. And since you are *under*, you do not feel anything at all. Only after you feel a slight pulsating dull pain , but then they provide pain killers (typically a tylenol + codeine and an antibiotic to prevent infection). It will probably be hard to swallow for the next 2 days because of the bruising, but this stuff heals quickly. It took about 4-5 days for me to heal, and that is having all my wisdom teeth out. So do not worry, All will be okay!!! My brother had the same operation, and he was eating by the second day.

Re: Don’t worry.

ACK! Geez.. that sounds painful. I think mine’s simliar – cutting it open, extracting, and then sewing up. But he said it’ll take around 1 hour, because it’s such a delicate operation πŸ™ And I can only eat liquid food for the next 4 days.. argh. but that’s OK, just as long as everything goes alright and I’m not left with a paralysed left jaw.
