So I had Roast Suckling Pig for the first time the other day. You know how they say Chinese people eat really weird stuff? SO TRUE. We really do!! The actual roast pork is not weird, but SEEING THE PIGLET is tres tres tres weird as hell. It’s small, like a puppy, and roasted over a fire so the meat is soft and fatty and the skin is really crisp like a potato chip.
A family friend ordered one of these Suckling Pigs and invited us over for dinner. Costing a whopping $88, it’s certainly an expensive little piglet! And that’s only because this was a small one, they can go for around $350+. Yikes! Anyway, I hovered around with a mixture of fascination, delight and fear as the pig was chopped up and served on a platter. I initially wasn’t too keen on it as I don’t like eating animal fat and skin.. I always pick it off my chicken and all my meat. In this case, it’s specifically the fat and skin that makes the pig so valuable and good-to-eat, so I popped a piece into my mouth to try it out.
Well.. I gotta say I still prefer my meat sans fat and skin π I just can’t stomach the taste of it, no matter what the animal! So I picked off just the meat to eat, much to the horror of everyone at the table π The meat was yum though!
Would I eat it again? Ummm.. not sure. Maybe. But only if it was just the meat.. but that defeats the whole purpose of the dish, haha!

I pick off the meat too, I can’t stand even a tiny sliver of fat or skin on my meat. Of course, everyone else around me is horrified that I do that, so I end up having to avoid the pork altogether. I don’t know what’s worse… the baby suckling pig, or the huge 60lb roasted pig that I’ve seen at traditional weddings.
I think I prefer the baby pig, I figure it must have more tender meat? But yeah, the fat is just squishy and tastes weird!

Oh man. We have a whole roasted pig every New Year’s (Cuban tradition. We sure do love our pork! LOL) so seeing a whole pig isn’t weird for me. I don’t like the fat but I love the crispy skin.
But $88 for a baby? We can get a bigger one for like $50 here! Yikes!
I didn’t know Cubans ate roast pig too! So cool π
I think the prices are marked up here cos they’re mostly used for weddings?

the first time i encountered this suckling piglet was during my cousin’s wedding dinner a couple of years ago. was sooooo disgusted that i didnt eat a slice of the pork that night.
I’d always thought I was pretty chicken when it came to food, but apparently now since I’ve eaten this after seeing it whole.. and also that frog-eating experience π
$88 – I wonder if the pig doesn’t cost that much and they round it to that number to make it lucky.
Yeah it’d be cheaper I think, since it’s pretty small too! But it’s more of a special treat so people would pay the $ for it

In the first photo it’s attached, second photo it’s detached, third photo… MISSING! I guess what I want to know is, did someone eat it? π
The head can be eaten! Like the ears chewed on and the skin on the head eaten like crisps. Soooooooo weird!
heck, i am chinese and i still look w/awe and a sense of horror whenever i pass by a restaurant w/ducks and chickens hanging in the front glass window or whenever i see a full roasted pig. but yeah this stuff does taste pretty good but i have to picture something PRETTY when i eat it (which isn’t very often anyway). LOL
It’s a pretty gory sight! I prefer my food just not looking like animals π
Me too it makes me think of the torture the poor animal must have endured. I’ve never had roasted pig but considering it’s pork I would have thought the meat would be flavored even without the fat and skin. A lot of times I use pork products to flavor some of my side dishes (i.e. cabbage, various sorts of beans).

Heh yeah, I don’t think I would get it in AU.. plus I think it’d be $$ too!

I know! When I saw it whole I was like “errrrmmmm not sure if I’ll eat that” , but cut up, it at least looks like a normal meat dish π
