Mum ‘discovered’ this little tucked-away place from a couple of rave reviews she read. We were trying to figure out what the name Ayam Bakar Ojolali meant, so when I got home I checked their website, and apparently, “The Malay word ‘Ayam Bakar’ means ‘Grilled Chicken’ in English while ‘Ojolali’ is Javanese words and means ‘Don’t Forget’. In combination ‘Ayam Bakar Ojolali’ means ‘Unforgettable Grilled Chicken’ in English.” You learn something new every day!

The staff are incredibly nice and friendly, and even informed me of the “complimentary soup” which I promptly helped myself too – heh! They don’t have many dishes on the menu, perhaps only about 10. We quickly made our selections and shortly, the food arrived. Impressively, the food was really authentic and so so so tasty. That probably meant it had a high sodium/MSG content, but who cares? IT TASTED GREAT! :)~

The Bakmi Ayam (aka “Noodles Chicken”) was super. It looked fairly unexciting, but was bursting with flavour, especially those little chicken morsels. It came with a generous portion of deep fried onions to give that crunch factor. Couldn’t resist their namesake, the Ayam Bakar Ojolali. The chicken, sadly, was really small.. but I remembered that in Singapore, then chicken we get is always teeny and scrawny.. in Australia it’s always fat and plump and juicy, which I prefer. However, they’d cooked their chicken in a lovely sweet-ish sauce, which was great. It also came with some Tempeh (fried soy bean things) and 2 types of chilli sauce. Yum!

Also had the Rawon (aka “Indonesian Beef Stew”). A Javanese dish, this was soooooo luscious. The soup was dark and tasty and came with chunks of tender beef and lots of random tasty bits in the soup. Served with rice, crackers, egg and chilli. Mmm mmmm!!! They’re somewhat more expensive than regular hawker food in Singapore, but 100% worth it IMHO because you won’t find food like this in hawker centres.

After that, we adjourned for dessert at Gelare at Plaza Singapura. Because it was Tuesdays and Tuesdays are half priced waffles, hurray!! Yummy Yummy.. Gelare do the BEST waffles in Singapore.. for sure. Their Belgian waffles and crisp on the outside and soft on the inside, all hot and buttery and sweet. A trip to Singapore must include a visit to Gelare.

Unfortunately, this time, they’d removed the water jugs & cups and when asked “Can I have some iced water please?”, I got the response “No. We only have mineral water”. Not a big deal to most people, but it drove me insane! I CANNOT STAND places that refuse to serve plain water, and force you to order mineral water. It’s stupid and clearly shows that they’re desperate for another buck or two. I reasoned that they’d taken the water away since it was “half price tuesday” but still, they are IDIOTS. Irate, I took their Customer Feedback Form and wrote a scathing comment about it. Harumph.
