The Belgian Beer Cafe is just a stone’s throw from work and I’m always keen to go there – the place, frankly, just looks cool and I love it when they seat us at the ‘special’ table for two on the upper-level, overlooking the bar bustling with drinkers. Chris and I popped in there for a quick mussels fix for dinner. Entree was a Double Smoked Trout Salad with Angel Hair Pasta and Capers. I was quite disappointed with the size when it arrived, it just looked so small, considering the price. One bite and I was definitely wishing there was more, as it was delicious. Delicate, soft tasty chunks of fish and the pasta was cooked perfectly and tossed in olive oil and herbs. Really tasty, but I bet I can recreate it at home for a LOT cheaper, so I’m going to try that soon 🙂

Opted for Fresh Mussels cooked with vegetables, blue cheese and lemon juice for the main.. as I’ve discovered recently I LOVE smelly cheese. The mussels were divine – juicy little morsels bursting with flavour and swimming in a tasty broth chockers with vegetables and stringy blue cheese. It was slightly on the salty side due to all the cheese, but so flavourful and deeeelish!! Went perfectly with the bowl of Fries served with Mayonnaise – which I consider the best in Sydney. The fries are fat and I always go for the half-soggy soft ones, just the way I like my fries 😉 Dipped in the smooth chilled mayo? Heavenly.

All washed down with a Kriek beer (Lambic beer with fresh cherries added. Kriek is the flemish word for cherry. Pouring into the balloon shaped glass allows full expression of aroma and flavours. Ideal with an aperitif. Alc.Vol. 5.3%). I normally don’t like cherry flavours but this was mild and slightly sweet, but still pretty normal tasting. Loved it!
