Like you, I feel *very uncomfortable* about the Academy Awards in times like this. (though it was cool to see Michael Moore and the other documentary filmmakers speak up on their thing) To me it conveys a message of “we’re America, and nothing can stop us from indulging high capitalism and excessive spending because we’re so damn invincible.” Which is true, but I don’t like it when I think of how much other industries, entertainment, fun, and just plain old safety and survival has to come to a standstill when America decides to flex its muscles.
ps. Bev, do you receive email from your angelic.com account? I’d like to send you a private email about you and Chris…
Heya!
It was nice to see the stars respect what’s going on in the world though.. and some of the speeches were pretty good. but I thought the goodybags were a bit nuts, I can’t believe the amount of money pumped into them! I reckon giving just half the stuff and donating the profits of sales with the other half of the stuff would make hundreds of thousands for people that need it most..
PS. yeah my email angelic.com works π

WOW WOW and WOW! *lol* But then again, Bev, we all think the goody bags cost too much money because we’re “ordinary” ppl who don’t earn so much money like all the actors/actresses do. If we earn US$20 million/movie like some of them do, we probably wouldn’t be as excited cause then we’d be able to get all those stuff (and more) whenever we want to, don’t you think? :)))
Wow
See, stars get used to all the “freebies”. So use to it, they go to Bergdoff and continue to help themselves (ahem, winona).
Re: Wow
*lol* oooo that was mean! π But yeah, it’s awesome to be a celebrity.. you get tons of freebies, and not just crappy ones but thousands of dollars worth of items. I certainly woudln’t mind that kinda life!

I think it’s a good thing that The Oscars took place. I mean, all the people in the movie industry are workers like everybody else and it’s important for them to get the little gilded guy. π It means that they are recognized for their work which is not always easy (even if it may look like it). I was really touched by Chris Cooper’s speech.
… that is just INSANE. $15,000? FOR ONE? ack.

I think that Nicole Kidman put it best when she said that art is important. Art is especially important during times like this — and I think it is good that they still held the Oscars this year.
Americans want nothing to change their way of life or high standard of living as one of the major superpowers. This is one of the reasons why Bush claims he is sending out troops – “to protect this way of life as we know it”. The Academy Awards are a major part of American culture. It is a ritzy, glamorous annual event where loads of money is spent — but this is not necessarily a bad thing. It’s easy to go off about how that money could have been put to better use. But if a celebrity wanted to, they could fully auction off those items on e-bay and get heaps more money for it.. and then they could donate that to a good cause. Also, the fashion industry is a part of the economy which has obviously been lagging behind in the past couple of weeks.
By refraining from spending money, by holding back on the usual things that one might do as an individual, the economy is going to suffer (making the already mess of a home-front messier — stocks lower, more jobs lost, etc etc).
Obviously I am talking about more than the Oscars. I think that it’s vital to carry on with our daily lives. The economy needs to keep moving, or else it will get worse. I do not mean this in a disrespectful manner at all. Trust me when I say I have the highest respect for people who are willing to fight and lose their lives to protect their nation. But when they come back, they are going to want to see that their way of life has been preserved. So many of them were actually watching the Oscars live last night. .. throughout history, various singers and performers have gone to visit troops for a song&dance (think Marilyn, Midler.. and even Mariah Carey) while they are either fighting or preparing to fight.
This is because in desperate times, men and women need music and art. Art is important. And I am babbling so I will stop now!!! π
i agree, art (and music) is important. i think it helps keep people sane during the hard times.
OK OK.. persuader π I think you’re right where you said that why should the whole economy etc suffer and we should go on as if life is still the same. But I still think that the whole goody bag thing’s a little extravagant, maybe half the items in there would still be a gorgeous gift, but it’s thousands and thousands worth of stuff! Half of me is just jealous cos I”d *love* that stuff too, but the other half of me is also incredulous that so much money is spent just on “goody bag” stuff, y’know?
No way…I knew the Oscars gifts were extravagant but not THAT extravagant! Unbelievable. Where did you find that list Bev?

PS. I really hope it works out for you and Chris, I recently split from my boyfriend of 2 1/4 years – it was for completely different reasons to you and I know it was the right thing to do, but we still love each other sooo much and it feels like I’ve cut off my right hand. Don’t split up unless there really is no alternative.
I found it when I was surfing around looking for photos of the celebs that went to the Oscars. Lucky people!
I’m sorry to hear that you and your boyfriend split up.. it’s so hard especially when you’ve been together for so long and especially if you still love each other π
You mean they gave those things out to the stars?? Waah..I want them too!
No kidding! The perks of being famous :T
