Normally we go to the Boxing Cat Brewery in the evenings for dinner and drinks.. but this time, we decided to try their Brunch out since it all looked so appetizing on their menu. We were surprised it was actually quite a popular spot for brunch, with a full house when we were there. What I love about the Boxing Cat is their stellar service – it’s always good! Very accommodating, friendly, and no strange behaviour. Best of all, if you have any ‘off the menu’ requests, it’s handled well instead of a blank stare. Yay π
Best of all? They serve American Southern food. One of my favourite cuisines (can it be considered that?), EVER!!!!! Fried chicken, biscuits, corn bread, etc etc. It’s all sooooooo good! I live for the stuff. I should caveat here I’m not from the Southern states of American (obviously!) so perhaps the food is spot-on authentic, perhaps it is not. I don’t particularly care either way though, because I like it π I’m sure that deep down, I’m a Southern – the food really is that fab π
We did have a bit of a carb overload though, as we ordered 2 really stodgy, heavy dishes without realising. The Southern rosemary biscuits and sausage gravy with 2 poached eggs, potatoes, tomato were luscious and good comfort food. Soft, dense warmed biscuits with a creamy rich gravy and bits of sausage, topped with a jaunty poached egg – divine. There are only 2 biscuits, but it actually is totally sufficient because they’re pretty heavy, plus there’s a generous heap of potatoes to fill you right up.
We really enjoyed their Fluffy buttermilk pancakes with maple syrup, butter, and whipped cream too. Lovely and fluffy, they had a lovely texture and I really liked how they didn’t scrimp on the butter and syrup. You get 3 decently-sized buttermilk pancakes that’s enough for a main-sized meal.
I was really impressed with their Strawberry milkshake. Arriving in a tall glass, it was basically half-melted strawberry ice cream. I love thick milkshakes that are made with ice cream (as opposed to just milk with strawberry syrup stirred in there). It was perfection π
Whet your appetite with their menu here.
Painting in the Boxing Cat Brewery – how apt, LOL!
Southern rosemary biscuits and sausage gravy with 2 poached eggs, potatoes, tomato (75?)
Fluffy buttermilk pancakes with maple syrup, butter, and whipped cream (38?)
Latte and (my absolutely stunning) strawberry milkshake
Good photos. No mention of the beer?
Hi Sweet Bev. Lovely photos. Especially of th milkshake! I want to break my diet now. My husband complained, though, that you made no mention of the beer from a Brewery. He wants to know which microbrewery has the best beer in Shanghai: Boxing Cat, Paulaner, Shanghai Brewery or Bund Brewery. Any tips? Sylvia xoxo
Re: Good photos. No mention of the beer?
Hehe good point! We were there for brunch, hence didn’t drink beer. But we’ve been there for dinner and drinks before and their beer sampler is delish. I prefer Boxing cat to Paulaner.. haven’t tried the Shanghai or Bund brewery though!

Born and Rised in the South here! (North Carolina), I’m also an anthroplogy student and thinking of doing my thesis is the evolution of Southern Cuisine. We definatly have a food style all of our own π
You lucky duck, you get awesome food all the time! That thesis sounds super cool.. what a great idea π
You know what’s yummy as well? Fried chicken with waffles! I am also not from the south, so I have no idea whether that’s authentic or not, but there are some restaurants in my neighborhood where you can get fried chicken with a side of waffles, and the chicken is SO good if you “accidentally” drizzle some syrup on them. π
yeeeees that’s on their menu too, I was eyeing that as well. Gonna get it next time, thanks for the rec π
All the food looks amazingly rich. I wonder if the name of the restaurant or the painting came first?
Oh LOL a very good question….!
im a southern gal too! π
love all that hearty buttery american food!
I knowwww.. Southerners really know the good stuff, heh. Freshly-baked cornbread = WIN
