RATING:

There is this hidden Thai treasure in Shanghai.

Its name is Thai House and it’s flat-out impossible to stumble upon it yourself. You either have to have a friend recommend it to you and bring you there, or read an online review (like this one!) and find your way there.

I won’t mince my words: the place is situated in a horror-movie type location, and if you’re there by yourself at night, you’d be freakin’ SCARED.

Fortunately, we were a group of 5, and some of the girls had been there before and so confidently knew where to go. Chris and I were horrified at the surroundings, and our friends had to urge us “Trust me!! This is it..” as we tentatively ventured forward, ready to be mugged and left for dead at any moment. Dramatic sounding? Yes. But go there at night and you’ll see what I mean!

Go down a dark alley and through those black metal gates at the end.
Try not to think scary thoughts that you’re about to be mugged.

Turn right after the metal gates and at the end of the alley is a tiny door

Go in and up to the 2nd floor and FINALLY you see Thai House!

Once in there, Thai House is a beautiful, comfy, homely little restaurant. The staff are friendly, though a little inattentive since we were sitting in one of the little separate rooms and they rarely poked their head in to check on us and see if we needed anything. Still, all the dishes came out swiftly and they were absolutely delicious. I was so impressed with the authenticity of the sauces and cuisine, and just how flat-out tasty the food was.

A special call-out to the Tom Yum soup which came in a large steam-boat style container. We asked for “less spice” and it was 100% perfection. We declared it the best Tom Yum we’ve ever had. It had the perfect combination of spice and sourness, and came chock full of ingredients. Normally, I don’t even drink Tom Yum soup because I don’t like it, but I loved this one so much I had 3 full bowls.

The other excellent dish was the Pandan leaf chicken. Fat juicy chunks of marinated chicken wrapped in pandan leaves and BBQ’d… it was tender and tasty, lovely eaten alone or with a scoop of plain white rice. And my 3rd favourite dish was the Pad Thai, so common at Thai places but often not executed as perfectly as this one. The noodles were cooked to just-so firmness, with a sweet and tangy sauce and studded with ingredients. A squeeze of fresh lime and you’ve got yourself one helluva satisfying dish.

A fabulous meal, and it worked out to 90? per person inclusive of drinks and desserts. We ate a lot though, you could easily have a decent meal that for half the price. We’ll definitely be back, preferably bringing our parents or friends that haven’t been there before, so we can scare ’em first with those dark alleys πŸ˜›

Finally seated in the cozy restaurant

An ice cold beer and lemongrass drink

Thai spring rolls – surprisingly very fresh and yummy!

Papaya salad – ask for this “less spicy” as it normally is spicy enough to kill

The outstanding, amazing Tom Yum soup

Excellent Pandan leaf chicken

Very creamy vegetable green curry

Mussamun beef curry – the only one that wasn’t good, with gristly, tough beef

One fabulous Pad Thai

Coconut puddings – a delicious dessert!

Mango (it was a bit too sour) and sticky rice with coconut cream

Update for location

Hi Bev, we went there with my wife on friday evening 23 July after reading your post.
Fantastic food, we got stuffed so much that we had to walk back to Paulaner to finally start to breath again normally.
The Wuding Lu small branch closed so we went to the Jia Shan Lu branch, we ordered everything you suggested but just for 2..Arrrgh almost food coma Unfortunately the thai spring rolls were unavailable, so we ordered the seafood thai pizza instead).
The manager invited us for the opening of the new (large ) branch on August 8 at 618, Yan An Xi Lu (by Jiang Su Lu) (Alas, will be in Taipei that time).
Btw, off topic , went to Mi Tierra yesterday night, awesome Mexican food too
Have happy trip Mr T

Re: Update for location

Oh I could have told you about that place – I went there a couple of times when I was in Shanghai! I loved how extensive the menu was! Thai places here never have so many options…

It’s very popular amongst the expat community, everyone seems to know about it. But it took us 1.5 years to get ourselves there!

No Thai meal I ever have is without Thai green chicken curry. But then I usually stick to the classics : prawn cakes, tom yum gong, pad thai etc. And yes, for us, the Luwan crew, the second branch is more convenient.

WoAi, thanks for the website. Jianguo Lu works great for me. It means I can order Thai for lunch. I def wanna go check that place.

I like Coconut Paradise, but I wish their portions were a bit bigger or the prices a bit cheaper. Bev, are you going there this Sat for Erin’s farewell dinner? My fav Thai curry so far is a green chicken curry in Simply Thai. It has that delicious taste of coconut. Yam!

You should like Thai House then Elena. The girls were saying it’s same/better than Coconut Paradise but cheaper! I adore Simply Thai too but they’re quite $$

Well if this were London I’d be worried but Shanghai is probably the safest city I’ve lived in. I think Thai House focuses more on take out so the location and surroundings isn’t too important. Some of my friends would order at least once a week without fail. They have a branch near Jianguo Lu also (nearer for me I think).

There just seem to be so many Thai places in Shanghai now though. Have you tried Coconut Paradise or Thai Gallery?

True, there’s not much physical violence in Shanghai which is just fab.

Their new branch looks a lot nicer, but not sure if it’s the same quality food!

I’ve tried Coconut paradise but can’t remember it at all, lol. So far, I like this place best

You are brave! One look at that alley and I would have jetted the other way, gotten straight in the car, locked the doors, and driven away as quick as I could! Looks like it all turned out to be worth the fright though πŸ™‚

Heh true! But we were with a whole group of friends who knew where we were going. If it was just Chris and I newly there, I wouldn’t go πŸ˜‰

i haven’t been able to find fantastic pandan leaf chicken over here in singapore. the picture you took of the pandan leaf chicken looks DAMN good!

Mannnn we have sooo many Thai restaurants in Seattle, but none that I know of that serves the pandan chicken and coconut desserts! I miss so much! I also miss their dessert/drink called Red Rubies.

That’s so weird cos all the Thai restaurants I know have those dishes!

I love Red Rubies too.. sadly this place sold out that night πŸ™

Finding a great hole-in-the-wall restaurant is one of the best feelings, in my opinion. I am so jealous you were able to order pandan leaf chicken! I can’t find it here in Los Angeles and had to resort to trying to recreate the recipe myself.

I’m with ya! It’s such fun finding these places.. I’m so impressed you made your own pandan leaf chicken though – WOW!
