Mamak
15 Goulburn St
Haymarket, NSW 2000

I have found my holy grail!!! Eeeee!!!!!!! I discovered that Mamak has opened right in the middle of the City.. serving authentic Malaysian/Singaporean food. It’s done hawker-centre style, with those little stools around a table and a packed/jostling atmosphere. When we rocked up, I noticed to my delight that THEY WERE FLIPPING ROTI PRATAS AT THE FRONT. OMGGGGG!!! They are the only place in Sydney that make their roti pratas fresh, and for that reason alone, I knew we had found a winner πŸ˜€

Service is really friendly and sweet, albeit a bit frazzled, because they’re so new (they only opened this month). Price-wise, it’s reasonable compared to Australian restaurants, but super-expensive compared to Singapore (eg. AU$5 for a plain roti prata VS AU$0.50 for the exact same thing in Singapore). Despite that, the place is absolutely jam-packed with Malaysians and Singaporeans eager to satisfy their local food craving.

The food that I had was really spot-on, so tasty and authentic. Tried to eat my way around the menu and ended up eating 4 dishes all by myself – HAHA! As expected, was stagging around afterwards up to my eyeballs in food, and feeling quite ill. But it was worth it. I just loved it, the food, the atmosphere, EVERYTHING. And I’m delighted that we *finally* have authentic local food in the middle of the City and so close to where I live! I’ve got a dinner date there with my girl friend after work next week, and expect to go there over and over and over and over again πŸ˜‰

Photos below are of all the food that I ate for dinner (apart from the 2 takeaway dishes).. and YES I am aware that I am a pig for consuming all that but could you really blame me?! Every calorie was worth it πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€

Mamak – Malaysian Roti and Satay

The cheery dude flipping Prata

The tiny place, jampacked with greedy people

Pretty much everyone there was Singaporean or Malaysian. I felt right at home πŸ˜€

Cheery menu

I started salivating upon opening it

They have freshly ‘pulled’ Teh Tarik!!! In authentic local mugs!!

Roti Telur Bawang – roti with egg & onions, 2 curry dips and spicy sambal sauce (AU$6.50)
OMG so nice and hearty. I want to try the plain version next!

Roti Tisu – paper thin, extra crispy and served tall (AU$7)
Crispy, light and fun πŸ˜€

Chicken satay – grilled over flaming charcoal, with sweet and spicy peanut sauce (AU$6)
The star dish IMHO. You absolutely won’t find this anywhere else in Sydney.

Roti Kaya – roti filled with traditional spread made from pandan & coconut, served with ice cream (AU$6.50)
Really tasty, but a bit big. Should serve half the portion for half the price!

Kacang Panjang Belacan – stir-fried long beans with chillies & spice paste (AU$10)
Soooo spicy but bursting with flavour. Yum!

Kari Kambing – lamb curry slow-cooked until tender (AU$12)
Probably the dish I liked the least. Not as tender as they promise πŸ˜‰

Mamak!

Hi Beverly,
Been a visitor to your site for a few months now. I was craving Malaysian tonight and had my heart set on Mamak for dinner…but it seems to be closed. I’m hoping they’re just closed on Mondays. I was very disappointed! πŸ™

Re: Mamak!

OMG!! There’s a mamak place in Sydney? *wets his pants*

I’ve been saying for about 4 years now that there should be a mamak store in Sydney. I even contemplated importing Indian/Malays to set up a store πŸ˜›

i’ve smartened up… i am only reading your blog in the day, so right now, i am heading out for some good ol’ jalan kayu prata to satisfy my cravings…

but seriously, you ate that all by yourself??? O_O
and you are still the size that you are???

and you are probably the only person i can think of who can spend AU$40 on “local” food just for one person (aka you)
@_@

I had no choice y’see.. i HAD to eat as much as I could stuff in cos i was so excited, heh!! I can’t wait to go back and get more πŸ˜‰

Thank you Beverly! I think this will be my permanent lunch time hangout as it’s close to my office. Thinking of it now is making my tummy rumble.

I stumbled across this place on Friday night- there was still a line at 9:30pm! It was worth the wait though, the satay sticks were sooo good!

Will def be back there soon!

Yeah that’s one benefit of living in Sydney.. at least it has nice Singaporean food around.. I coudln’t cope without getting my fix every so often, hehe!

oh my goodness!!
even their cups are authentic looking πŸ˜›
thanks for the recommendation, i must go….
oh, and i went to ginger and spice after reading your post.. their oyster omelette was to die for!!

Ooh, char-grilled satays! Where is this place? I don’t think I’ve ever seen the logo and I go to Haymarket a lot. I’m really bad at finding addresses, haha.
