8 of us visited the very chic, very elegant, Zilver for yum cha for lunch yesterday. We arrived at 11am, pretty early for lunch. It was a wise decision though, because the restaurant was already packed at that time and when we were leaving there were tons of hungry people milling outside waiting for a table. The restaurant is huge, yet completely full, despite the tables being packed sardine-style in the huge dining hall. We were ushered by the waitress down a little corridor, and I kinda said, a bit weirded out, “Are you sure they know we’re here to eat and not trying to get a job in the kitchen?” It really seemed like they were taking us to the back kitchen or something π But then we got to a door that opened into a big ‘private’ dining room, with around 5 large tables.
Despite being set apart from the majority of diners, we didn’t have to wait long for the food and were still well taken care of. Generally, yum cha restaurants feature crap service – very rude, brusque and generally unfriendly. But the ladies pushing the carts around were all very lovely and weren’t too pushy. Interestingly, basically every dish is stampled either a Large or Extra large.. despite the piece of paper/bill/receipt also listing the existence Small and Medium dishes – probably just for show, since even the most standard/cheapest dishes we ordered were Large. Hah.
We ordered up an absolute STORM. Tons and tons of food, yet we managed to stuff in pretty much all of it into our bellies π Then we went a bit mad an ordered TONS of dessert too, and had to also stuff it all in! Was terribly full afterwards, but the food is really fresh and delicious so it was worth it.

MY FAVOURITE FAVOURITE YUM CHA DISH!!!!
The 1st round of food on our table
A very weird Egg & Ginger Custard, meant to be a dessert
Evidently, I did NOT like it!
Mango Pudding
Mmm.. now this is my kinda dessert
Weird cold, sticky, black sesame rolls
Sweet tofu dessert
I loved this one!
Mango Crepes
With mango and cream inside… oooooo!

I tried this, my 1st taste of durian in my entire life. It was alright.
Custard Tarts
The BEST I’ve ever had. They were hot from the oven
and were to-die-for!!!!!
omg, I missed your entries soo much!
Hi, this is!! Just wanted to let you know that I’ve moved to and added you here. π
Re: omg, I missed your entries soo much!
Oo hi hon! I added ya!
I didn’t get to have much for dinner tonight, so this post is KILLING ME! Huuuuungry.
I was naughty and had dinner and a beer, then shopping with friends.. instead of going to the gym! Boo! Wish we lived in the same area, I need more gym buddies, hehe!
Ya, it would be handy! hey, but you did have yummeh food!
I really do not like Zilver…. service is poor, food quality is….mmm.. fine, environment is a little sterile, prices are expensive. Of course, I’m talking about going there for dinner – I’ve never been during yum cha lunch.
My pick for favourite chinese restaurant in the CBD would have to be Palace in Picadilly π
What a shame, I found them really lovely and friendly and the dim sum was terrific! I’ve never tried Palace, hmmmm must try that next time!

very chic
it looks very chic indeed! Look how they present the suckling pig, yum!
The whitebaits look amazing too, very white the way I like them (and not golden by old frying oil)
Re: very chic
I love the presentation too, very different to the normal dodgy yumcha places, hehe!
that black sesame roll looks really weird, in all my yum-cha-ing experience, i’ve never ever seen that! *grossly fascinated*
I found it weirdo too… and it tasted and felt strange, all cold and ‘flappy’, ergh!

Ooooooooooooooooooooooo!!! Custard tarts <333333 That's a childhood favorite of mine :)
Those mango crepes look sooo good too!
The custard tarts were the best I”ve had in my life, seriously. I think they’re just best when they’re straight out of the oven. Mmm mm!
ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I LOVE IT!! ….
sorry for shouting … but I think I’m hungry.
I SO want to go back.. I’ve decided I don’t get to eat yumcha nearly enough!

wow never seen the deep fried white bait before lol.
yum i love dim sims, esp ones with prawns in it. and the mango custurd yummmm but gets sickning after awhile.
Oh you have to try fresh Durian fruit. Smells funny but soooo nice! you guys should have them when it’s in season in aus?!
Mango crepe’s sound nice π
We never really have durian in Australia I think, I hardly ever see it and when I do, there’s no smell, so I think it means that it’s not very good??
SOOO much food!! I love durian. :P~
I find the fruit sooo smelly, I’ve never dared to try it. But pudding-style, it was alright!
The white bait looks delectable. You always take such yummy and sharp pics! π
I didn’t have much time to take the pics cos everyone would reach over and grab some food, so it was just for a split second, HAHA! π

Your favourite yum cha dish is one of my favourites too! There’s something about the texture of it :).
Those custard tarts look splendid!
yees! I like how those ‘rugby balls’ (as I call them) are squishy and chewy.. mmmmmmmm…
Omg, your first taste of durian in your life so far??
You have got to try out creamy durian puffs, make sure it’s a tad cold for that extra yummy taste! At least the taste wouldn’t be as intruding for durian noobies as when you eat the fruit itself. =P
But weird, why was the durian pudding green ar?
Yeah I think the puffs will be not too bad, cos the fruit is just insanely smelly *holds nose*
I think it’s just food colouring that makes the pudding green..
I love your face when trying one of the desserts. I can’t believe you never tasted durian before in your life and the mango crepes look especially interesting.
Durian’s always been a bit too stinky for me, but the pudding was tolerable. Don’t know if I can handle the actual fruit though π
I just love the custard tarts at yum cha.. They’re always deliciously flakey and beautiful. I just can’t seem to find tarts with a comparable flakiness outside of yum cha!
I’m not normally huge on the tarts because I find they’re nice but not amazing at the different yumcha places here, so I was totally blown away with these! But I think the reason they were so nice is because they were piping hot and fresh out of the oven, whereas most places have it pre-made. I wanna go back for moooore!
wow never seen the deep fried white bait before lol.

Beverly, I’ve never seen coconut jelly in any of your yum cha posts. How come?
I love all of the food at yum cha, but I’d have to say that the desserts are the highlight of yum cha for me. Mango pudding, coconut jelly, mango pancakes, warm egg tarts… Delicious!
I’ve seen and heard plenty about the sweet tofu, but I don’t think I’ve ever tried it. I’ll try it next time.
Coconut jelly? I don’t think I’ve seen that before…!
The sweet tofu is awesome. A lot of Aussies don’t like it though, but I loooove it
This doesn’t look familiar? It’s so delicious. You must try it!
Deep fried white bait? Is that like fish fries? It looks really good. When I first saw it, I thought it was french fries. Hehe… π
Yeah kinda I think! Just mini fish deep fried. They’re tasty like fries :)~
I don’t know why but you making that “Ew this is nasty!” face tickles me so LOL
It was such a strange ‘dessert’! like steamed egg custard and ginger.. urghh
Goodness gracious! All the food looks amazing and so yummy! My fav yum cha food, next to Mango pudding is ham shui kok too! Miss that so much…
Btw, not sure if you can read Chinese but the words on the wall of the private dining room are actually from 1 Corinthians 13…you know, Love is patient, kind etc…?
Yum cha’s so fun with a great of people too, we said we’d have to do a monthly yum cha club or something π
I didn’t know about the bible verse, WOW, so they’re a christian restaurant…. that is really cool:)

oh wow, this entry has made me SO HUNGRY. namely, the mango crepe (the color is so beautiful!) and the custard tartlet – i could eat a dozen of those. in fact you’ve inspired me to go get some in chinatown tomorrow
i feel like i never eat anything interesting compared to you!
although i did have this haagen dazs special flavor called “sticky toffee pudding” and it was to die for.
I normally don’t love custard tarts THAT much, but these were SO GOOD it was unbelievable! I’d go back just for more of those.. hehe
Ooooo the ice cream sounds so nice though, I wonder if they have it near me.. hrmmmmm
TOTALLY ♥♥♥ dim sum!
