ohh. FF is horrible. they called me up the day after i had a major accident and continued to hard sell their membersehip even after i said i am in not in the right mind to make any decision atm. so i joined Definition instead.

Wow that’s so awfully pushy of them.. they called me constantly too, a while back when I left my details for a lucky draw. ARghhhh

Have you seen Dodgeball? I like to think of FitnessFirst as GloboGym. Ha! Main reason I like it is coz I can go to any of their locations. But I agree, the hardsell is really offputting.

Have a look at your workplace and see if they have some sort of discount for corporates, and some health care funds offer rebates on gym memberships. And.. they don’t advertise this, but if you join up, and then decide to cancel, they’ll start offering all sorts of other plans to try keep you on their books.

Noo I haven’t seen it, but yeah, I’m basically looking around and trying various gyms in the area before I commit to one, then I’ll bargain them down as much as I can πŸ˜› Thanks for the tip about cancelling too!

ooh I was shopping around for a good gym too and actually signed up yesterday! 170$ sign up fees is insane though πŸ™ I’d much prefer spending that money on clothes as well haha πŸ˜‰

I think on Fri they had a free signup day! But they don’t advertise it and never tell you unless you’re really reluctant to sign, then they tell you to use it as part of their hard sell tactic.. blah! But if I do join up, I’ll def wait for one of those days. Hope you enjoy the gym! Istill can’t decide if it warrants the $ as I’ll have to go regularly πŸ˜›

Wow $80 a month! Fernwood would be a better option – pity there’s not one nearby! I don’t like the sounds of them! πŸ™

It’s funny how the Fitness First here in SG is totally different. Not crowded because they limit the number of members in a month, totally not pushy (unlike California and Planet Fitness), and the facilities are better..

It sounds nice in SG! Here’s it’s like the hard sell and cram in as many ppl as possible.. it’s packed as hell and even queues for machines. Bleh!!!

With the gym very near your house, I think you should sign up for it. Many people gave up because the gyms are too far from their workplace or home.

I’ve just signed up with Fitness First too. If you get the Passport, you can continue to workout while in Singapore. But since I don’t travel much and other gyms in town are too far for me, I’m sticking to the one in the suburbs.

Yeah that’s true, the proximity is just fantastic. How much is your FF membership? Here it’s AU$170 to sign up, and $80/month for 12 months. I think it’s really pricey πŸ™

sign up fee S$300, but there was 90% discount, so it was $30. However, because I had UOB credit card, it was waived. I still had to pay $88 for admin fee though. I pay $108 per month, for 12 months minimum. If I want to use other gyms, either in Singapore or the rest of the world, I will have to pay $133, so I didn’t take that up.

You’re lucky you got the signup fee waived, it’s so $! looks like FF is def more expensive there.. but I still find $ for me, I’m so stingy when it comes to the gym, haha:P

I used to hold fitness first memebership in Brisbane. I thought they offered rather good facilities and classes (although their classes can get rather packed). I didn’t know they are that pushy and sales orientated there in Syd!

I like it here in Singapore. They don’t do so much of hard selling compared to Cali Fitness, etc in Singapore. πŸ™‚ They just give a better vibe over here! But, unfortunately, they are one of the most pricey here in Sg.

Some are pushy, but I found a guy today who was super nice and just really helpful. I’ll def sign up with him if I choose to!
I’ve seen Cali Fitness in SG.. soo many people in there, i think it’s like FF her

ha-ha)))poor boy in you gym he might have good nerves!

here is 80$ for gym it is very cheep. Really… 150$ – this is a minimum . I even do not mention World class which is very very expensive.

Wow $80 a month! Fernwood would be a better option – pity there’s not one nearby! I don’t like the sounds of them! πŸ™

Gym nut speaking here…yup, Spin’s gonna be rough for a first-timer, but as time passes, you really get the Runner’s High, so it’s well-worth th hard work!

As for BodyPump (BP), if you do it really regularly, you will find yourself much leaner, but start with really really light weights, otherwise, you will never forgive yourself when you wake up the next day with a sore body.

Best tracks to burn fat in BP? Track 2 (squats) and Track 4 (back)

HTH!

Wow you really know your stuff! I chickened out on BP today.. I was just SO SO SO sore from 3 classes in the past 12 hrs (really insane), and din’t dare to do another class in case I faint πŸ˜‰ I think BP would be really good for me though, I’ll def do it if I join the gym!

heck, if the gym is right next door, you really can’t go wrong! next time you go in to visit, ask to speak to a manager and tactfully let them know you’re quite annoyed by that sales guy. he almost seems a bit…harassing, really. you hate to piss someone off, but you should start talking to someone else. :p i pay $52US for my gym. it’s 10 minutes away and haven’t visited in awhile. if it were even closer, i’d probably go even more.

Yeah, I found another guy that wasn’t pushy at all, but really helpful and gave me tips like to wait for when they waive the startup fee, etc. He’s great! If I can get the startup fees waived and just pay the $80/month, it’s likely Ill go with that..

Exactly what I did. The girl I worked with at mine? Let me know ahead of time when they were doing a startup fee of $1 plus two months free! That is the right kind of sale person right there.

Yeah fortunately I’m clued in about their stupid sales tactics, so I’ll be quite happy to say BUZZ OFF if they’re too pushy, heh!

I take Body Pump at my gym… it’s AMAZING! Its an icnredible work out. You will think you are going to die the first time, but it gets easier. And its really fun, they change up the music and the exercise, and the music is super motivating. Hope you enjoy it!

Woo hoo, I’m doing it later this afternoon so I’m looking forward to it. I’m VERY unfit though, so I might faint after 10 mins πŸ˜‰

IMHO, if you purchase a cycling machine and dumb bells to put at home and maybe a few exercise dvds, it’ll be much more worth it. Especially so when you’re already slender and very flexible. Why make your nose suffer around smelly people, right?

And these people will keep on pushing you to sign on other separate packages a few months into your membership. I hate that.

Yeah I’d love to work out at home but i don’t want to get a machine, it’ll be too squished in my apartment πŸ™ I just wish gyms were cheaper, they’re ridiculously $$!

Are there any other gyms in your area? The gym I go to is also quite crowded, but I’m loathe to switch since I’m only paying $32/month with no sign up/initiation fee (what the heck is that fee for anyways?). I just hate waiting around for equipment, and like you, I’m not a big fan of the qym equipment being close together because some people just SMELL. Ugh. A few of my friends belong to smaller gyms which don’t have as many classes but are never crowded, even immediately after work.

I’m not sure, but this FF is seriously the next building down from where I live. You’re paying such a good price! $80/month is quite insane.. I’d do it for $50.

I joined Fitness First when I was still in Perth, but only went there twice. I just didn’t have enough motivation to exercise and get healthy, I guess! haha… I had the same experience – I was only coming in to look around, but one of the girls there kept asking me to fill out the long form. Then after a few months I tried to cancel the membership but they told me that I couldn’t do that… instead, I had to find someone else who’s willing to continue my membership. Ahhh such a waste of money. The classes were pretty good, though. I did the Body Pump and Jazz (if I’m not mistaken! can’t remember the exact name) classes. I nearly died in the Body Pump class =P

You CAN cancel but they make you jump through hoops for as long as possible so they can deduct another month(s) off your card. Fortunately I’m very clued in to their dodgy tactics so hopefully I’ll be more aware if I do choose to join!

i’m going to pump later this afternoon.. I hope i survive πŸ˜›

Oooooh I would love to be as flexible as you! Was it because you did ballet/dancing when you were younger? I think if you were doing yoga there would be more focus on inner calm and medidatative aspects rather than doing becoming flexible (not that you could find that in a packed gym class – probably somewhere in newtown with other yoga teachers :P). also you could do the weird freaky poses – try an advanced class in a heated room (there’s a special type of yoga for that) – that would be intense! embrace your inner hippy πŸ˜€

My physio said i was just born that way.. it’s not really very good, as my joints easily dislocate and pop back in! LIke if I just sit on the ground with my feet together, froggy style, my hip bones can dislocate then later pop back in. WEIRD..

Yeah I’ve heard of that ashtanga yoga or whatever it’s called. I think yoga’s too boring for me though, I like cardio πŸ˜›

Yeah fortunately I’m clued in about their stupid sales tactics, so I’ll be quite happy to say BUZZ OFF if they’re too pushy, heh!

aarrrghhh i hate absolutely hate fitness first! I joined for 14 days and discontinued my membership…
I went to the city bond street gym because it was close to my (previous) work and it was always so packed…people waited around10-15 mins for a treadmill, just standing there…what a work out…not

give me Fernwood any day! It may be alittle more but it worth every penny.

Did they give you grief for discontinuing? I’ve heard that once you’re a member you can’t just get a cancellation form you have to see a “cancellation manager” (haha) and it takes a month to make an appt with them so they can charge you an extra month, etc.
I’m at that Bond one too! it was so packed and people were smelly in the class, haha. i’m going at 9am for the Pilates class and 4pm for the Bodypump so I’ll see how it goes…

Fernwood isn’t in the city, such a bummer:(

actually luckily it was still the cooling off period so the manager basically said ‘whyyy’ and i said ‘i dont like it’ and he was like ‘fine’ and it was all done…
yeah the bond street one god take a look at the showers…they are practically see through, i used it one morning and i turned to one side and there was BUTT and then the other side and I saw BUTT! and girls were just walking around with just undies on…so many practically naked women! it was crazy.
Another time i went after work it was so packed girls were asking strangers if they cold share their locker it was so weird.
My friend told me She Health clubs are pretty good..maybe suss that out too. there is one at wynyard…

Ugh! Pushy bloke alright, definitely don’t be giving your money through him!!

I’m not into the crowdy thing either, although shiny new equipment sounds good, some of the bikes at my gym are starting to squeak a bit and I can’t get as good a workout out of them.

Yeah their hard sell tactics piss me off :X
Which gym do you use? I like this FF since it’s the building next to my apt!

it’s kinda like Maccas here, a chain gym. I wouldn’lt say it’s particularly classy cos there are SO many people, but it’s close to me!
