Food reviews - Singapore A FEAST AT HUP CHOON 3 January 2012

Hup Choon Eating House
1 Binjai Park
Singapore
PRICE: $$
RATING: ?????

Man I love Hup Choon Eating House. It’s perfectly encompasses pigging out on simple Singaporean home-cooked food. Cheap, but oh so good. The story is, Chris and I go over to my aunt and uncle’s place for dinner every 1-2 weeks. It’s a bit of a hassle because we always have Hunter in tow (who we need to bath beforehand, so we can put him down to sleep in the bedroom upstairs), but we still love it because it’s always fun to have a meal with family, and because they always have healthy food. We start off by eating fruits, and it’s basically the only time Chris and I eat fruit (sad but true). Then there’s always steamed fish, veggies etc which is healthy too. But, my aunt knows we have a limit to our ‘health kick’ at her place, and always thoughtfully makes sure there is an UNhealthy dish from Hup Choon sitting on the table πŸ˜›

But since we were a really large group this time, we ate at Hup Choon instead and so got to order ALLLLLL their food, instead of having just one dish. It was like being a kid in a candy store πŸ˜› You rock up casually dressed and sit by the roadside for a bit of a feast, and if you’re lucky, they’ll tie a plastic table cloth onto your table (ooooooh fancy!). A cold beer appears and you’re set to go.

It's beer o'clock

Service is brisk and the food arrives quickly at our table. The fab thing about Hup Choon is that their dishes are always spot on – cooked well, and fantastic flavour. I don’t think we’ve really had any ‘miss’ dishes from them? Or maybe we always just luck out and get the yummy ones πŸ˜›

Coffee Pork Ribs - perfection. Sounds like a weird combo but the scent/taste of the coffee goes so well with the tender pork. YUM! My all-time #1 dish here.

Tofu and seafood in an eggy sauce - not too overly salty and beautifully creamy

Cereal-crusted prawns - crispy goodness

Yam basket filled with seafood and cashews - I didn't have any of this, not a fan of yam!

Fried calamari - my other fave dish. It's so crisp and tasty... and sinful πŸ˜›

Veggies and mushrooms - kinda boring but tasty

Sweet & sour pork - one of the few places that do it well. No weird floury bits and absolutely delicious.

All of us! (minus Chris' brother who was taking the photo)

My nephew Elliot was in his element having so many people around.. and spent most of them time running around, and performing/singing πŸ˜‰ I can’t wait til Hunter is around that age too, it’s too cute!

Nice! If you like tze cha food (which you seem to do), you might wanna try this place that’s really near Bukit Timah Market.. it’s directly across the road from the gas station next to the Market (the one that has Cheers). It’s along Jln Jurong Kechil, FYI. I can’t remember the name, but their food has yet to disappoint. Their hot plate tofu isn’t on the menu but you HAVE to try it! Another fave of mine is the san lor hor fun (basically just fish w/ beansprouts and horfun); good for days when I don’t want something too heavy but not tasteless. πŸ˜›

ohhh thank you for the rec, we are def gonna go check it out!! One question – are they pretty easy to find and are open evenings? (I guess that was 2 questions, haha)

Haha yep, if I remember correctly their signboard’s red, and yes they’re open every night til 10PM. Just remember, it’s across the road but actually sort of next to Cheers.. if that makes any sense. Also, it’s along Jln Jurong Kechil, so as long as you don’t stray you’ll be fine.

Enjoy! Let us know how it went; I’m hoping more people will know about the place and visit in the future so that the owner will extend their closing time to midnight like most tze cha places. 😑

πŸ™‚ love the video!

I’m beginning to see Amanda in Ellie? Its always “Mini Merv” but somehow he looks different here.

Wow to the food!

You just inspired/reminded me that I love the bak kut teh there.. their peanuts are yum! Think I’ll go this week for lunch πŸ˜›

you didn’t specifyn clearly enough… it’s fried calamari coated with egg yolk! *drool*
