Friends, Parties, Uncategorized PHO DINNER PARTY 16 March 2008

Was lucky enough to have, for the first time in my entire life, proper authentic home-cooked Vietnamese Pho! *smug grin*

Our French friends hosted the Pho party and she’s of Vietnamese descent, so we were convinced we were in for a treat πŸ˜› The cooking started 3 days(!) prior, so the pork bones and marrow infuse into the broth. This means, there is NO use of msg or beef stock (which is cheating, btw).. but pure Pho broth made in the most natural way. Mmmmmm…..

We arrived in the afternoon, so we could go for a dip at their pool. I’ve been to the beach last week, to the pool, and also again to the beach today, but have got NO TAN WHATSOEVER!! So sad!! I’m destined to be pasty-white for life *cries*

ANYWAY. Chris and I brought all the ingredients for Vietnamese rice paper rolls, which was our appetizer. I’m glad we did – it was fun rolling our own rolls and chattering away πŸ™‚ It turned out pretty well too, especially after we finally discovered the ‘right’ way to dip the rice paper sheets into the water so they didn’t go soggy and fall apart.

The Pho was obviously what made us all go weak at the knees though. The broth was rich and full of (natural) meaty flavour, and the beef! OOH!!! It was all super tender and really really tasty. And unlike what you get at restaurants, there was TONS of beef. We slurped away and gobbled up our noodles, before sitting back and patting our happy bellies.

But wait, there’s more!! Another couple brought a homemade Strawberry Tiramisu, complete with fresh strawberry puree. Mmmm… I’m not a fan of cream (actually, I hate it), but this cream was rich and, err, creamy. I can’t stand that normal weird cream, but this one was different (mascarpone?). The moist sponge fingers were the best though…. mmmmmm!!

Sat round afterwards and bummed the night away, before playing a French game – Werewolf. It’s basically a social/strategic thinking game, similar to Murder Mystery/Mafia. The site says it originated in Russia but the game we played was in French so I’m calling it a French game πŸ˜› It was almost 2am by the time we left, so you can imagine how interesting it was! Ahhhh was a nice day/night, please don’t go away Summer days!

Speaking Mandarin with a French guy that can speak it fluently!! *impressed*

I am seriously soooooooooo jealous right now. I had pho last night at my local favorite pho restuarant. But WOW to have it made for you by friends and chatting away. JEALOUS!!! I need to move to Austrlia and become friends with you!!! Your friends & dinner parties seem so fun. πŸ™‚

Hehe it definitely was fun, and the first time I’ve had homemade Pho! now i’m going to be sooo critical of the ones outside now…….

You are so lucky to have good friends who cook! My friends generally don’t – we end up eating out, which is fine, but I would love some homemade pho!

I used to love Pho but now I have a *Pho Phobia* — we ordered beef pho at this Vietnamese restaurant and they brought out the soup and the beef seperate. The beef was bloody and they told us to cook it in the hot soup. I felt sick looking at the bloody beef and I never wanted to eat pho again. πŸ™

Awww bummer. They do normally serve the thinly-sliced raw beef separately on top of the broth which you then stir in to cook (unless you order the version that has it all pre-cooked in the broth), but it’s usually not bloody at all!

So we’ve been relegated to being simply “another couple” now are we??? Oh that stings it does……

And are you still persisting with the delusional notion that you can actually speak fluent mandarin? πŸ˜›

That, or Korean couple, take your pick πŸ˜‰

Eric totally understood what I was staying in Mandarin!! Just cos yours sucks……..

Oh, I love your dress! Who is it by? And, you look really good with the curls. Gives you an added sophistication πŸ™‚
