Ferrets, FOOD, My recipes, Uncategorized MAKAN & ALICE’S, MACRO CAFE, HOMECOOKED SALMON 28 May 2006

It’s been a pretty hectic weekend, mostly filled with looking after Misty and Star and introducing them to each other. A bit of tussling and chasing around but they’re now happy to each wander around the place and do their own thing – so I couldn’t ask for more, considering it’s only 24 hours of meeting each other! Hopefully by 2 weeks or so they’ll start loving each other and become best friends πŸ™‚

Star likes nothing more than walking around looking for me, then putting her paws up onto my legs and looking at me… then I pick her up and she curls onto my lap to sleep. It’s really sweet.. if I pick her up and put her on the couch next to me, she’ll wake up, look around, then crawl back onto my lap and snuggle back down. Soooooooo endearing!! So far, Misty’s the one that looks for me when she wants to play and go mad, and Star’s the one that looks for me for quiet-time and sleep.

Anyway, a weekend wouldn’t really be a proper weekend without some food pics, right? Right. So here we go…

Makan @ Alice’s

Alice’s doesn’t need an introduction nor full review IMHO, if you’ve been reading this blog for awhile πŸ˜› It’s a staple of ours, we go there every 2-3 weekends for our “Singaporean food fix”. A family-run restaurant, they’re tucked away into the corner and pretty obscure.. so Chris almost always is the only Caucasian person there. The good thing about that is that they recognise us and always greet us with a cheery “Oh! Hi!” They’re also accustomed to Chris order – which NEVER EVER changes and is rattled off by him “I’d like a char kway teow please, medium spicy and no bean sprouts. And a sago with gula melaka with not too much gula melaka, can you bring it out a little later for dessert” *lol*!

Me? I try and eat my way around the menu… so this time, I chose Roti Chanai with Chicken Curry. It was friggin’ sublime!!!!!! The roti was all buttery and puffy, and the chicken curry was really really soft with the perfect spot-on curry flavour (not the absurd-tasting “curry” that food courts here love to serve). I only wished the portion of curry was twice the size.. it was so good I didn’t wait to stop eating!

Also got a Yam cake thingy.. I forgot the actual Chinese name. A lady was there and saw me buying it, and asked me what it was. I was trying so hard to describe it!! “errr.. it’s kind of a cake. But not. Umm.. it’s savory.. not sweet… you can cut it up in cubes and eat it after it’s been warmed back up… really good with the chilli sauce. It’s just really really nice!” And that’s all I can do to describe it for you too πŸ˜› All up, 2 mains, 1 dessert and 1 yam thingy was AUD$28 which is pretty decent.

McDonalds

Couldn’t be bothered to put an address above.. since you’d be living under a rock if you haven’t heard of it, ha ha! Realised with complete shock that I hadn’t had Maccas in… over a month? At least? So it was hi-ho hi-ho it’s off to Maccas we go! Maccas always gives me fond memories of when Chris and I were living on campus.. we’d have what we call Maccas Feasts, where we’d order Quarter Pounders, Nuggets, Fries and Coke. We’d bring it all back to one of our rooms, lay it all out on the bed (because our college rooms were crap and didn’t even have chairs to sit on) and sit and watch a DVD whilst we pigged out. Ahhhhh…. those were the days.

Anyway, so we did just that and ordered our regular selection of food. Maccas is like a drug – the more you eat it, THE MORE YOU WANT! I really could eat it every day, in fact, I used to through Uni.. but I don’t anymore. I miss it. Food was terrific as usual and we were given a free! Cadbury chocolate brownie with ice cream and chocolate fudge. Yummers!!

My all-time favourite burger – Quarter Pounder!

Mmmmm… ahhhhh….. *drools*….

Chicken nuggets – love these with curry sauce and sweet & sour sauce

Since deciding to become somewhat healthy (uh.. ignore the McDonalds feast above please), I’ve become quite fascinated with the Macro organic store. I’d bought groceries there before but never actually ate at the cafe and thought it’d be a good idea to negate the ‘bad’ food we’d eaten the previous day πŸ˜‰

I was annoyed when the girl at the counter put a completely random item in the machine and thus overcharged us – without an apology when I pointed it out (and I only caught it because I was watching like a hawk). Was further annoyed when Chris’ dish never did come out.. and only after I asked the guy what the hell was going on. He, however, was a complete sweetie and immediately brought it out (amidst a flurry of apologies) and even offered both of us a “free coffee or tea”, which we declined but I thought was really nice πŸ™‚

Food was great though, after that annoying hiccup(s). I got the organic mushroom, tomato and pesto flan with a serve of pumpkin salad. I’d asked for the flan to be warmed up, but again the stupid girl made it only lukewarm. Nevertheless, the flan was fantastic, though it would have been better hot! Lovely and tasty and the pastry was thick and buttery. The side salad was pretty big and a meal in itself – wonderful soft pumpkin, nuts and mixed lettuce.. yum!

Chris got the organic spaghetti with beef and mustard. It came with a massive helping of shaved cheese on top, but when stirred it, the cheese disappeared and just gave the pasta a lovely rich flavour. The pasta was unbelievable!! I believe it just had olive oil and mustard seeds (and perhaps some other ingredients/flavours I couldn’t identify) but it was so flavourful and the perfect comfort food. There were thick chunks of beef in there – I normally don’t order beef outside, as it’s often tough, but this was so so so tender and soft it just melted in our mouths. Lovely πŸ™‚

The organic supermarket, bought some lovely fruit & veg there!

All washed down with a Mocha Truffle, creamy hot cocoa
combined with espresso, milk, whipped cream and sprinkles. Divine.

Since I had some lovely organic groceries.. I wanted to make a fresh & healthy dinner. Decided on an all-organic pan-fried herbed salmon with avocado salsa, corn-on-the-cob and salad. All up, it took 10+ mins to cook and maybe another 5-10 mins to put everything together – simple, healthy, and deeeelish!

Pan-fried herbed salmon with avocado salsa, corn-on-the-cob and salad

Pan-fried herbed salmon with avocado salsa, corn-on-the-cob and salad (serves 1)

1 salmon
1 tsp coriander leaves, chopped
1/2 tsp cumin
1/2 tsp mustard seeds
1/2 avocado
1/3 red onion
Dash of tabasco
1 corn
Spinach leaves
1/2 tomato

1) Rub coriander, cumin, mustard seeds, salt & pepper on salmon
2) Panfry skin-side down for a few mins until crisp, then flip
3) Mash avocado with red onion and tabasco, add pepper to taste
4) Microwave corn with husk (silks removed) for 5 mins on high. Stand 3 mins.
5) Place everything on plate and serve with spinach & sliced tomato

Very true, IMHO!

I’m going to have it for dinner tonight with some chicken nuggets I think… mmm!

Star is just adorable! I hope they end up really liking (and not just tolerating) eachother πŸ™‚ But how cute is that? that she cuddles in your lap!!

I admit to loving the quarter pounders too (with cheese and extra pickles for me:) And I see you eat a boat load of avocados too…lol…I was SOOO aggrevated yesterday. I had bought 5 and put them on the counter and didnt take them out of the bag. Looked at them yesterday and they were fuzzy. I was so sad to throw them out…I eat them almost every day, I think

mmmmmm quarter pounders are the best! my next fave is the macchicken :)~

Heh yeah, I OD on avocados, haha.. how quickly do they go off though?? Sucks that you lost all 5 *cries*

OMG all that food looks delish!!!

& Triple-treat Cadbury brownie with soft-serve ice cream and choc fudge look soooo sinfully yummy, you got me drooling!!!

& Star is soooooo sweet!!! The fact that she just met you & is soooo sticky to you shows how much she loves you. Awwwwwww!!!

Yeah Misty’s not too bad, they chase each other around and tussle, but no huge fights/yells, etc.. I’m just making sure Misty gets more attention than usual so that she sees Star as a positive addition πŸ˜›

Misty and Star are both so cute! πŸ™‚ And the food all looks so delicious too, your photos made me hungry hehe

Theyr’e such crazy ‘lil things, but so sweet too.. I’m glad ferrets are more common now in Sydney πŸ™‚

It looks like you had a fun weekend, I indulge in MacDonald’s on the weekend – it’s so delicious. I love the look of the mochas and in the recent entries, you’re becoming quite a cook.

What nugget sauces do you guys get? we get only 3.. the 3rd is bbq but it’s really really strong so i don’t like it as much..

I usually don’t eat mine with sauces – I like them plain. But I think you can get sweet and sour, honey mustard, and BBQ.

Yeah that’s pretty much exactly each! star’s still so new though.. she may change but we’ll see πŸ™‚

Mmmm, that Macro cafe is good. I agree though, the service can be a little bit slow! I love the brown rice nori rolls with organic mayo and ginger in ’em. Yum! I used to love the fried rice and tofu balls, but they changed the recipe. Thhfft! Or maybe I just chose the wrong one last time. I think I’m going to have to try that organic spaghetti with beef and mustard…sounds too good!

Yeah I find the service needs a LOT of brushing up..but the food is good. I had a giggle with the “mung bean pattie” though, it sounds SO unappetizing! πŸ˜›

they give me woeful eyes if i cuddle one but not the other.. but if I pick both up they start wanting to chase each other off! So trying to divide my attention fairly until they become really good friends πŸ˜›
