Salmon does still count if it is smoked, and it’s really good for you as well as being yummy (I think so anyway!!) However, tuna only counts if it is fresh, not if it’s out of a can…it’s because the canning process removes the healthy oils.
Other oily fish such as mackerel are also good.
Someone’s already mentioned using olive oil, which is one of the best things you can use in lowering cholesterol. In the same way, there are now spreads which contain mono-unsaturated fat (the same healthy fat which is in olive oil) which you can use instead of margarine/butter in baking, on toast etc. The commonest brand here (UK) is Olivio, but I’m sure there are others in AUS.
You’re right about nuts, but you need to be careful which ones you have. Fresh natural nuts, like brazil nuts and walnuts, are really good and have lots of healthy oils. Be careful not to go for overly fatty nuts, like macadamias, or to get nuts which are roasted with loads of salt added like peanuts and cashews often are as the salts and roasting oils cancel out the good effects of the nut.
If you’re missing being able to eat snacks like crisps, a really good thing to replace them with is popcorn. Popcorn is really healthy PROVIDED you eat it plain (ie. not dripping with butter and salt, or covered in sugar!) Rice cakes are good too, but unfortunately have the downside of tasting like cardboard (I think anyway).
Well – that’s my advice for you (I knew this medical degree would come in handy sometime!) Good luck with your new healthy lifestyle – it’ll be worth it in the long run – you’re making an investment in your future!!

Hey cool, I always thought salmon might be bad if it’s smoked. I NEVER knew about the tuna though.. so buying tuna in those small cans to eat on bread doesn’t really help? Darn!
I bought olive oil on your recommendation, so I’m good to go π As for nuts, I hate walnuts and only like cashews and pistachios.. heavily salted of course *lol* And I like popcorn but only if it has lots of salt and butter, I hate plain stuff! D’oh… Maybe I’ll focus on exercising instead of eating healthy since it’s probably going to go nowhere π
Yeah sorry about the tuna π It’s still good for you, much better than cholesterol-loaded meat and eggs – it’s just that it doesn’t contain the kind of oils which will actually help LOWER your cholesterol ;(
Exercise is definitely a good way to go, really really important and it also releases endorphins, feel-good hormones, into your body so you should feel really happy afterwards π
Good luck, you’re doing well!!

Olives are a great cholesterol-reducing food. If you’re like me and hate them, though, you can still get the benefits by using olive oil! Not only does it reduce the bad cholesterol in your system, it actually increases the good kind! You can fry with it (in moderation, of course), put it on salads and stuff, or include it in any baking recipe that calls for vegetable oil. It’s great!
I hate olives.. Chris likes them though :T Oooh never thought of olive oil, I bought it already! Can’t wait to try.. I’m making spag bol tonight so I’ll use it then. Yay π

I think chilli is supposed to help break down cholesterol. Dunno if it’s a myth but no harm taking mreo spicy food.
Re: Chilli
Hrmm.. I don’t really like chilli, but I like curry, so I hope that counts π
Hehe I dont think that banana cake still counts as being healthy Bev :).. But I guess its better than Chocolate Mud cake or something like that! Maybe forget about the cake and just eat the banana?

Hey having banana cake is better than no fruit at all π I do eat bananas alone.. but I prefer the super sweet and ripe. I had a mandarin today though – yay!
Good luck Bev! I’m going to the gym at about 6:30 tonight if you wanna come….
mm.. can’t start exercising ’till Tues afternoon, ‘cos I have an exam in the morning. NO I’m not procrastinating my exercise, I really WILL get started on tues!!
I did some aerobic exercises this morning tho so I’m already kinda sore π
well, bittergourd is actually very good for lowering cholesterol. but i don’t think you’d fancy eating it.
Mmm.. is that a fruit? I don’t like the sound of “bitter” in it π
Err..it’s a vegetable not a fruit and it’s awfully bitter! I hate it so I don’t think you’d fancy it either.
I read that green tea helps in lowering chlosterol levels and so does celery π
Ack! Don’t think that’s an option π I hate celery but I do like green tea! Also heard Miso soup is good so I’m going to get some π
