your lucky to be able to fix your own prizes when we re-sell textbooks. my college forces to sell it for the half of what he paid. & you can’t resell a secondhand book. & since i’m in a new program ( the first class is graduting this year) so most of the books are new. & you can’t buy them second-hand expect from old students but they don’t re sell it because umm they need for others classes.

at least my french & english books are cheaper. well, they used to be. this semester is differents cause i have books to read and they are pretty cheap. 10.99$ each but when you have almost 8 for both classes…that starts to cost a bit. the worst things is for my graphic design classes. i have to buy 3 books. i areleady have one. it’s kinda of a serie. i areleady have one thank god. it cost 85 & with tax & the other 2 cost the same things. so imagine what it costs me. & areleady spend 200$ only on that one class. suckers. & now i have to pay 50$ because the college screw up my registration. i mean i said i want the complimentary & when check on the phone during my registration hours (we do it by phone). it said everything has alright. & now im not completely registred. but the phone thing said i was. ahhhhhh. and now i have to pay. to try to put something. & i need to put a class on monday because i have a 4 hours break and i don’t live on campus & going home is like out of question. it dosen’t make sense to go ho me..for an hour of break. ahhh. and i’m not talking abou the lockers. & others stuff.

i hate how collleges take us more money from as each year goes buy. isn’t tuition enough??

Oh it’s cos Studentpoint.com.au is a private and separate from Uni.. heck, if Uni was controlling it, it wouldn’t let us set our own prices – no way! When we do it through the Uni secondhand, you only get 30% back, and then they sell it at 70% of retail! Unis are SO GREEDY around the world ;(
You have to be pretty rich to even go to Uni, ‘cos even though it seems like you’re just paying for the tuition (which isn’t much for a local student), adding books etc etc really pushes everything up :T It sucks especially ‘cos I never use the books again after 6 months, so it’s a huuuge waste of money. Ugh!

I know how it is concerning the fact that a prof will never tell you to read the book and will totally lecture on everything but what is IN the book…then make sure to take everything out of the book when writing that final exam!

books cost way too much to waste like that. my own boyfriend spent $98 on ONE book. They were new that year, so NO ONE could get it used. which sucked. he didn’t even need it. the teacher never did anything with it either.

luckily, our school has a buy back program…but half the time, they barely give you half of what you paid for it originally. and you know they jack the price up to get at least $80 out of it.

it’s truly ludicris….like school’s don’t make enough money as it is…

ugh, do NOT get me started on fees :p.

i could go psycho going off at my university. πŸ˜€ I think any decent college student would. πŸ˜€

Hahaha! That first paragraph you wrote? It’s SO true. And when they actually don’t use or test on the book.. it’s wasted and they still call the book ‘compulsory’ so you still buy it.

Our Uni also buys back the books to sell 2nd hand.. but they buy at 30% of retail, and then re-sell at 70% of retail! It’s insane, the way they think students are so rich to waste all that $$ on books..

Our uni gets a LOT of complaints about it’s wastefullness and now it always digs for more money from students.. urggggggh.

Gawd….Like I said about fees…Pathetic. I just got screwed recently by my school. I had signed up for a dorm, but on the contract, it said that to hold the spot, I had to pay the $400 deposit by June 1. I never did and I ended up finding an apartment. I just got a letter in the mail confirming I still had a room at the school. I called them up to let them know otherwise and they are charging me $400 to cancel! What the f? I can’t get out of it at all. My parents have already went round and round with these idiots.

Also, they charge $225 for the year for parking. ARGH!

Jeepers! That’s so dodgy.. did they say you *didn’t* get a place? They can probably find some legal loophole that forces you to pay either way :T Our deposit is $1260AUD here (!!) but it’s for the first 5 weeks so I guess it’s not like we’re paying extra or anything.. but if you decide to leave anytime during then you don’t get the deposit back :T

30% of retail?? Woot. I’ll be lucky to get 10% back on any books I sell back. I found that selling directly to students means I get more $$$ back. Ask around, send out e-mails, put up posters, to see if anyone is taking the class you’re taking the semester after you’re done and whether they want to buy your textbooks. Win-win situation for both parties!

Yeah but 30% still is pretty low! There’s a site Studentpoint.com.au that i use – it lets you buy/sell directly to other students like you mentioned, so it’s heaps better. the selection is really limited if you want to buy though, since not many people know about it πŸ™

Awwww. I feel bad for ya. Text books shouldn’t cost that much. One of my history books I had in school, if we damaged it at all more than like wear and tear we’d have to pay $80 for it!! But luckily I am careful with my books or I try to be.

Universities should SO subsidize textbooks. I blow on average US$200 on textbooks (AND I buy used) every semester. Even though some of these so-called textbooks are “compulsory,” we end up reading like one book a week for a class, barely skimming the content and then we have no use for it after that week is over! Bah. I swear universities try their very best to suck out every ounce of hard-earned blood money from you so that you end up broke by the time you graduate. Grr.

Have you tried looking at online bookstores? I don’t know any Australian ones, though half.com has good prices and helps you find books from bookstores internationally rather than exclusively in the US. If your university bookstore is anything like mine, books tend to cost more than they do retail. (Our bookstore is now owned by Barnes and Noble and *still* prices are higher than they would be in a regular B&N!)

Re: ack

Apparently our uni already does.. but obviously not much :T But ours really are compulsory – they do test on stuff in the textbook that they never mention in lectures.. I learnt the hard way in first year, grrrr.

I’ll definitely check out Aussie book stores and also the prices of the books in Singapore and get it that way next time. I can’t stand spending hundreds of dollars EVERY semester, and after that never to use the books again!

And it must be pretty expensive for you, seeing that you’re a psychology AND computer science major! At least with English we can make do with borrowing books from the library, from friends, or photocopying (shhh!). Also works of literature are generally more available, I think?

I haven’t bought textbooks for fall yet but last sememster I didn’t spend more than $180 US but I usually buy used books. I sell them back to the bookstore after semester ends anyway.

I tried to get them second hand.. but I generally want them in “as new” condition with no writings or highlighting (they confuse the crap out of me πŸ˜› ) so I could only get 2 out of the 6 books secondhand..
I think next time I’ll take the tip and buy them in Singapore instead – apparently they’re cheaper!

Wha they do

Know what my frens in studying in Oz do?
They buy in bulk from singapore and then ship it over using the DHL jumbo box. So they split the entire cost and they stil get to buy the textbooks at singapore prices, that is, ard $30 odd…

Re: Wha they do

Oh! So the same texbooks are available in Singapore? They’re around $30 or so? That’s heaps cheaper, they’re around $80 here ;( That is SUCH a good idea though, if it’s a lot cheaper.. I’ll do that next time and just put it in cargo when I come back to Australia. Thanks for the idea!

i was told that getting the books in singapore would be way cheaper… that is provided you can find out the titles before school reopens…
