Economic rice is Singapore’s awesome to the everyday dilemma – “What to eat for lunch?” It’s sooo cheap and great variety every day! You’re making me want to go back to Singapore so bad…

I think all Asian cities have different styles of food, so in Shanghai you’ll get a lot of cheap Shanghai and other regions of Chinese food. Otherwise, as you probably realised already, Western food is VERY expensive. I went to a pretty good Thai place which was relatively ok priced. It was 60kuai per person, and we each had a drink. If the Aussie exchange rate wasn’t so bad it’d be all right! πŸ˜› Back in the day that was $10AUD and now it’s almost $15AUD!!! :o( At least you’re getting paid in Chinese Yuan!

We ddin’t find any cheap Shanghai food places.. grrr… will have to get your recommendations once we’ve moved there πŸ™‚ Strangely, even the McDonalds wasn’t that good…

Yeah well it’s taken me awhile too! You need to do a lot of exploring to find places you like because Shanghai is SO big and has SO MANY places, especially for Chinese food, that review websites aren’t so useful. They have this site called Dianping, but until you can read Chinese, it won’t be any use (but you can google it if you like). Definitely you and Chris should just get out and explore your neighbourhood when you arrive, cos I’m sure you’ll find some great eats! You said you’re living around People’s Square? I think it’s also nice near Jing An Temple, LOTS of places to eat that I saw!

McDonalds is weird here, I had a chicken burger and it was really really spicey! You might like the Kentucky better, they do pretty good spicy chicken! Chinese people like Kentucky better than McDonalds, I think it’s cos they don’t like bread THAT much, so hamburgers = not quite as popular.

Yes I’ve heard of Dianping! But impossible to read πŸ˜›

Chris had burger king and he said the burger was awesome, better than Australia’s!

you can choose like 3 veg (from that ‘economic rice’ stalls) and rice for about AU$2.50, and it’s a big portion, it’s so good!

Ohh it’s not near there, it’s actually at the hawker centre @ sunset way, clementi! the choc one is waaay better than the standard peanut ones :)~
