We popped into Rhodes after the RSPCA Million Paws Charity Walk since it’s only next door and we also wanted to check out Ikea for stuff for my new place. Initially we were going to eat at Ikea ‘cos they serve brilliant (and super cheap) food, but got distracted because Rhodes Phoenix was there and was packed πŸ˜› So we ended up with a mini-lunch at Ikea, and then to Rhodes Phoenix for lunch #2 πŸ˜›

The restaurant seats 500, yet there was a 20 min queue since it was full of diners hungrily tucking into yum cha. And man, do they serve a fantastic yum cha. The trolleys power past constantly whilst their trays contents are rattled off at lightning speed. It’s hard not to say “yes!” to every dish on every trolley πŸ˜‰

Rhodes Phoenix

Awaiting the food…

Char Siew Paos (aka BBQ pork buns) – these were so fluffy!!

Beef balls – a bit strange

Rice Noodle Rolls – mmmm…

Deep fried rolls with mince pork – never seen these at yum cha before.. they were great!

Sticky rice – mmmmmmm :)~

Ham Shui Gok – my #1 favourite dish at yum cha

Siew Mai – always the popular one

My favourite guys!

Fabulous dessert of Mango with sago

Some chocolate from Ikea for dessert. It was only $1 for the whole slab!! And it was delicious πŸ™‚

We found a little hole-in-the-wall Korean restaurant, Cafe Cya in Chinatown.. and it is seriously hole-in-the-wall – it’s completely tucked away in this tiny street off the main road and you just wouldn’t notice it. We only found it randomly when we purposely went snooping around the side streets to see what was there πŸ˜› It’s always packed with Koreans, so that’s a good sign! The food is absolutely spectacular, it never fails to impress. The dishes sound like standard Korean fare, but they’re cooked to perfection and delivered with a smile.

What always tickles my fancy is the complimentary kim chi. It comes in an array of little porcelain dishes and delectable little tidbits to snack and nibble on πŸ™‚ Plus they also serve their main dishes with rice – none of that “yeahhh you’ll have to buy rice separately for an extra $2.50” rubbish!! Which means for the standard price, you get a meal that totally fills you up. It don’t get much better than that!

Bul Go Gi (Grilled Marinated Beef) ($13)

Soft Bean Curd Hot Pot ($12)

Sauteed beef julienne and potato noodles with veggies ($12)

Complimentary kim chi

You need to try the mango pancakes @ Rhodes Phoenix. We usually order about 4 plates of it. Try some of the Korean places at Strathfield – Doori or Tomoya are pretty good there too…

Mmm..yummy. Always love your food posts. And you always wear the cutest shirts ever, i think the way you dress really reflects your personality.

Koreans are sneaky. You always have to be really careful when you eat their food. You let your guard down for one second and think all is okay then suddenly BAM!!! It’s fucking bean sprout city right in your face. Buried into every dish. The bastards…..

How could you not eat Mango Pancakes and Egg Tarts at Yum Cha? Egg Tarts are mandatory!!!

The beansprouts in the bul go gi did really piss me off, it seems to be part and parcel of that dish every time!
But it’s worst when one of the kim chi dishes is just pure beansprouts… OMG.

The pancakes and tarts didn’t come past *cries*

The last time i went to rhodes pheonix on a sat, i waited for an hour! so now if i want to go on a weekend, i make sure i reach there by 11am. =P
i love the mango pancakes there! and i will usually have 2 plates to myself! *greedy*

We went on Sun and it was about 30 mins wait.. that’s why we ran to Ikea first to eat in the interim πŸ˜‰ I do think yum cha is best super early like around 11am like you said though..

Have you been to any of their branches before? They do one of the best yumchas in Sydney… next to Zilver!

Mmmmmm Ham Shui Gok and Rice Noodle Rolls are my favorite… heck all the above is my favooorite. I can just taste potato noodles with veggies and add in a little kimchee & seaweed. Ok, I need to go find a restaurant ASAP!!! I’m drooling at work looking at your food blog!!!

Ham Shui Gok is always soooo good, esp at this place. The texture is just perfect!

That Korean place is one of the best ones I’ve had in Sydney too πŸ™‚

Looks good! I love that you always hang out with your dad. I miss mine πŸ™‚ Hope you have a wonderful weekend!

My parents and I are like stuck to each other when they’re here, since I don’t see ’em often! It’s fun going out with them to my regular hangouts and also discovering new spots πŸ™‚

You didn’t have the mango pancakes! But yeah Rhodes Phoenix is always packed on the weekends, especially Sundays.

oh, the dum sum looks SO GOOD. i miss having dim sum regularly. i have never liked those beef balls too much. but everything else = YUM HEAVEN.

Yeah the beef balls were so-so. I expected them to be meatier like the western ones, but they were a bit.. .ermmm.. jelly like. Strange!
