Sailors Thai
106 George Street
The Rocks, NSW 2000
$$$$-

I could’ve sworn that about a year or so ago, Sailors Thai had a lunch special where they served you a dish (yes, just one, no other options available) for $12pp. But now it’s like any other restaurant, with a lunch menu (albeit a bit brief) and wine list. Was I imagining things?? Anyway, they’re otherwise really really pricey but at least their lunch menu is around $25 for a main. Still more than $12 though πŸ˜‰

Mum and Dad arrived early, and so were fortunate to score the best table in the entire place – outdoors on the balcony and in the corner, overlooking the harbour. With the trees hanging over and providing shade, it was otherwise a brilliantly sunny day with clear blue skies and glittering water. Gorgeous. Service was OK – I don’t know how else to describe it. It wasn’t particularly friendly, nor was it really bad. Our waitress seemed like she had difficulty smiling, however she did oblige all our requests promptly. I guess it could be worse πŸ˜‰

The food though. WOW. Mum and Dad reckon it’s the best they’ve had in Sydney – over our recent trips to Bai Yok and Nilgiri’s. Thai-style, the ingredients used are fresh and exquisite. The cooking is perfection – all the flavours blended beautifully and you honestly do get what you pay for because frankly, you won’t find food this quality in Chinatown.

Dad randomly chose some wine, Grant Burge 2006 Moscato, based on the waitress’ not-very-helpful information of “sweet” when he asked what kind of white wine it was. He chooses randomly very well – BEST WINE EVER!!!!! By far and away the best wine I’ve ever drunk – which is saying a lot since I’m not a huge wine fan. The wine was more like a sweet drink – light, refreshing and with a very mild/faint after taste. Absolutely fantastic especially since it was all chilled and bubbly. Mmm… ahhhh… we’re going to try and hunt more down and buy bottles of the stuff πŸ˜›

Main was a Red Curry of Fish with Siamese Watercress, which was spectacular. It came in a medium-sized bowl, but what was impressive was the fish. The sheer amount of it was staggering, I’ve never eaten in a restaurant that had THAT much fish in a dish before! Very very generous. The watercress was also a lovely accompaniment, silky and smooth with little taste to detract from the sweet flavour of fish. The curry was not-too-spicy and had little/no coconut cream either, so it was healthy.

Other main was Deep Fried Marinated Pork with Seasoned Rice and Chilli & Ginger Sauce. It didn’t look particularly exciting when served, but the pork absolutely exploded with flavour once popped into the mouth. Cut into slim morsels, the pork was perfectly marinated and grilled to give it that delicious smoky smell. The sauce was a mixture of chilli, ginger, fish sauce and other stuff that we couldn’t identify. It lent a great contrast of multiple flavours to the pork – so delightful! And the rice… mmmm… it was slightly sticky and had the rich flavour of stock and garlic.

An absolutely delightful lunch. It was really hard pulling myself away and back to work after that!

the brown brothers moscato is a nice wine to try, easy on the pocket too. if you like sweet wines, you should check out the late harvest wines or dessert (noble rot) wines. asti spumante is also nice, tt’s a light sweet bubbly.

traminer riesling and geweurtraminer wines also tend to be fruity but perhaps not aws sweet

lorikeets!!!!! so cute!

I just bought that one about an hour ago, heheh!! I hope it’ll be just as nice as the one I had πŸ™‚ Thanks for all the tips, I’m going to keep an eye out for those wines, hopefully they’re easy to find

I’m not a wine fan either but I love Moscato. So light, sweet and refreshing! For one that’s easily available at liquor stores, try Brown Brothers (under $20).

I wish I’d discovered Moscata earlier.. I really love it! And thanks for the tip, I got Brown Brothers just abt an hr ago.. hope I like it too πŸ™‚

If you liked the Moscato, you’ll like several others. Hunt down New Zealand’s Gisborne Reserve Gewertztraminer – must be the reserve selection. For best moscato, find a bottle shop that stocks italian stuff, and ask for Moscato d’Asti (moscato from the Asti region). Around 5% alcohol (just like a beer), it’s an upgrade on Verdi in terms of taste sensations. Also on a heavier note try Morris Liquer Muscat, or De Bortoli’s Noble One, so nice! Sigh! I remember the days in the bottle shops as a casual on Norton St, boy did we have fun there!

Re: Wine

Wow you know a lot! I must live under a rock.. bleh.. didn’t even know Muscato existed, how annoying.
Where do you think I can find those wines you suggested? I was at Liquorland but could only find Brown Brothers and Nova, so I bought both! hope they’re nice..

Re: Wine

Ok, proper Italian Moscato d’Asti, go to Lucchitti Brothers, it’s a Deli and Liquor Store, 190 Norton St, Leichhardt (waaaay down Norton St). I worked for old man Lucchitti’s brother (and the brother’s son) in a different shop on Norton St (no longer there, bought out by Woolies and turned into a rubbish wine shop), but these guys are the real deal. Ask them for Moscato d’Asti, they should have a few to choose from. Scanavino was a very good brand, see if they have been re-imported into the country, if not go with what they reccommend. Others to try in the same vein (which they MUST have) would be Riccadonna and Verdi, but they are both so “common”.

For other sweets you can get at LiquorLand, ask for Lindermans Porphyry Saturnes (think that is the spelling, it’s a wierd one). McGuigans has a Late Harvest that is not as sweet, but ok-ish. I only really like the Italian Moscatos, but then I am biased – having worked in one of the best Italian bottegas for a few years does it to you. Morris Liqueur Muscat or other Morris Liqueurs (good port too!) should be readily available in Vintage Cellars or other similar class bottle shops (1 step up from LiquorLand). Likewise with the De Bortoli Noble One, or try 3 Bridges Bortrytis Semillon (or other Bortrytis Semillon from other wineries). These are sweeter and usually also grouped under “Dessert Wines”. Brown Brothers also produce an Orange Muscat, which is really nice.

Gewurztraminers, or Traminer Rieslings, on a whole has a whole lot of sweet and not much fragrance. Just remembered I think Wyndham Estate has a TR2 white that’s sweet. Gisborne’s Reserve Gewurztraminer was my choice for a very well-made sweet table wine. They don’t bring in much, as I understand it, and no one could tell me where to go look. It’s like $30+ a bottle but worth every drop. You need to talk to some of the better bottle shops in the city who stock Gisborne products (from New Zealand) and ask them, they might be able to do something – after all, they order wines weekly!

Hope that helps you out a bit, my wine knowledge is a bit out of date since stopping work at bottle shops, but I’ve listed mostly “old warhorse” products that have been around for a while. Grin!

Re: Wine

Oh maan, I won’t be able to get myself to Leichhardt easily *cries*. I’m pretty much bound in the city cos I don’t have a car!

I did see Lindeman at Liquor Land and was eyeing that one too. Tried the Brown Brothers and it was really nice, maybe too nice as we drank the whole thing in about 10 mins πŸ˜‰ Do you know of a good wine store in the City that might stock these great wines you mentioned? Thanks for all your help too!

Re: Wine

The Oak Barrel, 152 Elizabeth St has the Morris products.

Australian Wine Emporium, 100 Cumberland St The Rocks has De Bortoli’s Noble One.

GPO Cellar, at the GPO at Martin Place should be a good place to visit.

Porter’s Liquor, 382 Pitt St should have more regular selections, possibly the Lindermans or McGuigans and Verdi as a bare minimum. Not as tasty compared to the rest, but it’s a start …

Oh, and most of these should be serve chilled (except the Morris), so much nicer!
