I’ve been to Ramen Kan umpteen times, and I’m still not sick of the place. Located in both Chatswood and in Chinatown, I have to say I prefer the Chinatown branch as it feels more Japanese on the inside and because it’s tucked away – you enter a tiny doorway and in a squashy old elevator to go up to the cosy restaurant. It feels exclusive π Don’t think that since it’s so hidden, it’ll be empty. It’s PACKED! I’ve never seen the place half-empty, ever.. it’s always filled to the brim with Japanese and Asians chowing down on big portions of rice or noodle dishes.
I went with a friend in the evening on Easter Monday and it was also packed, to my surprise. But since we chose to sit at the walls on bar stools, we could be seated immediately. If not, expect to wait just outside the lift, squished in with 10 other people also waiting for a table. We ordered and the food came quickly, which was a relief since I was starving! I got the Half-Sashimi, Half-Grilled Salmon on Rice with Salad and Miso Soup (I forgot the actual name) which was half-sashimi, half-grilled salmon. How clever!! The delicate salmon slices were very quickly and lightly grilled so they were ever-so-slightly charred on the outside yet still raw and smooth on the inside. The salmon was creamy and had the most delicious flavour. I wish more Japanese restaurants would do them in this half-and-half style, it’s absolutely fantastic. The salad it came with was small, but was refreshing and light. And the miso soup wasn’t too salty, to my relief (as most are). Also had a Calpis with it – a popular Japanese soda. It’s not as fizzy as coke and is like a milky-coloured 7-UP. One of my fave fizzy drinks :)~

After our meal, we adjourned downstairs to Cold Rock for dessert. It’s my favourite ice cream place as you can “make your own”. You have what seems like an infinite number of choices to select from, but since I’m boring I went with my usual: Cheesecake ice cream with Brownies. Sounds a bit odd but the sweet brownie contrasts beautifully with the slightly tangy cheesecake ice cream. Delicious :)~

I love combining toppings into ice cream. In Edmonton, we have Marble Slab Creamery. Same concept and your post is making me crave it.
Me too, I’m not a huge fan of ‘normal’ ice cream anymore π
The Chinatown branch is definitely much better than the Chatswood one. It’s more of a Cafe feel at Chatswood. So, now I have a destination for today’s lunch…
I agree! Even the quality and menu selection is better in Chinatown – I think it’s the original branch so that’s why…
Bar Stools in Restarurants
Its great when restaurants have bar stools at tall tables. That is probably my favorite way to be seated at restaurants! I don’t really care for booths.
Re: Bar Stools in Restarurants
I like ’em cos they’re like novelty π

Aww! Those look really awesome!
Calpis is actually a Vitamin-C drink so I’m quite surprised that you enjoy it!
WOW really?? But it tastes just like a soft drink and not medicine-y at all?!
I spy Calpis! That name has always made me laugh. The yakisoba looks good… I was afraid to try it at this one festival we went to in Satte last week. I’m such a wimp when it comes to food.
There’s a pint of ColdStone’s cheesecake with Oreos in my freezer. π
Yeah.. Chris once said and and his sis said “Huh? COW PISS?!!” hahahhahaha
the icecream place has the same concept as ColdStone Creamery! and a dubiously similar name too! *grins*
Ya I think this Aussie one copied! π
*grins* im not complaining! anything that brings good food to us!

The food’s making me drool. YUM! :P~
i love Jap food, and they do it so well here!
Japanese food always look so presentable and yummy! Among all kind of noodles i love udon and rice noodle the best π
I don’t like udon as much, I find it all strange and chewy π My fave is soba and ramen, mmmmm!
Me too, Jap’s one of my fave food :)~ The place just has Japanese and Asians, so I take that as a good sign π
