Mum wanted me to check out this great Cantonese porridge (aka rice congee) place, so we hopped on over to Ah Chiang’s Porridge. It’s very no frills – outdoors, hot and hurried. But people still flock there in the droves because of the sheer quality of their food. The porridge is creamy and thick, without being too gluggy. It’s served steaming hot and tasty, with bits of pork mince and a raw egg cracked at the bottom, which you stir through the porridge and mix it up (it makes it a bit sweet).

It was delish with some raw sliced fish that you stir into the porridge and it cooks, since the fish is sliced so thinly. Mmmm! Plus, you can buy a dough fritter/”yiu tiao” for just $0.60 and it comes chopped up so you can dip it into the porridge. Considering how cheap the prices are, it’s no wonder people keep coming back!

Ahh so true, sydney doesn’t really have kueh. But the best I’ve had is Alice’s at Thornleigh, she’s just about the only one that does it properly!

Hmm, I’ve never tried congee with the egg at the bottom. Will have to do it sometime. πŸ™‚ I love the congee from Superbowl back in Sydney!

Yeah you just crack a raw egg in, then stir it through.. it makes it all creamy and sweet and luscious :)~
Superbowl is great!!

My mum tried it sashimi style but she said it wasn’t that tasty, so we stirred it into the porridge instead πŸ˜›
