FOOD, Food reviews, Uncategorized YOUNG ALFRED, LINDT CAFE, PUFFY, CHINESE NOODLE HOUSE 23 September 2006

Just installed the new Windows Vista on the home computer. It’s so insanely sexy and sleek. I LOVE IT!

In other news, having a quiet night in as Chris and I had a busy day in the City today. The lucky boy got a Myer $200 gift card from work, so we went looking for a pair of Oakley sunnies for him. Unfortunately, Myer no longer stock them! Boo! So it’s either just Raybans or to use the $$ towards Coles groceries.

I’ve been wanting to pay another visit to Young Alfred with Chris, since he’d never been then and I consider them to make the best pizzas. It’s crowded, but not as packed as it normally is on weekdays with the office crowd. We scored a lovely table on the verandah, in the warm afternoon sun. Bliss!

Decided on the TNT pizza (salami, red onion, roast capsicum, bacon and chilli) to share, which would make it a light lunch and leave us with room for dessert afterwards. The pizza was lovely, but as flat-out-amazing as the previous ones I’ve had there. The base was still perfection – all crisp and thin. However, I think I wasn’t too fussed with the topping because it was pretty ‘normal’, as in, I could make it myself. At almost $20 for the pizza, I’d prefer some unique/unusual ingredients.

Washed down with an ice-cold James Boags beer.. and finished off with a Cafe Latte, which was made superbly. Just a nice, simple afternoon lunch, sunning ourselves outside and having a good chat πŸ™‚

After our sunny lunch, we took a stroll down to the Lindt Cafe for our dessert. Had their Waffle with vanilla bean ice cream and liquid chocolate, again! Just can’t get enough of it πŸ˜‰ The warm liquid chocolate drizzled on top makes it totally spectacular, and the vanilla bean ice cream is rich and creamy… mmmmm. Also had the Dark Hot Chocolate which made 2 full cups, so we were both satisfied.

Ended up buying a couple of Lindt balls to take home – cookies & cream, coffee, orange, peanut butter, raspberry, mint, etc.. they’re delish πŸ™‚

After a bit of shopping in the City, we had a quick/light tea-time at Puffy. Chris was keen to check it out and compare it to Beard Papa @ Chatswood. His opinion? “The vanilla custard is a little thinner than Beard Papa’s. The ‘cookie’ part is similar to Gaytime ice cream’s”. The food connoisseur has spoken.

I hadn’t been to Chinese Noodle House in over a year, and was keen for a re-visit.. especially after quite a few friends kept recommending it. So after our Puffy, we walked over to Chinatown where there was already a queue outside! The place is typically cramped, noisy and pretty dirty – the floor was littered with scraps and tables weren’t the cleanest. Pretty much hawker-style atmosphere. I suppose it all adds to the experience, and their food is so worth it!!

We placed our orders whilst still queueing outside, oddly enough. Once seated, I peered into the glass-walled kitchen and saw the noodle-chef (complete with shower cap on his head, haha!) pulling the hand-made noodles. Very cool. Our food arrived at lightning speed and were cleared equally as eagerly – the entire point of the place is to get diners in and out ASAP πŸ˜‰

Selected the Home-made noodles with mince pork and cucumber. A perfect choice since it was FANTASTIC!! The noodles were just slightly chewy and had a lovely smooth texture. The mince pork was super flavourful and was off-set by the cool crisp cucumber slices. Totally divine. Went beautifully with the hot Chinese tea, which was complimentary (woo!).

Also asked for “Xiao Long Bao” but somehow got Steamed Pork Buns instead. They were very strange – almost exactly like a Xiao Long Bao.. but instead of the really thin, delicate skin.. it was a bun! So we deemed it “only okay”, since we MUCH prefer proper Xiao Long Bao. All up, in and out within 20 mins max. Like a crazy food production line – great to run in, eat yourself silly on great cheap food, then run out.

And all that was just today’s food. One word: SATISFYING :)~

Ya!! I really like ’em. In the pic I took earlier they look purple which is weird, as they don’t seem purple at all when I have them on! Thank goodness πŸ˜‰

wow! that’s a lot of yummy food in a day! I wish I could eat that much, but I put on weight really easily. haha.

and you’re looking good babe! πŸ™‚

Me too, I’m trying to eat less.. but obviously it doesn’t really seem to work most of the time πŸ˜› Nevermind, this week I’ll be good!

I wish I could have a nice, relaxing foodie’s day like that!
Unfortunately uni (i.e. needing to study and lack of earning a lot of money) makes it quite difficult! Also a lack of sufficiently foodie friends with similar tastes as mine! (I like experimenting and trying new things, a lot of people I’m friends with like the old traditional stuff… I’ve learnt to compromise and just try ONE new thing at a time…)

Also: my parents make steamed pork buns like that! Sometimes if it doesnt’ say steamed BBQ pork buns, that’s what they mean! They have those in Shanghai, and my grandma used to buy them (they’re like less than 1 yuan each! That’s less than 20 cents!) and bring them home for breakfast! Mmm… πŸ™‚ They also have vegetable ones, which are just as delicious (although I didn’t think so when I a was a young carnivore! πŸ˜› )

Although I love all types of foods (as long as it’s made well) Asian food is DEFINITELY my favourite!

I know what you mean about a lack of foodie friends.. Chris is really the only one that TRULY loves ‘sourcing’ out good food πŸ˜› I need to find greedy friends, haha!

The buns were more $$ than 1 yuan, damn, hehe. They were nice, but I still def prefer Xiao Long Bao!

I tried out Vista RC1 and was pretty disappointed by it. It seems like a prettier (and buggier) version of XP. I realise there are probably improvements in terms of security that will have a positive effect in the long term, but immediately after release there will almost certainly be a higher rate of exploits than XP is seeing right now.

My current recommendation in terms of operating systems is Ubuntu. It’s free, easy to use, does what most people want, and currently doesn’t have any security concerns since all viruses/spyware target Windows.

Really? that’s a bummer, it’s been 100% for me so far thank goodness, so I’m happier with it. Plus it’s all swish, and I like my aesthetics πŸ˜‰

My GeForce 4 got rated “2” (out of 5) and when Aero was turned on, dragging a window around was pretty laggy. GeForce 4 cards are fairly old, but I’d expect a GUI to not be that much of a burden on the video card.

Control panel crashes when trying to add a user. Videos flicker while playing.

UAC seems like a really good feature, although a lot of users seem to hate it.

Wow, I can’t believe that post was just about one day. You always have the most relaxing and productive weekends. You look chicly bored in picture where you’re wearing your Enjoy shirt. You’ve been obsessed about the Lindt concept store!

Wow, you ate so many different things today! πŸ˜›

I went to the noodle house once with some friends and you’re right, the noodles are very very nice. We didn’t go back though because the place is just so cramped and the waitresses were rather rude in ‘chasing’ us out. As soon as we had finished eating, they immediately came to clear up the table. Didn’t like the experience so though the food is great, we never went back again.

It was a great foodie day πŸ˜›

I agree that they’re SO keen to chase people out, it’s quite strange. But they were still really friendly and kept saying “thank you” when we were walking out. I’d consider it like McDonalds – in and out, with not much customer service!

I don’t really have any problem with them rushing people out once they’ve finished eating. It’s understandable – there’s usually quite a few people waiting to get in.

It’s definitely not the place to go for a slow, romantic meal. πŸ™‚

Yeah I know. We were out having supper and were looking for a place where we could sit and talk. I guess we chose the wrong place. Would be ideal for a quick lunch though!

Oh, you never know… I was grabbing some dinner there before heading home from uni one evening and they crammed me in sitting across from an American physicist who had been sent to Australia by the uni he works for to use the Parkes dish. (if I remember correctly…)

We had a great friendly conversation which I wouldn’t have had if they didn’t cram us in sharing a table together! πŸ™‚

Hehe..well, that’s for strangers. Can’t really linger there and talk if you’re with a group of friends πŸ™‚

There’s a restaurant in Kensington along Anzac Parade that serves great Beijing cuisine. It’s in a hotel but I can’t remember the name right now. Kensington Inn?

YES I’ve been there! They have handmade noodles too.. I made a post and posted pics a few months ago about it.

They’re just as good :)~
