After the Asics 8km Diabetes Charity Walk, we hopped into the car and I thought we were driving back across the bridge. I dozed off, and when I walk up, I was totally disorientated and said “Where are we!?”, to his response “Oh, I’m kidnapping you” Hrmmm. Turns out he’d decided to go to the area around our University to eat – along Anzac Parade. What a smart guy 😀

I was keen to try out Chinese Dumpling & Noodle House, which the lovely recommended just a few days ago. The place is really quite a typical Asian food joint along Anzac Parade – cheap looking, and priced accordingly so. And you know what? It’s often these sort of places that have the BEST food. We decided on a light lunch as we’d eaten all the free food/fruit at the Asics event, so we just ordered 2 dishes – a grand total of AU$13 and free Chinese tea to boot. Woo hoo!! The food didn’t take long to come out, and the service was excellent – really polite and friendly.

We instantly chose the Xiao Long Bao (steamed dumplings with minced pork and soup inside). Xiao Long Bao is always a winner with us – I love how the soup inside each dumpling is just pure liquified fat.. it sounds gross but it’s oh-so-delicious!! The verdict? I thought they were good, done correctly and all that.. but not spectacular. The ‘skin’ was a bit thick and chewy, the insides though were pure heaven. I guess I compare to the Xiao Long Baos we get in Singapore – really thin and delicate skins and just pure luxury inside and out. Chris loved ’em though, and they’re as good as we’ve had in Australia.

I was keen on a hand-made noodle dish, which was their specialty. Finally decided on Hand-made noodles with minced pork and bean sauce. When it came, we kinda stared at it, as it looked a bit odd 😛 Fat thick noodles (kinda like Japanese udon, but not uniform in shape or size), and a dollop of mince and shreaded cucumber. So weird!! But mixed all together and eaten… it was sublime. VERY VERY VERY GOOD hand-made noodles!!!! They’re the perfect amount of chewiness and texture, and the sauce was just wonderful. Really good :)~

Kingsford Chinese is our all-time favourite foodie place. We have a lot of ‘history’ with it, so it’s not just the food that appeals to us. It’s where we met.. back when we were living in College and had our dates at Kingsford chinese. It was our “special date place”, as it was one grade up in pricing from McDonalds – haha! We went there so often and Chris always ordered the dishes in their Chinese names, that the owners now recognise us 😛 The ambience is crappy, a la typical Anzac Parade style. But it’s lifely, full of food-loving Asians.. and THEIR FOOD IS FRIGGIN’ AMAZING, so that’s all that matters.

Got takeaway to eat at home for dinner tonight, old favourites of course! “Sang Chao ngao yok fan” (aka fried rice with beef & egg) is a total staple – it is the best fried rice ever. Full of flavour and the mince beef in it is just divine, plus lots and lots of egg through the rice. It’s really divine, pretty much the ONLY time we order fried rice outside..

Also got Beef Steak with honey black pepper sauce. Normally, I don’t like beef dishes, as they tend to be tough or not very nice in general. But Kingsford Chinese’s version is always a winner – it’s super soft and the onions have the most gorgeous flavour. And the sauce is totally not like other “honey black pepper” sauces you’ll find in other restaurants. It’s really perfect 🙂

Sang Tung Chicken is also always a winner, which is pretty obvious from the fact that almost every table there has the dish sitting on it. It’s got a crisp skin and the chicken is really moist and soft, and the sauce doesn’t veer to the sour side, but is spot-on and full of flavour. Yum!!
