RATING:

Avalon labels itself a “wood grill and wine bar” and is a mere walk from our place, yet we hadn’t visited since they opened, thinking they were quite far away (no idea why). It’s owned by the very friendly Howard Quan and the head chef is Hilary Ambrose Jr (from Jean George’s Spice Kitchen in New York), and is situated in a sunlit dining room on the 2nd floor.

Around 8-10 of us gathered here for a relaxed weekend brunch, to take advantage of their 78? for two-courses and 98? for three-courses special. There’s a very decent selection available to suit all tastes, though we did lament the omission of a decadant dessert like a molten chocolate cake or a rich and creamy tiramisu. What can we say? We’re dessert-aholics!

The menu and cooking style of the dishes has a very Australian touch to me, though the restaurant would be classified as just Western food. All the dishes came out thoughtfully arranged and though portions were on the smaller side (our group have big appetites!), we were still satisfied. I need to call out their coffees – I had the iced latte which was just fantastic πŸ™‚

Avalon is a lovely nook of a restaurant for a relaxed brunch, or for a refined dinner date. We’ll be back to try their Lobster promotion (see their website for info)!

The sun-lit interior of Avalon

Fabulous iced latte

Green Salad – it came in a giant dish but was actually fairly small

Tomato Salad – this was mine. Fresh, simple, delicious!

Char-grilled beef satay – this was probably the best value appetizer of the set

24hr Cooked Pork Belly Sandwich – the pork got raves all round,
but needed more of it to off-set the bread

Grilled Qingdao Tenderloin

It had a bit of a ‘ham texture’ that not everyone liked, but I thought it was fab!

Grilled Snapper Fillet – a small portion, but lovely and fresh. I enjoyed the
Passionfruit sauce and fresh parsley and coriander

Coconut Soup, Strawberry Sorbet – so pretty!

Orange Creme Brulee Espuma – so fluffy and light. Loved the crisp sugar bits!
