getting ice cream from foreign places like haagen dasz etc is ridiculous. i only did cos i had some vouchers for it, it wasnt even that good but so crazy expensive!
you can buy magnums in convenience stores (look for the colour signs that say 24 and then some characters after it – im sure youve seen all the Alldays, lawsons, cstore etc around) which are pretty good and cheap (around $1AUD each) as well as cornettos and some other random brands.

havent gotten to your more recent posts yet (long backlog to read after no lj for a few months!) but shanghai is generally not cheap compared to the rest of china. shanghai, beijing and shenzhen are quite pricey places. if you want cheaper food you will have to eat at local places. a lot are actually quite nice and clean if you eat chinese food. but there are so many different styles of chinese food (eg sichuan, cantonese etc) that its easy to eat it all the time! also the bund is very expensive as an area, its better to go to a more local area!

i recommend carrefour as a supermarket. its not so expensive but has a lot of things that you probably miss from home, as well as a lot of chinese items. if you google them you should be able to find their locations in shanghai and pick the one closest to you!

Safe to say we won’t really be eating ice cream or drinking coffee when we’re there πŸ˜› At least those ‘instant’ ice creams are so cheap.. good to hear, heh

We’ll live around People’s Square area I think, so fingers crossed there’s a carrefour! πŸ™‚

fresh meat moon cake? hmmm…looks interesting

the markets are fun to go to. lotsa cheap stuff but bargain like mad.

are you gonna take up mandarin lessons? u probably don’t need it at work but it will help heaps outside.

Yeah , the markets are a blast.. and the stuff is so gorgeous and awesome quality

We’re both getting a tutor, eBay’s organising it ‘cos I think they realise the value of me being able to speak the language πŸ˜‰

I don’t know where you are getting your ice cream from, but I find that ice cream in China is generally ridiculously cheap. If you are going to a nice cafe/tea place it might be a bit on the expensive side but from general convenience stores or side street stalls they are ridiculously cheap for ridiculous portions… MASSIVE.

Ohhhhh yeah we didn’t see any side street stalls selling ice cream πŸ™ But we were at Haagen Daaz and it was almost $10/scoop! Arghhh

Are you guys enjoying Shanghai so far? I would love to visit one day. Late night shopping is always fun and that’s a huge fruit stand! *^^*

congrats on your big move! (im sure many more exciting news to come!)

something else to add to your ‘cheap’ list! tailoring!! if you have dresses you like, take it there and pick any fabric they make exact replicas at a fraction of its cost! πŸ™‚

happy birthday babe! πŸ™‚

I did hear that!! I just need to find a really good (ie. no sloppy hems or dodgy jobs) tailor that is actually cheap.. the ones we saw were WAAAY more $$ than Australia!

Too cool. You should just get on the train, count the number of stops and get off after 3, 5 or 7 stops and then look around awhile and take a train back the exact amount of stops and you’ll have seen a new neighborhood. Chances are the outer areas of the city have much cheaper restaurants and more emphasis on everyday stores than on fancy ones. But it looks very awesome. You will certainly have plenty of exploring possible in your first year there.

Very true – we’re defnitely going to talk to people there and get their suggestions as well so we don’t get stuck in all the touristy places
