FASHION, FOOD, Food reviews, Uncategorized MU KUNG HWA KOREAN 10 June 2007

Watched Shrek 3 yesterday – and incredibly, I actually thought it was better than Shrek 1 and 2! The jokes and humour were right up my alley and I actually laughed out loud in the cinema – something I NEVER do, not even in comedies. Totally loved it. Favourite parts? To name a few, the bit where Gingerbread Man did a pool (was it a gum drop or something?) and when Price Charming flicked his hair a la shampoo commercial style. Ha ha! Anyway, I watched it with Chris and his brother but they weren’t being very exciting and it was a bit weird, so I left and went out with friends instead πŸ˜›

They’re having big sales on in the City and Rebel Sport had tons on clearance. Wheeee!! Picked up a cute Nike sports top for the gym, in the prettiest aqua colour. I’ve been going to the gym quite a bit since signing up (go me!) and only do my washing every 2 weeks, so I’ve been having to wear my gym clothes again when they’re dirty and smelly. Ewww! This new top is definitely welcome. Also found a pair of Boxing Gloves that were $79.99 down to $25. COOL. Best of all, they’re PINK… need I really say more??

Nike sports top

Boxing gloves: bad ass.

Dinner was in Glebe, an area that I never go to. It’s actually a foodie’s paradise there.. lots of restaurants line both sides of the road and it’s just bustling with diners at night. We headed to Mu Kung Hwa which the waitress translated for me into English, but I can’t remember what it meant, arghhh!! But it had “flower” in the name, that’s all I remember. It was a Korean restaurant, and I very rarely find/eat Korean food.. so I was very eager to try everything out πŸ˜›

The service is unbelievably wonderful. Our waitress had a perpetual cheery smile on her face and when I dropped my chopsticks (stupid me), she promptly came round with another pair with a smile, mere seconds later, when I hadn’t even asked for another pair. She was also very helpful and even tried to discourage us from ordering the whopping big Seafood Pancake, saying that it might be too much food. Little did she realise that we can eat. A LOT. Ha ha! πŸ˜€ True to her word though, the Seafood Pancake was whopper-sized and really thick, probably enough to have been ordered alone with nothing else πŸ˜‰ It came stuffed full with seafood, chives, and the pancake itself was a mix of flour and egg. Totally heartwarming and satisfying for winter.

Was also delighted with all the little appetizers – all complimentary! Avoided the strange Chives, but the Marinated Potatoes were enough to make me go bananas over. The traditional Kimchi was a bit too spicy for me though. And the last dish, the Egg Omelette was nice, but didn’t find it too interesting since we already had whopping big Pancake to contend with, haha.

Another main was the Tofu Soup, which isn’t really a soup.. but more like a piping hot tofu stew. Similar to the Chinese “ma po tofu”, but less spicy and comes in a rich gravy. It was so so so delicious mixed into white rice! Ahhhh… comfort food.

My favourite dish was the Sizzling BBQ Beef, done Korean style. It was…. mind bogglingly good. Nearly blew my brains out. Haha! The beef was ultra tender and the flavour was utterly perfect – slightly sweet but still with the lovely beefy smell and very very tasty. I normally never order beef because I’m scared that it won’t be done well/tender, but this has converted me. Must find a Korean place that does this in the City!

OMG! i thought the gingerbread pooping part was hilarious too!! i thought i was the only odd one and had to smother my giggles after that!!

here’s to a crazy sense of humor! *high-five*

Hehe well I must have the same weird sense of humour for sure, HA HA! I loved the movie, wanna watch it agai:)

This is what a mukunghwa looks like:

The mukunghwa is South Korea’s national flower, and the name means “eternal flower”.

That tofu soup you had was Soon Dubu. In the many little Korean enclaves in the States, there are many restaraunts that are just Soon Dubu houses. They have all different flavored Soon Dubus like seafood, pork, mushroom, etc. And you can choose different levels of spiciness. Sometimes, the menu lists the levels of spiciness as red, orange, yellow, and white…to kind of correspond to the color of the Soon Dubu (if your Soon Dubu is glowing red, it’s gonna be SPICEY!). Also, when they bring it to your table, they also bring you a few cold eggs. The Soon Dubu is always served boiling bubbling hot…you’re supposed to crack an egg open into your Soon Dubu which cools it down a little, and also the hot hot hotness of the Soon Dubu cooks the cold raw egg…so you get sort of a little egg drop soup action going in there too. It’s yummy.

Random: My grandmother used to put 7-Up and Pepsi cola in her secret bulgogi/galbi marinades.

Ohhh I had no idea, I thought it was just the restaurant name!

That Soon Dubu was fantastic, and i love how it’s healthy too. Ours didn’t come with egg though I would have loved that!

ooh spicy tofu soup aka soon do bu. my absolute fave thing to eat in korean restaurants!

gah…now u got me gagging for korean

That soup was REALLY good, esp since it was cold and wet outside. All I need is that and rice and it makes a satisfying meal :)~

Chives are actually really good! Make your breath stinky though… :o)
I’m sad that Canberra has very few Korean places… Although we do have a couple of Japanese places that are actually owned by Korean people! Don’t know why they don’t open up Korean places instead!!!

We don’t have many Korean places here either! At least I don’t really see many in my immediate area πŸ™

Heee, I’ve got Fenech gloves too…they’re purple! That was the buying point for me πŸ™‚

Mu Kung Hwa looks excellent! The complimentary appetizers look fab too.

It was the 1st time I’ve had it, believe it or not. I thought it’d be like the Jap egg omelette version so was really surprised when it was SO different!
