At Chatswood over the long-weekend, we noticed with delight that a new restaurant had opened in the Mandarin Centre.. a funky looking Japanese one that was packed to the brim with people. Naturally, we had to try it out π One look at the menu and it’s evident that they serve authentic Japanese food, plus all the customers were Asian/Japanese, which was promising. The prices aren’t cheap, but they’re not super pricey either – it’s fairly priced for Japanese food in Australia.
We eagerly pored over the menu before finally selecting our 3 dishes. We were going to have a 4th – crumbed deep-fried oysters.. but they were sold out π After ordering, we happily sat back to await our food. And waited. And waited. And waited. Nearly one hour later, the food still hadn’t arrived. In fact, many tables that came WAY after us had all been served. We got pretty fidgety and annoyed. Especially me – my pet peeve is being kept waiting for my food. My max is 15 mins before I get reaaaaally tetchy. I like instant gratification when it comes to food π
After griping at the waitress (who just gave a vague “it’s coming” then scuttled off), I got up to speak with the guy at the front desk, presumably the cashier. He wasn’t very pleasant and after hearing my woes about waiting an hour, he turned around and served another customer who was paying and then the next customer, promptly ignoring me. So I just barged forward and said loudly “So are you looking into this, or what am I waiting here for? HRMMMMM???” and he did the shifty-eye and said “Errr yes it’s coming”. Grumpy, I went back to the table to sit down.
5 mins later, the food came. Hurray!!! But I was angry so I guess the food was probably incredibly awesome, but I only found it “nice” because I was biased. That’s all I’ll say cos now I can’t be bothered describing the food π And since I live in the City now, it’s unlikely I’ll ever go back. Then again, I’ll be back in the area this Saturday to do a last clean-up of my old apartment, so perhaps I’ll try them again.. this time they’d better not take their own sweet time to cook the food!!

Oh my, the food looks so delicious!
I believe, if you’re not particularly hungry and are just hanging out with your friends, 1-hour waiting time can be quite acceptable to eat something like this! However, 1-hour is just too long when you simply want to have lunch!

Try the Wagyu Beef Ribs (under Entrees) if you decide to go there again next time. I’ve been there 5 times already and haven’t had a problem with the delivery of food…a max of 15minutes…guess you were unlucky!
I find the lunch menus a lot more of a bargain…no where near as expensive as the dinner menu – yet the food options and sizes are roughly the same.
The cashier guy you were describing was actually from the original Sushi-Ya next to Artarmon Station….
I hope you have better luck next time
Ooooooo i did not even notice the ribs or I would’ve gotten them!! THey sound sooo good. I might be there Sat afternoon so will order the ribs then, and hopefully the oysters will be in stock, not like last time :X
I hate waiting ages for food too – very annoying!! From the photos though, it looks really good. sorry to hear about the crap slow service.
Hey, how come you are moving? why the city?
camel
Yeah I’m in the city now π it’s mostly all in Friends posts but basically decided it was better here!
Ah OK π

Hey, this is in my new neighbourhood. I’ll be sure to check it out -and get hard-core on their ass if the food takes forever to arrive!
Christine
Yes, do! I think we were just unlucky.. everyone else was happily eating. I’d go there at 12pm if I were you though, it gets totally PACKED afterwards!

I think good food sometimes takes time to prepare, but one hour is definitely far too long. I’m okay with half an hour as long as the food is good once it comes.
Yeah it was insane esp since my noodles don’t even require cooking – they’re just meant to be slapped on a plate and served cold.. so maybe it’ll take 1 min to arrange on a plate, max?!
wow.. one hour? i would have just walked off if i were you.. :p
on the other hand.. the food looks amazing! *drools over my desk*
i know! If I’d known it’ll really take that long we would’ve just gone outside and had something from the food court π
those are aussie lobsters! All tail…no claw…hmmm…tail….
We didn’t have the lobster though, didn’t feel like paying $$ π
i hope you tipped them horribly. That is rediculous. The longest anyone should have to wait to eat is 30 minutes…and only if they ordered their steak well done. :p
WEll fortunately in Australia we don’t really do tips.. so I’ll only tip if it’s a medium-to-fancy restaurant and their service is really good!
Most ridiculous was that my noodles took 45mins to arrive – and they’re actually cold noodles so they don’t even NEED to be cooked!

How do you eat soba?
Just dip it in the cold soy sauce that it comes with, and that’s it. Can’t believe you’ve never had soba?! It’s sooo good
Oh! I did have it but I didn’t know how to eat it. I poured the sauce over the noodles on the plate! SIlly me!
ouw.. that’s one awful service. i normally like the mandarin food court in chatswood. especially may’s malaysian and aroma’s indonesian food stalls. great food & price.. :)~
Yeah they were a bit blundering.. :X
May’s Malaysian is yum, I like their chicken rice!

Yeah that’s it, in the dodgier shopping centre π
And yeah, the Vietnamese corner place closed down π I liked their Pho!

yikes! hate places with baaaaad serving attitudes. ya guys should have got up and leave!
dont they know they word of mouth spreads faster than a virus?? π
We would’ve left, except we kept thinking the food would come in a minute and we were soooo hungry! :X
poor things!!
The food looks pretty good, but that long a wait is totally unreasonable! And ignoring a customer like that is just so crap, I hate it whent hat happens!
They weren’t particularly rude (esp the lady) but I think they just didn’t know what was going on so just tried to ignore it and hope I’ll go away! Blah!
Oh boy, waiting for more than an hour is just too much! *Anyone* would get irritated. :X
I think I have SG hawker-food mentality.. I want everything served within 5 mins, haha!
Looking back at everything i wrote, i think i might have written an essay on education and its significance.
i would be very peeved if i had to wait an hr! Thats why I will never go to Bills 2 i gave it 3 chances and they made me wait 3 times…never again.
I’ve been to bills a few times and didn’t have to wait long.. thank goodness or that would’ve stopped me from going back too!
