Frog Porridge
MacPherson Market
Singapore
$$—

For my last meal before I left Singapore, my uncle offered to take me to try frog porridge for the first time. 11 of us rocked up for brunch and ended up ordering and eating far more than we’d anticipated (as usual). It was fun though, and I was amazed that it was actually a WHOLE frog chopped up! I’m not a very adventurous person when it comes to food… I fear all sorts of weirdo type food – like frog πŸ˜‰ But curiosity took over and I agreed to it.

We created quite a commotion when my uncle saw the lady grabbing the frogs. He started yelling at me to come over, then my cousins started yelling, then people were looking at us, and I was running over with my camera… etc. *lol*! We were like crazy tourists. ANYWAY. So she grabbed one of the frogs, and under a running tap.. she used a pair of scissors to snip off it’s head. ALIVE. I was so gobsmacked, amazed and shocked that I completely forgot to take photos – or better – a video!! It was amazing, it’s legs were kicking as she snipped off it’s head. Then she skinned it and cooked it, which I didn’t get to see πŸ™

We ordered 6 frogs and fortunately they arrived less scary-looking. They were braised in dary soy, ginger and shallots and just looked like any other regular meat dish. Served with rice porridge – which was lush and sooo tasty. Anyway, back to the frog!! My uncle gave me a leg – all plump with meat at the thigh. It doesn’t look particularly weird or scary once it’s cooked.

Took a bite gingerly.. and it turned out to be far less freaky than I’d expected. It was pretty normal – the texture was inbetween fish and chicken, and the taste was a bit like fish. Very very smooth white meat, like super tender chicken. Plus the gravy it came with was really good.. so turns out the frog was actually quite yum :)~

I could only stomach the frogs legs though. Couldn’t deal with eating the body part – even though it was chopped up, it creeps me out when I have to suck around bone.. no matter what meat it is. But the frogs legs were good πŸ™‚

So that was that. I’m quite proud that I ventured outside my normal habits and tried something weird. Next time, I’m up for trying frogs legs in a French restaurant, I wonder if it’s much different?

Frog Porridge

I AM GOING TO EAT YOUUUUU

Chunk ‘o frog with rice porridge

Frog leg!

Bak Chor Mee

Some random fried stuff

Chee cheong fun

Pork Ribs

Siew Mai

Custard Tart

One last shot of some half-eaten frog

Afterwards, we popped by my Grandma’s house where my 2 little cousins tried out their culinary skills and made Potato Chips!. We peeled the potatos, then used the peeler to shave off slivers of the potato, then dropped them in hot oil. They turned out crisp and totally delicious :)~

Peeling the potato

Deep-Frying in oil

Deeeeelish!

G’bye Singapore!! See you again in just 7 weeks πŸ˜‰

“So she grabbed one of the frogs, and under a running tap.. she used a pair of scissors to snip off it’s head. ALIVE. I was so gobsmacked, amazed and shocked that I completely forgot to take photos – or better – a video!! ” -beeeeee.. it seems to be the book of horrors. Oh Beverly, you are so kind at you pictures. Do not believe your eyes!!!

I love trying new foods, but I’ve always had a hard time with it if I see my food alive first. Whenever we order steamed fish in the restaurants and the waiter brings the fish, still flopping in a net, to our table to have a look, I always have to look away. I’m so squeamish – bravo to you! Those frogs looked so cute, too!

Froggie

Ooh, I was reading about all your food adventures. This one really freaked me out. I can’t stand amphibians, and I usually eat all kinds of crap. You are really more adventurous than I thought! I had frog once without knowing and I nearly threw up after.

Re: Froggie

I’m a bit shocked I ate it actually, haha! But it tasted really nice, so I just made myself think that it’s just like eating a chicken cos they kill it etc too. Only thing is that killing a chicken seems more ‘normal’ in comparison..

OMG OMG!!!!!! I’m sorry, but after hearing about how they decapitate the frogs, I don’t think I could ever bring myself to eat frog porridge!!

Looking at the cooked amphibians made me queasy too. That’s it man, I must be the weirdest Asian ever.

I normally am so scared about eating anything weird too, but I wanted to be adventurous for a change, heheh. The meat IS really nice though!

omg that pic of all the frogs with their eyes wide open is seriously freaky!!!
i love frog porridge too, there’s one at the lavender foodcourt which is pretty good! and so is the famous geylang one… can try the next time u return πŸ˜€

I love frogs!! Sooo yummy! When I was little and lived in China, I used to bug my grandma to make me frog whenever she could πŸ™‚ The meat is just really juicy and tender πŸ™‚

I actually find real live frogs a bit scary though. Well, I find cane toads scary, and frogs look similar enough.

I normally have frog porridge like once or twice every winter and really find it tasty.

But then, after seeing that pic of frogs that you took, I did start to feel a bit disturbing [ goosebmups ]

Seriously …

::: shivers :::

Apparently they’re worse to chickens when they kill them, but I guess it’s gross to see any animal killed right in front of you before you eat it! No wonder people turn to vegeterianism πŸ˜‰

omg! so many green frogs! ahah they’re all staring at me.
you’re brave though, you saw them getting their heads chopped off and you still had the courage to eat it!

Hey!

Long time since i last commented πŸ˜›

So, you had a great time in Singapore ? πŸ˜›

I like frog leg too. My mum used to buy the live one from wet market and the seller would kill and even peel the skin right in front of us *lol*

Apparently, this stuff when brewed in soup, is very good for detoxing the body… and hence gives one great complexion. I had tons of these when i was down with chicken pox a few years back! πŸ˜›

Take care gal!

cheers,
keira πŸ™‚

Re: Hey!

Yeah SIngapore was fun, looking forward to being back in Feb!

I didn’t get to see her skin the frog, but I probably would if I could, just to freak myself out – heh!

hey i stay just behind that place! it’s more commonly known to cabbies as jackson kopitiam actually. nv tried the froggie porridge but i think i will next time! glad u tried the better stuff there, the bak chor mee and ngor hiang (aka some random fried stuff) are really gd!

The lady there was really nice, despite us screaming away and me taking photos of her killing the frogs. I think others would just scowl or tell me to go away, heh!

Wow, you are definitely more adventurous and daring than I am. I watched a show (think it was Planet Food) where they featured all kinds of weird food including the frog porridge in Singapore. I totally freaked out when I saw the frogs so never will I in a million years eat them!

I’m normally a big scaredy cat so I even consider lamb the ‘weirdest’ food I eat. was quite amazed I was game enough to eat the frog, haha! But it’s really like any other meat I guess..

oh my… eeee i think i wouldve been ok looking at the cooked frogs but the alive frogs eeeek!! so you went to singapore for holiday, coming back to aus, then going back to sg in feb?

Yeah once they’re cooked it’s like looking at a chicken wing or drumstick.. I guess we weren’t really *meant* to watch her kill ’em, heh!

Ya I’ll be back in SG end of feb, this time with Chris!

Yikes! Froggy goodness, they do look cute in that pic, I don’t think I could have watched either! But they do taste good. The best frog legs I had were salt and pepper ones…yum!

Yeah my cousins said it’s ok to eat, but watching them being killed is a bit much. Guess it’s the same watching any animal being killed!

omg! so many green frogs! ahah they’re all staring at me.

happy new year, bev!

i’ve had frog before, and i think it’s pretty good.
but i don’t know if i could eat it after seeing it killed. they just cut off the head while it’s still alive?? i wish i didn’t know that. poor frog!

Ya.. the poor thing is kicking away as she snips off it’s head. Quite fascinating in a totally amazing and scary kinda way :O

Frog Porridge! In cajun cooking they have fried frog legs which I have eaten, but I’ve never eaten a whole one. Kudos to you for being able to eat it.

i used to make potato chips like that too! yummy!
home made stuff are always the best.

and… i cant eat frog porridge! i cant stand the fact that i see it jumping in front of me a while ago, and now its in my bowl! *eek*

It was the 1st time I’ve made chips.. so cool πŸ˜›

It was definitely SO weird that the frog was live 5 secs ago, and the next I’m eating it.. haha!

Hey bev! Happy new year and glad you enjoyed yourself in Singapore. WHen i was younger, i saw a lady take out a live fish from the tank and while the fish is flapping around on the ground, she took out a stick and pounded the fish until the head until it died. Its like literally beating the living daylights out of the fish!

Wah I LOVE frogs! They’re super tasty! =9~
But those frogs look sooo cute in the pic! I feel bad for them haha.

It’s really scary the way they kill the frogs…

Yeah im kinda happy you didnt get a video either I might have given up on meat altogether…

but i mean yeah good on you for being adventurous!!

it creeps me out when I have to suck around bone
I’m like that too.. actually I can’t really eat anything that looks like it’s still an animal heh (like a whole chicken). There’s no way I could’ve eaten those frogs, but good on you for trying something weird and different! haha.

I think is one of the most disturbing posts you’ve ever written. I’m very, very, very happy that you didn’t get a video of a frog having the head snipped off.

*prepares for frog nightmares*
