Raffles
Singapore
Had a quick, simple lunch at Raffles Town Club this afternoon. We opted to sit at the Cafe outside by the pool and have some Asian fare. I decided on Singapore Hokkien Mee which was really lovely and came with lots of chunky seafood, in a thick gravy. Mmmm! Dad had Char Kway Teow but I was so busy eating mine, I forgot to try his π

Felt like some chicken rice for dinner, so we trooped off to Wee Nam Kee for dinner – they’re apparently famous in Singapore. Well, fame has obviously gone to their heads.. because the service was shocking beyond belief. Not a glimpse of a smile, and you were lucky not to get shouted or scowled at. Singapore’s customer service leaves much to be desired in general (especially when it comes to the hawker centres), but I don’t feel that’s an excuse. I have zero tolerance to shitty service so it’s quite annoying when I have to suck it up and live with it, all in the name of a full belly π
That aside, the food was good. The chicken rice was all hot and just nicely flavoured with ginger and garlic. I love mixing the dark soy provided into my rice along with a few spoonfuls of their steaming hot broth. Mmmmmm. The steamed chicken was ridiculously soft and tender, smooth in texture and went brilliantly with their chilli and ginger sauces. Also had some sambal kang kong which is quickly becoming my favourite cooked veg dish – must remember to try and cook it when I’m back in Australia. It looked really spicy, but it wasn’t that bad.. and it wasn’t too salty either. Just nice π

Since Hong Kong Cafe was right next door to Wee Nam Kee (above), we trooped over after dinner for our.. *ahem*.. next course π And THIS time, I remembered to take photos. Didn’t really get much though, just a drink and some dessert.. as we felt too full to get their fabulous Pork Ribs. Anyway, got the Deep Fried Toast with Peanut Butter – a total staple. It comes with a pat of butter that melts into the top of the toast, and a jug of syrup. The toast is lightly crisp on the outside and all fluffy on the inside with a smear of peanut butter – it’s a fantastic combination and a really satisfying dessert :)~
Had Sibu Tea and it was a disaster π When I had it the other day, it was just sweet enough and had a really mild, lovely flavour. Today’s was SO thick and utterly bitter and weird… like they gave a double-dose of the tea or something. Silly me did not think of sending it back and suffered through it… then felt sick aftewards π Dad had the Red Bean Mountain which was basically red beans blended with crushed ice, and topped with more red bean on top – he said it was yum!

I’ve been jealous of your entire trip – everything you eat looks so good.
SG just has really great food… a foodie’s paradise, haha!

If you like Hong Kong style toast, you gotta try the french toast at this place that serves HK style tea at Ngee Ann City. I think it’s called Imperial Treasures and is on the 5th floor. The french toast is thick and also deep fried, served with a big slab of butter and maple syrup. Soooo good with the HK milk tea. Their prawn paste fried chicken wings is also nice.
Ooo yum, is it better than HK Cafe’s version? I haven’t been to Ngee Ann yet.. hopefully over the next few days, want to check out all the boutiques π

It’s si-mud tea! Si-mud for silk stocking which is what they use to sieve out the tea.
Your dad and his love for red beans! Haha!
OOPS!! haha π
Ya my dad immediately chose that item and didn’t want anything else. And he slurped it up happily π
Sibu tea? Hmm…why is it called that? I am interested to find out π
Maybeit’s from Sibu? I have no idea π It’s kind of a thicker milkier version of normal tea.. it’s really nice when it’s done well :)~
OH haha, my cousin below says it’s “si-mud” tea, i called it wrong π
Oh I see…hehehehe!
That’s the first time I’ve seen deep-fried toast!
It sounds so strange, but it’s yum :)~
