About the pixels.. the reason why you can’t see much difference is because if the picture taken with a 4-5mp digicam is saved in a lower resolution than the maximum that the camera can handle.. you won’t notice it much, esp. if if it viewed on a computer.
It’s only if you print out the picture (esp. if it’s bigger than the standard 4×6″ / 10x15cm) that you will see the diff between your camera and your dad’s!
