Wow, that’s really expensive! My driving cource cost about RM500 here in Sarawak, Malaysia. The others are right, learning to drive auto is so much easier than learning to drive a manual car. Unfortunately, it’s compulsory for everyone to learn to drive a manual here. I still suck at it because of my poor coordination skills so I only ever drive auto cars unless it’s absolutely necessary that I drive a manual..ehhe..

Good luck with the lessons and exams and everything..I heard that it’s difficult to pass in Oz as my bro took the exam twice!

ooh driving is fun! i got my license in singapore so had to learn manual. but ever since then i’ve only driven manual car a couple times. my car in singapore is auto. hehe. i remember i was so excited about driving when i first got my license. i went for long drives every night from 1-2 am to like 4-5 am. Basically explored the whole of Singapore with this guy. lol! I even sent him to school every day and for his modelling shoots during the weekends. That was how fun driving was. But the thrill wears off after a while. I always pick up my friends and send them home coz they all stay really near. I dont really mind but it also means that when we go clubbing on the weekends I cant drink. I dont have a car here in Melbourne yet though, soon. In the meantime its a good thing Paul has a car and he either drives me around or lend me the car. πŸ™‚

Oh in SG You have to learn manual? There are hardly any manual cars there, weird! I love driving but yeah, if you end up driving friends around, do they help out with petrol??

yeah in singapore you can only do manual. oh and if you have an auto license, you wont be able to convert to a singapore license till i think 3 years later or something like that. whereas if you get a manual license you can convert it in 6 months provided you’ve already passed your basic theory. and you’re actually not allowed to drive in singapore with an australian license if you’re singaporean. my sis got stopped by a cop back in december and he gave her a warning.

!!!!! WHAT??

OK.. so let’s say I get my auto license in Australia and get my P1 plate. Then after 2 years, I can get my P2 plate. Then after another 1 year, I can get my FULL auto license. That’s correct, right?

Then let’s say I go back to Singapore after those 3 years (which means I’ll have my full license).. can I convert to my SG license straightaway? Or do I need ANOTHER 3 years with the full license before I can?

Cos if the latter’s the case, then I need to be here for SIX(!) years before I can convert my license in Singapore! AHhhhhhhh tell me that’s not true?? I’m starting to panic :X

no no, once you have your P plate for at least 6 months (for a manual license) you can convert already. meaning once you get your auto license P plate, you can convert 3 years from then. at least i think its around 3 years, could be less though so maybe get someone in singapore to find out.

Ohhh.. *whew* So basically once I get my Ps, 3 years from then I can get my SG license.. that’s not too bad i suppose!

dang…driver’s ed was offered at my high school for free, but i took it from some other place for about $275. that was just for my permit. i had to pay for my actual driver’s test to be certified for a license. licenses don’t cost a thing here though.

Wow.. thats’s expensive. Over here in the US all we need is 15 dollars to take the exam and get the license. But what someone said earlier is true. You’ll need to have the license for 6mths-a year before you can convert it to a singaporean driving license. During this period you’re suposed to be in the place where you got your license too(which means a 6mth-a year residency), because then, many ppl would just go to the US to get their license and go back just because its sooooo much cheaper. But anyway, good luck on your driving lessons!

You’re learning too?

Some of the similarities between us are almost scary! ; ) I was planning on trying for a license this year myself. I’ve never had a real interest in driving; in fact, doing so often gives me a headache. If we had a decent mass transit system in my town, I’d gladly stick with that and forget even bothering with a license, buuuut we don’t.

Hope your lessons go well! Is there anyone who can help you get practice in for free, to reduce the expenses? What about that Chris fellow? Well, whatever you do, be careful and best wishes!

Re: You’re learning too?

Hehe same here.. never really wanted to drive cos I never saw the need to! And *lol* Chris can’t drive either so he’s in exactly the same position as me!!

Wowzers Bev:) That is ultra mega expensive. I mean you’re probably paying a down payment for a car:(
But I’m glad you’re really enjoying it though:)
So you learning the manual or auto? I can’t drive the manual for nuts coz its too confusing wil all the shifting of breaks and clutch. For me auto is the way to go:)
Maybe if you learn faster you might not have to go for all 50 lessons?
Better find out.
All the best and welcome to the world of driving.
Shree

I haven’t even THOUGHT about buying a car yet! :T But once I pass, my parents’ll help me out and also I (hopefully) will be in a career by then and can pay them back..

I’m doing auto cos manual’s too useless for me.. I’ll just never really have a car that’ll have it. But I can learn manual later on anyway, the instructor said it’s best to start with auto to get the hang of it, then transfer to manual.

It’s the law that I need at LEAST 50 hrs though.. and the instructor keeps a log book and stuff. I wisih it was less :T

Where I’m orginally from there are driving lessons given through the high school… but not too many take them. My mom (primarily) taught me how to drive — I didn’t take lessons. I think it was around $30 US, is ALL(!).

you don’t need minimum 50 hours of driving lessons from an instructor by the laws. you do however need minimum 50 hours driving practice with a fully licensed driver in NSW. Now whether this is an instructor, your friend, or your mum, dad, it doesn’t matter. So the money spending isn’t strictly true.

However, if you don’t have a car… that is one of the only ways you’re going to get access to driving one. if you pay for lessons.

Most people have a few lessons whilst practicising heaps with a family car, and then go for their license.

However if you’re unco like me, and after 30 lessons still can’t drive….. πŸ™‚ and need more lessons.. πŸ™‚ you’ll need to fork that amount πŸ™‚

Yeah.. my parents are overseas though and some of my friends can drive, but don’t have cars.. or have really really old cars and haven’t been driving for all that long, and I feel kinda bad asking them to teach me for a few hrs a week. my parents figured that if I’m going to learn,I might as well learn from a school that’ll teach me everything I need to know.. Most people do about 10 hrs with a school and the rest with a parent/relative -wish I could do that too!

I BETTER be able to know how to drive DAMN WELL after *50* hrs with a driving instructor! If not, I’ll err… bomb the school or something πŸ˜›

Before i read someone elses post

I just assumed you were driving a manual and was like woah! All that gear changing in your first lesson! I am learning to drive manual as the cars are cheaper and they are better for short journeys (well non motorway driving) which is all i will really be doing. Good luck, my driving instructor always says it gets easier with practice.

My lessons cost Β£15 an hour here in the uk. A friend told me it is mandatory to have at least 30 lessons so that would be Β£450 then around Β£20 for the provisional liscence then when you pass Β£25 or so for the real liscence and you have to pay for taking the theory test too. All in all about Β£550 i assume yowsa!

Re: Before i read someone elses post

Heheh no way! No manual for me since I’ll never drive them.. but I may learn later just for the heck of it. I love the feeling driving a car gives though – like you’re all hulking and big and powerful πŸ˜›

Your lessons cost the same, but you need 30 hrs whereas I need 50 :((((( It used to be only 20hrs or so but the government jacked it up.

Re: Well after learning auto manual should be easier

As you will have already learn the steering, changing lanes etc so it shouldnt be too hard. Do you have to do the hazard warning est in au. with your theory test? We have to do that and if you dont pass that you cant take your driving test till you have. We probably have that instead of the extra 20 hrs driving. It sucks that i dont have anyone else who can help me learn to drive who i know will do it for free.

Re: Before i read someone elses post

sasky, Just to let you know your friend is wrong. There is NO mandatory number of driving lessons you have to take in the UK. My dad taught me to drive by taking me out in his car on quiet roads because he said I’d get better teaching and more attention from him than from a driving school instructor (which was true). I took my theory test by myself, I then had 3 driving lessons with an instructor (which were Β£20 each) before taking my first test – which I failed, but it actually wasn’t my fault. I had one more lesson with an instructor before taking my test for a second time and passing!!! When I did it, it was about Β£20 for a provisional licence, Β£25 for the theory test, Β£35 for each practical test and Β£15 to convert provisional to actual licence – but I’m pretty certain prices have gone up now, I started learning to drive early 1999 and passed my test November 1999.

Good luck learning to drive, Bev!! It’s really good fun, and the added independence you get will change your life!

Thanks for the info

I will ask my driving instructor and see what he says, my friend had passed her test so i just assumed she was right! I dont have anyone who will teach me to drive though so it will have to be the instructor, i have a feeling it will be quite a long time lol!

Whoa…that’s expensive. It’s really free to get our licenses here. You pay $20 for you permit and you are allowed to drive using it for a year only if you have a parent in the car with you. Then you go back for the license and it is free. They don’t require any driving school/lessons but they should because some people scare me and shouldn’t be driving.

You’re learning too?

You’re in America right? You guys get the best deals :T We don’t get ANY driving thing through school at all.. we don’t even get sex ed, haha.

gal, driving an auto is just like daytona. easy. there is no kick in it at all. wait till u try learning a manual. the number of times you *WILL* stall and change to the wrong gear………

HOLEY CAMOLEY!!! $3000 to get your licence? thats a hell load of money, bev. and if im not mistaken, that’s prolly a lil less than rm7000. i prolly spent about rm 500-600 here in malaysia for my driving lessons and licence.

im not too sure if its correct to say that you drove 50-60kps coz that’ll mean driving 50-60 kilometres per SECOND. maybe you meant kph as in kilometres per hour?

It only costs $30 per hour here in Perth… and there’s no fixed number of hours you have to do. Just take lessons till the instructor feels you are ready (average of 15 lessons usually. i spent slightly over AU$1K to get my license this year… and driving really feels great! πŸ™‚ wait till you come to freeways…. heh.

Ahhh I’m in the wrong state! I know it used to be about $30/hr almost 10 years ago, but now it’s $50 πŸ™ And we HAVE to drive for AT LEAST 50 hrs before I can take the test.. grrr.

exp!

Wow thats so expensive! πŸ™‚ for canada its $110 for ur liscense and about $300 to learn…! thats probably only $300 US…$2000 US is CRAZY! blah! i’m glad i’m not in aus right now! (even though minus the driving dollars, i would LOVE to be there)

Re: exp!

Geez, I think EVERY country is cheaper except here.. driving schools are just *really* expensive in Sydney. when Mum did hers, it was only US$20/hr and for me now it’s almost US$35/hr!

Re: exp!

thats crazy!! are you sure you shouldn’t check out OTHER driving schools? maybe that one is just insanely crazy!! lol πŸ™‚ good luck! i’m sure ur an awesome driver πŸ™‚

LOL! what made you want to drive *now*? i was like you – my mom MADE me go for driving tests. in my state (sarawak, malaysia) it costs $600-700 for girls to learn, and it’s $100 less for guys. discrimination, much? πŸ™ in west malaysia, i think it’s about 500 or so, but there’s *always* that $200 or so “kopi-o” money .. which means bribe money. it’s just ‘part of the deal’ that they might as well charge $700.

U can choose not to pay the RM 200 though cos i didnt. Its not true that u will definitely fail if U wont, like many think. But yeah here, at most RM 700 inclusive of everything. Without the bribe though.

Back in Miri, you must must must give the “coffee” money or else they will fail you (even if you drive superbly and never made a single mistake). I don’t know why.. but it is just like that. It’s stupid though. It’s like practically BUYING your own license even though you’re very much qualified for one in the first place! Grr..

Which part of S’wak are you from btw?

Heheh yeah, mum’s been bugging me to learn to drive ever since I started Uni. WHY is it more for girls to learn though? Thought it’d be cheaper cos females are better drivers in general *waits for a guy to jump in and say I suck!* and so they’d WANT to give more licenses to them..

But er… isn’t bribing illegal??

In Michigan they offer drivers ed through our schools (some) and we can take it for free that way. Or take it through a certified school. It costs $45USD to take the road examination, and I think another 13 to validate it all (I’ve yet to pass). Where they really get you is car insurance, tags, and plates.

I gues you’re going auto then?

*heh* good luck with it! I went for my license twice last month, failed both times! eeps! so I’m waiting a bit… at least I didn’t have to pay for every lessoin though… have you got any friend who could help you get your hours up, saves paying so much?

Yeah.. auto, dad said it wasn’t worth me learning manual cos I’d never be driving a manual car anyway! Man I hope I pass the first time, it’s too expensive for me if I fail :T I do have friends that can teach, but no car πŸ™

I miss my car!

Wow.. that’s exp! I only had to pay a few hundred for my lesson and test in M’sia. Good luck anyway! Driving is fun fun fun πŸ™‚

Re: I miss my car!

Re: exp!

thats crazy!! are you sure you shouldn’t check out OTHER driving schools? maybe that one is just insanely crazy!! lol πŸ™‚ good luck! i’m sure ur an awesome driver πŸ™‚

LOL! what made you want to drive *now*? i was like you – my mom MADE me go for driving tests. in my state (sarawak, malaysia) it costs $600-700 for girls to learn, and it’s $100 less for guys. discrimination, much? πŸ™ in west malaysia, i think it’s about 500 or so, but there’s *always* that $200 or so “kopi-o” money .. which means bribe money. it’s just ‘part of the deal’ that they might as well charge $700.

Really?! It’s pretty cheap in malaysia! It’s quite expensive in Singapore too apparently but harder to pass.Boo!
