Living in... Shanghai, Uncategorized SHANGHAI ORIENTATION 22 February 2009

We attended the Shanghai Orientation for New Arrivals yesterday – a half day session to give new expats information and advice on living in China. Amazingly, it’s a free event, supported by fantastic expat-friendly sponsors such as Element Fresh cafe, Portman Medical, Aspara Spa, etc, etc… We were totally blown away with how helpful and valuable the information was. Plus, it was also a great way to make friends!

Unfortunately, we’ve come to the stark realisation that expats are, simply, much older than us. We don’t fall into the typical age group of 35-and-upwards year old expats that have moved with families. We also don’t fall into the typical expat situation where 1 spouse has the job, and the other is the “supporting spouse”. People were actually floored that we were both relocated by our companies. We’re in this strange neither-here-nor-day situation where we’re far too old to hang out with the expat kids, yet too young to hang out with the expat couples.. The only age group that we really fall into are the backpackers community or people that are here teaching English! All I want are a handful of corporate expat women my age, that I can hang out with and be friends with – but it’s almost like an impossible ask. I’m nervous… at this rate, we’ll have no proper friends! πŸ™

Absolutely loved the sessions though, and soaked it all in. They gave us a great, frank, rundown on what life was like in China.. and how to manage household ayis (maids) and drivers, plus the nuances of Chinese culture and how it works in an office environment. There was also helpful info on the medical system and what to do in an emergency and even how to keep a marriage alive with a warning that the men tend to get targeted by certain Shanghainese women, haha!

Breafast, and even lunch, was provided by Element Fresh Cafe.. which was brilliant. Might have to check out their other events… seems like a great place to be πŸ™‚

Orientation day for expats

Also bought their book set with lots of on-the-ground helpful info

After that, we went to do some apartment hunting and whilst walking around the streets outside, stumbled upon a few streets that was bustling with locals doing their daily shopping. It was like stepping back 50 years ago (remember, we just came from viewing high rise apartments) to a place where it was noisy, people chopping food on wooden blocks, making fresh noodles (!), and pointing at live fish to urge us to buy. It was fascinating seeing what the average Shanghainese does/buys on a regular Saturday afternoon.

Along the streets at Laoximen

A roadside noodle stall

Live fish and fresh veggies, anyone?

A huge place selling meat. A bit like a horror movie!

The street was lined with people selling stuff

A lady washing her hair out on the street (???)

Got another manicure. OPI deep red with sparkling silver tips!

wow i never realise your situation could be so rare in China. but i’m sure you’ll find more like minded friends soon! i guess in HK now i’m pretty lucky that there are lots of women my age in my situation, so making friends seem quite easy.

hello, actually there are a lot of young single singaporean expants (women included!) in shanghai! maybe you can join some singapore embassy events?

Ohhh how dyou find ’em? I can’t go to the Aussie womens meetup ‘cos it’s on a Wed morning… no doubt for the “supporting spouses” and not working women, grrrr!!

hey sounds like my first few months in paris…i went to expat meetups and the people were out of my age group..i was by far the youngest! then i met other singaporeans but they were all ”singapore wives” married to french men haha. Finally i hung out a lot with my fellow expats in my company, mostly young single gals and guys!! There is a younger expat group i found online, meetup.com. They should have a shanghai version. Otherwise i also joined the singapore embassy events in paris, again families, but i am convinced that in shanghai there will be more younger ppl. I have friends of friends (gals) who are working in PR or marketing. Here is a blog of my good friend..he is a french expat in shanghai, his chinese wife is my good friend too! drop him a msg! http://www.zenzoo.fr/ShanghaiShift/ Good luck and have fun in your new city..so fun!

Aww thankjs for the link! Ya I do find there are young people here but they tend to be backpackers or English teachers.. no professional young working women with spouses, wah!! I think I gotta hunt harder.hhehe

Yeah I can imagine it’s hard if you don’t fit into either the student or the older couple with kids expat category! My friend Christie (who you met at my dinner – she was the one that brought the cake) is around the same age as you and Chris, but then I think she fits into a whole other category, young single expats in Shanghai…

Making friends can be tough, but hopefully you’ll find a way to meet some cool, like-minded people! πŸ™‚

I hear ya; the only other expats I run into are married with toddlers or 45 year old married men who are here but left their wife and kids back in Europe. I have two laowai friends from university who are in Suzhou and they are doing well meeting other people, but they’re out at bars all night long 4/7 days of the week chatting girls up! I think it’s especially harder to integrate into the expat community because people probably think you are a local so less open to exchanging conversation.

Ack I wish I didn’t bite my nails, otherwise I would also be taking advantage of the pretty and cheap manicures!

The sparkly nails are pretty!
Arw. I’m sure you both will make loads of friends in no time! Meanwhile, I think both of you seem to be settling in nicely πŸ™‚

It’s just hard, and frustrating, to make friends…! Hmmm… does nike have an office in Shanghai? maybe you can come too… hhehehhehehe!

Maybe there is some group for expats?
