We’re getting the LX3 for times when it’s too much of a hassle to bring out the DSLR. One thing that annoys me about it is the fact that it has a separate lens cap though. Kinda annoying.

Let me just add to the confusion. =p

IMHO, panasonic is pretty good for its compact and prosumer range. I have the LX3 (and an older panasonic model) and have not regretted it. But of course if you change your mind and decide to go for DSLR, it’s either canon or nikon.

hi bev-

my bf and i both use canon SLRs and he has a lot of fancy expensive lens so the photo it take is fab! however, it is a tad bulky and a bit of a hassle to carry around… i usually use it for parties and day trips πŸ™‚

i recently got myself a RICOH R10 compact camera- it has many advanced functions, looks super sexy and takes AMAZING macro shots, which is perfect since u love taking shopping/food photography πŸ™‚ u might wanna check it out here-

got it from an online japanese store for cheap! not sure how much it is selling for elsewhere though πŸ™‚

I just got a Panasonic Lumix for Christmas and I LOVE IT. It’s SO light and helps my shaky hands in all photos πŸ˜€ I’m normally a canon girl but the usage of regular was a minus which is why I chose the lumix!

I can’t say I know anything about DSLR’s and the like but I’m quite a loyal Canon fan so whilst I will obviously rave about them, there are a few things about that Powershot that I would consider. I personally find Powershots to be the most cumbersome of all their cameras. Most notably because of the regular batteries it uses (both chunky AND a pain as they don’t last as long as battery packs IMO. See what I mean in this pic http://www.cameralabs.com/reviews/Canon_PowerShot_SX10_IS/images/CanonSX10_battery.jpg). Also, research as to if this powershot has the dreaded E18 problem that plagued Powershots (including mine) early on. It shouldnt be a problem as this was quite a while ago, but just thought I’d mention it.

My camera just carked it so I’ll be following your search with interest. I’ve heard good things on Lumix cos it uses great Leica lenses (Canon SX10 has 20x zoom, tho!). Agree with needing a ‘petite’ camera – it’s hard to take discreet photos with a bulky dslr no matter how compact it is.

I’m a canon fan so I’ll say go for a Canon whichever you decide on πŸ˜› For a ‘dslr’, one that has manual functions but not exactly an SLR, get the G10. I got it and totally loving it. You can adjust speed, apperture, lighting etc. It’s 14.1megapixels. If you want to invest and go deeper into photography, go for the Canon SLR though. Think it’s the EOs40 or someting? Latest is 50 series. The G10 is really compact btw.

IMHO, I’d go with the lumix, esp the second one if size is important. my girlfriend took one on our trip to europe, and i was mightily impressed with its performance!

I always have trusted the Canon brand (although I don’t own one and take pics with my Nokia phone!).
Having said that, do you know Nokia is the world’s largest manufacturer of digital cameras? Ahead of your Canons’ and Sonys’. Random bit of trivia that I found interesting!

well.. canon is pretty much the best when it comes to cameras, so i vote the last one! i don’t really know if it is the best though πŸ˜› plus, it looks so much like my canon SLR (I have the Rebel XTi)

Lumix LX3. I’m happily using that w/o any complaints! It’s light, come with both manual and intelligence auto functions, awesome picture qualities in both raw and normal output, HD video, etc.

After my sister bought her super pricey cannon ($1500) she gave me her Lumix dmc-fz7. It’s an older model but I LOVE it! I hear the new ones are even better. πŸ™‚

All my vacation pics I took recently were taken with the lumix.

I shall be watching this as that’s what I want for my next camera too. All I can say is that the top Lumix looks very similar to Matt’s and his is quite bulky, the second Lumix looks awesome, but I would tend to want to go the Canon too even though I don’t know if it can do all those features, I’ve just mostly had Canons and they’ve all been good πŸ˜›
