Fujiya is a little Japanese restaurant, tucked away behind a small entrance and upstairs in Chinatown. Don’t be deceived by it’s seemingly hidden appearance though, as the place is brimming with Japanese and other foodies ‘in the know’. A friend’s been recommending this place for awhile but we hadn’t gotten round to going. Anyway, 7 of us went for dinner after some (speedy) late-night shopping in the City, and it was already packed when we entered. The wait staff are all Japanese with spotty English, so be prepared to speak slowly and repeat yourself. They’re very sweet though, and amused us when the ‘server’ refused to take our order because only the ‘ordering’ staff could. Heh! Weird system but anyway.

The restaurant is cozy and all woody. The enticing wafts of food going past nearly drove me crazy as we were waiting for our food! But fortunately the drinks were served almost instantaneously – probably a trick to keep the diners quiet πŸ˜› I tried out the Frozen Green Tea & Alcohol which is basically like a green tea milkshake, or drinking green tea ice cream – sooooo nice!! Their cocktail menu is, strangely, as extensive as their food menu – it’s all very fun though because their cocktails all have a Japanese/Asian influence so they’re pretty unique.

The menu displays all the dishes in photos, which is excellent – why don’t all restaurants do that?! I’m definitely a visual person. Everything looked so exciting we nearly ordered everything on the menu πŸ˜‰ Finally decided on a couple of dishes and they were great choices – all so good! But the STAR dish, but far, was the Deep Fried Camembert Cheese!! I always order Fried Cheese if I see it on the menu, but this is by far and away the BEST I’ve had. It had a really light and fluffy batter and the cheese was silky, warm and oozed everywhere once you took a bite. Totally divine and I’d go back solely for their cheese. Mmmmmmm!! We ordered 4 plates and it still wasn’t enough πŸ˜‰

If you’re looking for something new, try out Nagoya (sp?) in Chinatown. I went a few weekends ago, really nice Japanese BBQ. Meat buffet is yummo

Ooo I’ve never heard of it! There’s a Jap bbq right where I live that’s always packed so I want to try that out too :)~

deep fried camembert cheese!? yum!!! hogs breath cafe used to do them and they were fantastic but unfortunately they got rid of it hoho im so going to get me some fried cheese!

Yeahhhh it was Hogs Breath many years ago that first got me to fried cheese too!! But it seriously is not as good as this Fujiya one, by far!! TRY ITTTTTTTTT

Hmmm…I notice that Japanese people use a lot of Camembert cheese to deep fry and also in their croquettes. I wonder why? I guess probably because it’s a yummy and flavorful tasting cheese. *^^*

Yeah, it’s amazing! I’ve had it at many Jap places though and Fujiya is a totally diff standard.. it was sooooooo good :)~

I like the food there but my husband refuses to go back due to a combination of being spoiled by Japan’s prices and the terrible service we’ve received πŸ˜›

Ohh that’s awful you guys got bad service! We were a bit weirded out by their strange system of various waiters serving diff purposes though πŸ˜‰
