Ah! I had a dinner here the last time I was in Shanghai. I'll have to say I had an ordinary experience in comparison to you (slow service, army of people standing around but if you tried to wave for one totally not responsive unless you yelled out). It's so unfortunate though because it's such a pretty restaurant, well besides having to walk past a smelly toilet stall.

I wasn't sure if they would hit me or something, lol! It's diff in Australia where it's EXPECTED you have to give good service, whereas in China it's often shocking and no one blinks an eye :X

I think in China you can definitely just kick up a HUGE fuss and refuse to pay etc. Just stand there and argue with them. It's a pain and makes you feel even MORE cranky but... it's worth it! I'm pretty sure that's what the locals do in Chinese restaurants, so why should the western ones be able to get away with treating you so badly?
