Copenhagen OFF TO COPENHAGEN! 17 June 2013

My parents, in a moment of madness awesomeness, decided to take all six of us on a jaunt to Copenhagen….. via business class!

They have this idea to take our while family on a big overseas trio each year… hence our Boston/USA trip last year. But this year we are off to Europe instead. Wheeeeee 😀

So here we are chilling out having dinner in the lounge. Hunter is chomping down on satay sticks and I am blogging on the ipad mini. And rocking my no-makeup look.

Super facepalm!

Thus all my blog entries will have crappy ol iPhone pictures. Sighhhhh……

Anyhoodle, I’m off. See you guys in Europe!!

Hey,

Oh then I think I saw your dad around 6 pm today outside Royal Copenhagen store on Strøget! He was alone with the baby stroller 🙂

Torvehallerne is one of my favourite places, it is a pretty new indoor market. You should try fish n chips from Fiskerikajen in Hall 1 (there are 2 Halls in total). Fiskerikajen makes VERY good fish, but so-so chips, but overall a really good pit stop for good snacks. You should also try Danish open sandwich (smørrebrød in Danish), in the same Hall 1, there is a place called Hallernes smørrebrød, they make super delicious smørrebrød, however they are rather pricy, Smørrebrød is a very Danish specialty and most Danish eat it for lunch. Coffee Collective in Hall 2 makes the best coffee in Copenhagen!

If you go to Strøget again, you should pay a visit at Conditori La Glace, it is probably the most well-known cake shop in Copenhagen (and probably in Denmark as well). It is located on Skoubogade 3, a side street to Strøget. Alternatively, there is another really good cake store (only for takeaway), called Dessertdragens Kageværksted (located on Sankt Peders Stræde 26, quite close to La Glace as well). I just adore their cakes! Yum!

If you feel like burgers, there are 2 places in the city that make really good burgers: Cocks and Cows and MASH (MASH is also known for their steaks). My brother-in-law loves Retour (http://www.retoursteak.dk/forside/) for steaks, however, we haven’t tried it yet, and we will definitely try it soon! 🙂

I think you and your family will really enjoy Tivoli, tomorrow there will be a weekly Friday concert starting at 10pm. In Tivoli, there is a famous restaurant called Grøften, where they are known for their smørrebrød. This place is kid-friendly. When you enter Tivoli from the main entrance, on the right hand side, about 20 meters down, there is an ice-cream place called Svaneke, one of the best ice-cream I have ever had in Copenhagen.

Most of the good shops are located on Strøget and the surrounding area, there are a few shopping malls (such as Fisketorvet and Fields) but they are located outside the city. I wouldn’t really recommend you go to though, since they are the same in all big cities. If you are looking for some exclusive Scandinavian designed fashion brands, SAND is an exclusive Danish luxury clothing brand &Malene Birger (http://goo.gl/maps/FbvEE).

Vesterbrogade has a lot of pretty nice restaurants and Nørrebrogade has a lot of ethnic people and shops, in particular Blågårds Plads is special, but don’t go there late at night. During the day is perfectly safe.

Another place I like to go in the summer is called Toldboden (Nordre Toldbod 24), it is located not far from the Queen’s Palace, along the water, they make very good fish n chips and other seafood dishes, and it is pretty cool place to hang out. Next to it, is a very fancy Danish food specialty shop, owned by a Danish who also owns Copenhagen oldest Michelin starred restaurant called Kong Hans.

My husband made this route (http://goo.gl/maps/Grzbq) for you and your family (I don’t know if you remember him, but he was the only Dane in New College back in 2003 :P) . He thinks this will be a nice route to walk.

Hope all these are useful! 🙂

OH MY that’s a huge coincidence!! Yes he was there whilst mum and I were in the alley area too checking out Royal Cafe. Aww wish you’d been there a few secs longer and I’d have seen you. Are you going to be around Strøget again? Or Fælledparken or Frederiksborg in the next few days??

Aww man we were at Torvehallerne, but missed out on getting the fish & chips!! I did see it but the area’s not very baby-friendly so we couldn’t sit down to eat 🙁

I was at La Glace but didn’t realise you had to take a ticket, and didn’t want to queue all over again cos we had to take the kids home to dinner/sleep but will drop in again if we’re in teh area. What cakes would you recommend? 🙂

We were at Tivoli yesterday! The kids LOVED it, you’re right.

Thanks soooo much for the route. We will try that out! 🙂

My work is approx. 2 mins by bike to Strøget, so I do go to Strøget quite often after work just to shop around a bit before heading home 😛
Fælledparken is nice, but if you and your family want to see a more special park, Frederiksberg Have in Frederiksberg is actually really nice and still looks the same as it did in the 1700s, and you can take the metro from Kongens Nytorv to Frederiksberg (approx. 10 mins), and from Frederiksberg Station, it takes about 10 mins walk. Alternatively, you can easily walk from Tivoli to Frederiksberg Have (approx. 30 mins slow walk) (http://goo.gl/maps/xFR0x). My husband and I live in Frederiksberg, next to Frederiksberg Have, so if you do go there we could easily meet for a coffee for example on the nice Frederiksberg Allé near the park. It’s an old royal boulevard lined with trees and a lot of famous people live on the street including the former prime minister (we’ve spotted him a few times, he’s really old). It all depends on the weather tomorrow of course.
Alternatively I think Soren and I will be in the Strøget sometime tomorrow since we need to pick something up in Christianshavn. We could meet at La Glace then and we can get you a free cake 🙂 Soren won a gift card to there a while back by making a poem about their apple cake 😛 and we have a few left on it.

If you guys decided to go to Fælledparken, then go there this Sunday at 18:00 because it is a Sankt Hans day (mid-summer night party), where people burn fake witches on top on a giant bund fire. Sankt Hans day parties are celebrated in several places in the city, including Frederiksberg Have (starts at approx. 18:45).

La Glace is famous for their Sports cake, cos it looks rather massive. My hubby and I have tried several of their cakes, and we really like Othellokagen and apple cakes 😛

Too bad you guys didn’t get to try the fish & chips at Torvehallerne 😛 They are good!! It’s not too late to make it for the one in Toldboden yet 😉

How long are you and your family going to stay in Copenhagen this time?

Send me an email if you get time to meet up and it’s convenient, then I can send you my phone no. 🙂

ha funny! Maybe I will walk into you and your family here in Copenhagen! 🙂 I live here!

* Spring sales have just started here! yay!

Ahhh I forgot you lived here! Damn should’ve asked you a week or more ago on the must-go places.

We went to the strøget pedestrian street area today and it was fun 🙂 and yes, the sales are amazing!!

Tomorrow we’re going to Tivoli, and at some point I wanna check out Torvehallerne Market and Frederiksborg!

Any must-go places for eating or shopping that you have up your sleeve??

Hey Bev, I live just 35 mins away by train from Copenhagen (in the city of Lund) and less than 10 mins’ walk from the Lund train station. It would be so awesome if we could meet up! No pressure though, something to consider if time permits 🙂 have fun in Europe!
