Little Huia
403 Dagu Lu (???403?)
Shanghai, China

PRICE: ???
RATING:

Little Huia opened up right outside our apartment just a few weeks ago and we were overjoyed! This little New Zealand brasserie answers our prayers of a decent Western restaurant in the area and boasts very polite and attentive staff. The menu offers up a selection of New Zealand seafood and meats. Prices for mains start at 90RMB and go up to around 250RMB (from memory) which is slightly on the pricey side on a street that offers a lot of cheap eats.

However, it’s worth checking out the Daily blackboard specials, which are extensive and are EXCELLENTLY priced! A stellar Steak Sandwich for 60RMB with tender chunks of beef and caramelised onions, and a Salmon Fettuccine (50RMB) with tendrils of fat pasta (though a tad skimpy on the salmon) went down very well. We also shared a Salami Pizza (60RMB) which was tasty, but the base reminded us of store-bought crust and not freshly-made pizza crust.

Their All-Day Breakfast is a stunner, especially since it’s “buy 1 get 1 free” from 8 – 11AM – woohoo!! The Spinach and free-range egg breakfast tart (40RMB) is done exactly in New Zealand style – a thin, light buttery base encasing actual real spinach! Usually spinach tarts are merely egg with bits of minced spinach, so it was impressive that this tart came with actual spinach. The roasted grape tomatoes on top were sweet and juicy, the perfect accompaniment to the savory tart.

The Eggs Benedict (50RMB) were declared “delicious” and with good value to boot. But of course, I’m most interested in the New Zealand Fish & chips. When we went, they had sold out of their supply of fish, but had Japanese snapper, and we were happy to try that out. Glad we did, because the fish & chips were outstanding. Beautifully beer-battered and crisp, with moist fish on the inside. We would’ve liked double the portion of chips, though – chips make everything better IMHO!

We tried the Blueberry pancakes with fruit, tatua mascarpone, manuka honey (40RMB) and whilst we enjoyed the unusual (and delectable) toppings, the pancakes weren’t as moist and fluffy as we would have hoped, and we had to ask for extra honey since the amount drizzled on was almost non-existent. A shared Chocolate Muffin (15RMB) went down well, though it was a little on the basic side (probably made with mostly cocoa powder and not actual rich melted chocolate). However, for the price, it was still not bad.. could have done with a luscious scoop of Vanilla bean ice cream though πŸ™‚ A lovely glass of New Zealand pinot noir was very well-received and at 40RMB, excellently priced.

Don’t forget to try their luscious Illy coffees, beautifully presented and the perfect way to cap off your meal. We’ll be back to try out more of Little Huia’s goodies, since they’re in such a convenient location. Lovely ambience, and I am most definitely having that fish & chips again!

For a NZ’er who misses home I will have to try this place out. I actually agree with what people have said, it would be hard to define what New Zealand cuisine is compared to countries like China, Japan, Italy etc. I myself find it quite hard to describe NZ food when people ask me.

I just say it’s like Aussie food, it’s what it’s closest too IMHO ‘cos of the fresh seafood and lamb/beef. It’s yum πŸ™‚

I reckon the pricing’s pretty reasonable for western food.. esp when compared to Nova across the road from them – their prices are crazy, eek!

I’m not going to lie, I never thought of it either. When I think “New Zealand food” I think like…Maori. But it was settled by European countries, right? Do you know offhand which countries have influenced the culture/food the most?
