Living in... Shanghai, Uncategorized SHANGHAI ACROBATIC TROUPE SHOW! 14 October 2009

We got ourselves some tickets to the Shanghai Acrobatic Troupe show, because amazingly, we’d never had a chance to check out an Acrobatic show since moving to Shanghai earlier this year. Chinese acrobats are famous for being flat-out excellent. I really think that the Chinese people, when driven, are REALLY driven.. and have an incredible strive to suceed. I’ve heard that the acrobats practice for hours and hours a day, every single day. It can’t be easy, but man they are impressive.

The show was very evidently catered for foreigners. In fact, tourists turned up by the busloads! Basically the ENTIRE theatre was packed with foreigners.. it was surreal, like we were in Australia, and there was hardly an Asian face around. The show itself had a lot of music, and amazing backgrounds and choreography. It’s hard to explain, but I felt the costumes, backgrounds, etc were quite Westernised. Good, because it meant that we were well entertained and ‘got’ it all, but bad in a way because it made me wonder what an acrobatic show for China locals would be like – I wonder what the differences would be?

We loved the show though – it was fabulous with lots of breathtaking moments and beautiful backdrops and costumes. Very very well put together, presented, and performed. It’s expensive (I assume this is because, again, it’s catered for foreigners) but still worth it because we had a great time and a great evening!

Man she’s got good balance

Launching up in the air and skipping with a hoop – easy peasy, right?

Lots of guys and lots of hoops

The ‘beginners’ level.. before it gets a whole lot crazier!

One unbelievably flexible girl

Riding a unicycle and juggling – all in sync

Balancing chairs (they weren’t glued/welded together or anything!) and then doing handstands

Really romantic and flowy performance where they ‘flew’ using the ribbons

Jumping and launching people onto a 5-person tower, with no safety net!

TAAAA DAAAAA!

I saw a show like that when I was in Shanghai! Their grand finale was riding a motorcycle through a giant sphere cage… then adding more and more bikes until it was about SEVEN motorbikes in this tiny cage. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time, fearing a fiery explosion :-O It was amazing though.

Eeeek that would FREAK me out! I was really amazed at the stunts they pulled through the whole show, but it made my stomach go all flip-floppy, haha

Saw a similar show in Beijing years ago. If I recall correctly it had mostly locals in the audience who enjoyed the show.
