Living in... Shanghai, Uncategorized IDIOT BUS PEOPLE 13 July 2009

My first China injury… *sigh*. What with all the pushing and shoving and hitting, I guess I should consider myself lucky no blood was drawn in the (almost) 6 months that I’ve been living in Shanghai. Until last week.

You see, I like taking the bus to/from work. I recognise that we live in an expat area, hang out with expat friends, and tend to go to/eat at nice expat places. It’s nice, and without that I’d go insane, but I still like to “live like a local” sometimes.. no matter how deluded that thought may be πŸ˜› So we also visit local street-side food joints, and take public transport to/from work (but not on weekends, where it’s taxi-time!).

Taking the bus to work is like being in an alternate universe. It’s pretty shit. Can’t think of any other way to put it, sorry! Walking to the bus stop is stressfull, with people pushing and shoving on the pathways and bicycles on the sidewalk nearly hitting you (or sometimes they do). The air is dirty because its’ right by the road, and the street itself is dirty (I always have black feet by the end of the day if I wear open-toed shoes).

But that is NOTHING compared to what you face once you’re at the bus stop. The moment the bus appears, people RUN out onto the highway in a frantic rush. Like they’re going to die if they stand at the bus stop and form an orderly queue. So the bus is pulling up on the main road, people are RUSHING out onto the main road with cars and bikes whizzing past… and guess what? I have to do the same!! Because if I don’t, the bus picks up the people that have rushed onto the middle of the road, closes the door and drives off…. leaving me standing on the sidewalk like a (well-mannered) fool.

And so everyone rushes to the door. That’s when the all-out shoving starts. Regardless of whether the bus is completely empty or completely full, people will FRANTICALLY PUSH AND STRUGGLE to be the #1 person up the bus. Why? I have no friggin’ idea!!! Nobody gets a seat anyway, so why bother hitting and pushing? I’m not talking about a little shove. I’m talking about an angry, hateful MASSIVE SHOVE/HIT. People are scowling, people are hitting, everyone has their elbows out… and guess what? It takes FOREVER to get onto the bus. In Australia, everyone queues in a line and gets on the bus, and that system actually means everyone gets onboard faster than if everyone crowds around and hits and pushes each other.

So usually I’m not in the mood to being whacked, and politely stand aside and let them cram/push/hit/shove each other to board the bus. I’m not the only one by the way. I’d say maybe 70% of people act like rabied animals, and 30% are polite and also stand aside and orderly board the bus. However, the 30% of us face another stressful predicament – often the bus fills up, and the driver shuts the doors and drive off! Nice reward for being polite, huh πŸ˜‰

So that fateful day, I let everyone on board the bus… realised the driver was gonna close the doors, and quickly hopped up the bus. It was P-A-C-K-E-D. I basically had my nose right up against the doors, standing on the bottom step. That’s fine and all (I’m used to being PRESSED RIGHT UP against me now)…. but then when he opened the doors at the next step, my foot got caught under the door!!!!!!

I *screamed* in pain and screamed and screamed and screamed. And the idiot bus driver didn’t do anything but said something angrily/swore in Chinese. Finally, he closed the doors again and my foot came free. You’d think he’d apologise, or at least ask how I was, but nup. He was pissed cos I oh-so-unreasonably didn’t allow the doors to open. When my foot was caught for that 10 seconds, all I could think was “I think the door’s actually going to pull off my entire foot”, that’s how huge the pressure was.

Turns out it didn’t, but it did take off half my shoe (shredding and destroying my EXPENSIVE leather shoes) and the top part of my foot was crushed. Couldn’t walk for ages so just sat on the curb side in a bit of a daze. Now, about 3-4 days later, the top part of my foot is still incredibly sore and I can’t touch it (also can’t wear shoes that touch that area). But really, I’m just appalled and disgusted something like this can happen.

It’s really taxing starting AND ending your day with a scowl on your face, after having been shoved and hit. It’s even more taxing when you actually get physically hurt and bleed from it. Sometimes, I don’t even know why I bother.

Arghhh, totally not worth the effort at all, girl! Not sure about the situation in Shanghai, but can’t you just get a car and drive there?

Wow, that’s crazy. Hope your foot is healing well, Bev!

Any chance of a YouTube video of a crazy bus rush from afar?

Ohhhh that is an awesome idea, I’ll have to remember to do that, heh! hope i don’t get beaten up for taking videos tho πŸ˜‰

Oh poor thing! It’s so difficult getting used to rude Chinese people, I don’t think you ever do actually… When I was 5, my hand was stuck in the bus door and I was screaming and screaming and the bus driver didn’t care at all, until the doors opened at the next stop!

Just hang in there! Maybe you should take a taxi to work from now on?

THAT looks horrible, hopefully it’s well on its way to healing by now!!

Last week I had a massive fight with the bus driver because he wouldn’t open the back doors for me because he didn’t hear the bell, when I obviously had pushed the “next stop” button… and I ended up writing this huge email complaining and I received a letter of apology from him AND his supervisor.

get the hairdryer to blow at the bruises (if there is) when the wound is healed. cos sometimes u will need hard rubbing to get rid of bruises, but instead, use the hairdryer.
take care.

Oh my God! This is awful! I can believe the shoving and pushing. I can believe that people are that crazy and that the busses get THAT crowded.

What I can’t believe is that the driver didn’t even care that he got your foot caught in the door and you were screaming in pain!!! WTF! Remind me never to take the bus if I’m ever in China….

It’s kinda being in a different world sometimes.. it does take getting used to:X So sad, becuse other aspects of Shanghai are just awesome!

Yeah I totally don’t get how people don’t Queue here… once at the airport my flight was delayed and to try get on the waitlist for the next flight (versus waiting 4 bloody hrs for my delayed one to arrive) involved going up to a counter and basically shoving my way through a crowd of 5000 Chinese to get to the counter. At the counter, the process was to see who could shove their passport/ID in the face of the counter lady closest to her nose so she’d take hopefully take it and note your name down.

Or when people cut or shove their way to be the first to go through the metal detector in the airport… WHY!???!

Oh man!!! Ouch!!! I remember as a kid visiting Taiwan the bus system was nuts. I think this was back either late 80’s or early 90’s. We were all on the bus and it stopped to pick up passengers. This one make was getting off and the door shut on his book bag. The bus driver didn’t see and kept driving cause the poor man to run with his bag. The passengers quickly alerted the bus driver who stopped but wasn’t too happy about it. He didn’t even check to see if the guy was ok. I’m not used to that in the states. If something like that happened, it would be a big deal! Paper work would have to be written up and a report filed. πŸ™

OMG! did you file a complaint against the driver? or at least, filed an incident report? it’s a good thing we have really nice public transports here in Toronto.

I hope it heals in time for the big day.

Hehe nooo I’m in China, filing complaints like that don’t work – they wo’t understand what I’m saying, and won’t care either!

You are really brave to want to go through the Chinese local transport system *thumbs up* But the process will make us resent the locals in the long run cos there is no way to change their behaviour and we simply need to shove back so that we do not get step all over! Arghhhh! Do take care and stay sane!

That’s very true! I thinkn the government should launch this massive Courtesy Begins With Me campaign that the Singapore government did.. it’s sorta worked πŸ˜›

Your poor foot! And blood pressure! I’m supposing you had some choice words for the bus driver…?

Take care of yourself, I’m sure Chris would agree on this.

That sucks like donkey balls about what happen to your foot. Something similar happen my hand a couple of weeks ago. The pain was too much but some major butt kicking was long over due.

Take care of it and hope you feel better soon!

Donkey’s balls… ROFL!!!!

Man I wish I could get all those people that shoved, and the bus driver, put them in a corner, and just have it out on em. GRR

Heheh I’m actually just about to post that in a minute! I use Biodroga (in my new post) and Rationale (can search for info online if you’re interested) from Australia. They’re bothAMAZING…

I cannot get over how rude and violent they can be! I guess it is a sign of over population but nonetheless…sheesh! You poor thing. I hope it heals soon.

Yeah it’s true.. I guess any crowded city is like that. Not far off NYC who’s famous for their lack of social graces πŸ˜›

I’m amazed you braved the bus crowd.

The shoving is normal, sad but true. And they get surprised when foreigners react to their lack of social graces.

Yeah, now I totally appreciate public transport in other countries πŸ˜› The awesome thing about Shanghai’s though is the price – about US$0.30 for a trip as far as you want to go!! in Australia it’s about US$3-4 whihch is just insane :X

That whole experience sounds so terrifying! My biggest fear is getting a shoelace stuck in the top of an escalator… *shiver* and it sounds like you basically experienced that with the bus. D: I hope it heals well.

Yeah that would be similiar! Man the pressure and that pulling feeling.. *shudder*… I definitely don’t want to experience that every again..

Heheh I’m actually just about to post that in a minute! I use Biodroga (in my new post) and Rationale (can search for info online if you’re interested) from Australia. They’re bothAMAZING…

It’s really sad that people dont even bother to be courteous anymore.
Sorry you became a victim. Hope it’s healing well. xx

yikes, i hope your feet heals soon! i thought rush hour in Singapore was bad enough. But after reading your entry, i’m quite relieved that it’s not as bad as in Shanghai! i really wonder why these people feel the NEED to shove and push. Seriously, uncivilized much?

it’s kind of sad to see the singapore government having to educate singaporeans about graciousness. have you ads on the mrt? it’s really quite a joke.

Heh yeah, rush hour in Shanghai is way worse…

China REALLY needs that “courtesy begins with me” campaign too! but i heard they did a “no spitting” campaign and that didn’t work – no one listens and too hard to control (ie. fine/jail bad people)

Oh my goodness! That looked so bad! My heart skipped a beat when I read the part where you said your foot got under the door! Thank God it wasn’t crushed. I think you should stick to taxis or maybe bicycles from now on. Sounds like too much hassle to just use the public transport.

During the last national conference, some instructors were recounting their rude encounters with the locals when they went to China. They also said they ended up having to quarrel with them all the time because of the shoving/pushing thing. Seems like it’s the worst in Shanghai. My friend who has a brother working there visits the city sometimes and he said whenever he visits, he always ends up scolding people on the streets. Can just imagine how stressful that is.

Anyway, hope it heals soon! Take care!

It’s just all so crap.. sigh… Def not taking a bicycle tho, it’s like having a death wish here in China πŸ˜›

Problem is that ratio of rude ppl here is much higher. Thankfully there are still some great/polite people, that make it better!!

Maybe you can book a cab that takes you to and from work everyday at the same time? Kinda like a personal driver but cab. My mom did that once, but not in China, so wouldn’t know if it was a common practice there.

omg! and ouch! I’m glad that it’s getting better, but do consider the tetanus (sp?) jab. Hope it recovers in time for you to wear your fab shoes for the wedding.

I’m amazed you braved the bus crowd.

The shoving is normal, sad but true. And they get surprised when foreigners react to their lack of social graces.

oh my gosh. i’m sorry to say this but those people seem to be very crude. I’m sorry that this happened to you! Hopefully your injury heals up well! πŸ™‚ Cheer up!

Yeah, now I totally appreciate public transport in other countries πŸ˜› The awesome thing about Shanghai’s though is the price – about US$0.30 for a trip as far as you want to go!! in Australia it’s about US$3-4 whihch is just insane :X

I don’t know why people are like that either, except actually… people can be just as rude here in Australia (had a bad experience with a rude secretary today) but maybe it’s just exacerbated with SO many people in China?

That whole experience sounds so terrifying! My biggest fear is getting a shoelace stuck in the top of an escalator… *shiver* and it sounds like you basically experienced that with the bus. D: I hope it heals well.

Yeah that would be similiar! Man the pressure and that pulling feeling.. *shudder*… I definitely don’t want to experience that every again..

The feet injury looks really bad, I hope it heals quick! I would be so stressed taking the bus… Are you going to start taking a taxi more often from now on?

I try and catch a cab whenever I am, but it’s so stressful fighting for one (assuming I can actually find one) that most of the time it’s actually easier via bus :X

your foot looks terrible and painful. You should get it checked out by a doctor just in case…..you don’t want it infected and end up getting blood poisoning.

Best to take the cab from now on until at least after your wedding. I can’t believe how rude people over there can be!

It’s dry now and scabbed over so don’t need a doc I think.. just hope it totally heals up over the next few days!

oh no, that looks terrible, i hope it heals soon!

cabs are so cheap in china, it’s not worth taking the bus! you can always go local some other way πŸ™‚

It’s really sad that people dont even bother to be courteous anymore.
Sorry you became a victim. Hope it’s healing well. xx

Oh no you poor thing! *hugs* I have only had one Shanghai bus experience, not by choice and I hated every second of it. It was a horrible experience and I honestly feared for my life. You may want to stick to cabs … they are relatively inexpensive, not sure if it’s worth the bus experience on a regular basis.

I guess it’s pretty amazing i’ve gone 5 months so far and only got ingured now… to put a positive spin on it, heh!

I can’t take cabs, there aren’t any at peak hour after work πŸ™

Poor Bev πŸ™ Do they have feedback forms/e-mail addresses where you can complain about the buses?
Hoping that it heals before your wedding *hugs*

Heh it’s china though.. no such thing as complaining about something like that, they’d probably laugh in my face πŸ˜› Sad, but true!

Owww! Poor Bev, that looks very painful. Your story of what’s normal for chinese commuters explains some of the behaviour I’ve seen from chinese people in Sydney. I couldn’t understand it before, but now I do. They just think shoving is normal.

Heh yeah that’s exactly it. I used to be horrified about it when I was in Syd too but now that I’m here, I realise it’s just seen as normal behaviour!

OUCH!!
Get a tetanus jab!! Someone stepped on my toe with her heels and it cut the skin so deep it was bleeding for awhile. Tet jab prevents an infection..

I think u shld cab to work next time, no matter how near it is.. my gf used to cab everywhere when she was in shanghai .

anyway, another dumb deal i find abt taking cabs in shanghai is tt people also RUN & RUSH & BUMP u off the cab. Wah liewz.

You’re right, i should feel lucky cos i’td be SO MUCH worse if i didn’t have my shoe on..

I would take a cab, if I could find em! it’s so hard and you’re right, also a lot of fighting to get one πŸ™

OHMYGOD! πŸ™ So sorry. Hope it heals soon, and please have it checked just to be sure. That’s crazy and the photo HURTS!!! I can only imagine how it really must have hurt (and I have a pretty good tolerance for pain, too).

Seriously, this sounds like it was written about the Manila buses. Not that I’ve ever dared tried ’em… the buses here are privately operated and no one cares to even regulate them, really. The buses are wild, the bus drivers even wilder. Defensive driving in Manila is like, a MUST. Ughhh.

Ok, I’ll stop complaining. But I hope you feel better and you have that injury checked. πŸ™

It’s all so crap. Bleh! But yeah, it’s like a crazy wild free-for-all on public transport here.. like no one can control themselves. It’s INSANE

Omg. Did you see a doc to see if all is right under the skin? That HAS to heal up completely in a couple of weeks but I see that the colorful rainbow colour bruise has yet to form! Or else, there’s always make-up. πŸ˜‰ The pressure sounds horrific, I cannot imagine!

Don’t bother taking the buses next time. It’s not worth it to have your day spoilt seeing ugly manners.

I haven’t seen a doc since it’s getting better but man, I’m glad this ddin’t happen a few days before the wedding! Made me realise I gotta take care of myself , at least for the next 3 weeks…. PX

Oh my gosh that doesn’t look very good. Have you applied any cream? Methinks if it continues to hurt, you may want to go get it checked. I’m also praying your leg gets better by the time you put on your Christian Dior shoes.

That is terrible. I read your tweet regarding your foot and I didn’t think the damage would be to that extent! I hope you’re healing.

I’ve been to China twice and seriously, I can’t get over how RUDE the people are. I don’t understand why they push you.

China is so beautiful and it’s developing wonderfully but people needs to attend SOCIAL MANNERS classes! UGH!
