Uncategorized YUYUAN GARDENS – FAIL 6 February 2009

So we spent the afternoon wandering around our apartment area… which took us to Yuyuan Garden, a garden built in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) many many moons ago. It’s basically now a tourist hotspot, with lots of little shops and stalls spruiking their wares and a TON of seedy looking guys sidling up to you going “watchbag” incessantly. Yep, you definitely are in tourist central!

Yuyuan garden has a lot of little bits and bobs to see though, and we would have thoroughly enjoyed poking our noses around and checking it all out.. if not for the MASSIVE crowds. Our jaws dropped when we walked close – the plate was literally PACKED TO THE BRIM. Unbelievably so. It was basically shoulder-to-shoulder contact with everyone, and you couldn’t really move. If there’s one thing I hate, it’s people in my personal space and worse, people touching me *shudders*. So I lasted for only a few minutes before I felt like I’d go insane, and we squeezed ourselves out of the place.

It’s odd, because “Yu” in Chinese means pleasing and satisfying, and this garden was specially built for a place for the people to enjoy a tranquil and happy time in their old age. I couldn’t imagine anything further from the truth πŸ˜› I think we’ll go check it out when it’s less crowded…..

We headed outside, turned a corner, and found ourselves in a sort of pet street! It was like an open-air mall on the street, with loads of small stalls selling the most adorable animals – puppies, kittens, rabbits, hamsters, chinchillas, etc… All the animals looked really clean, well-fed and healthy. I was a bit surprised, thought I’d find really poorly-treated animals but nope, they looked even healthier and cleaner than the ones in Australian pet stores! Of course we looked all round for ferrets but there were none πŸ™ They had chinchillas though which were so so tame and adorable and cuddly and SUPER SOFT!!!! It was heartbreaking to walk away from the place without a puppy or a chinchilla… ahhhh…..

Small side streets in the city

Really unattractive photo of us!

Man it was packed….

More people than you can shake a stick at

So we escaped after 5 minutes and found a little street that sold cute pets!

Really smart bird that was taught to do all sorts of tricks

The Yu Yuan buildings are beautiful! I really like buildings from the traditional/ancient times!

Yeah, I would be freaked out if I had random people touching me, and losing my personal space

Yeah.. the people all packed in together was a bit gross. But if it were more chill, the place would have been sooooo nice!

oh! it wasn’t so crowded the last time I was there. There is a famous place there that sells Xiao Long Baos (dumplings) though. I tried it – not bad – but what I really liked were their spring rolls. There was really crispy and tasty and had some really soft tofu inside which made it interesting!

Ah yes! But there’s always a 30min queue at that place and we’re too lazy, hehe. Are they better than Din tai Fung, ya think?

Ooo, I think the queue could have been for takeaway. We went upstairs and saw many empty seats and just sat down! Went at night though. It was not bad but the spring rolls made more of an impression coz they were a little different. haha πŸ™‚

We went tonight! πŸ™‚ Got the spring rolls with the soft tofu inside.. it was so incredibly oily, but pretty tasty πŸ˜›

Yuyuan Gardens is insane on a weekend (as are most places in china… I kind of think chinese people just like to go where other people are going…)!!! But you can buy traditional/trinkety/old school China items for VERY cheap if you bargain hard! πŸ™‚ You can get them down to like 30% of the price (only because their initial price is so over-inflated).

We’re going to HangZhou next wkend.. do you reckon i’ts gonna be madness or not too bad? I’m so scared of people.. esp since here they love to shov me πŸ™

Well.. Hangzhou is not so far so honestly if it’s just too crowded you can always go back at some later time (a week day and not a Chinese holiday perhaps?) and see it again! I heard they’re building another Hangzhou-Shanghai railway so it’s only going to take 28 mins to get there! That’s quicker than getting out to the further parts of Pudong!!!!

And when in China, do as the Chinese do. Shove right back! πŸ™‚
