Festivals, Uncategorized HOPE STREET MARKETS 2008 1 June 2008

I’m totally obsessed with Etsy, so was freakin’ excited when I found out the annual real-life Etsy markets were in town, the Hope Street Markets! Oh happy day!! So I dragged Mum, Dad and Chris to go ferret around those markets πŸ˜‰ The concept is totally awesome, but unfortunately far far too crowded for my liking. It got really hard to walk around and was a bit stressful trying to dodge around everyone and see all the goodies on offer.

The little stalls offering homemade bits and bobs were really fun to check out, but to be honest, Etsy is still heaps better πŸ˜› There’s an (obviously) wider selection on Etsy and the stuff’s just nicer in general IMHO. Also, these real-life markets were incredibly expensive!! A simple thin tee was about $50.. gah! So most of it didn’t appeal to me.. except a pair of really pretty dragonfly and feather earrings for $25 which I thought was one of the more reasonable items. It’s really delicate and so sweet!

Such a touristy shot

How pretty is the illustration?!

Too many people in too small a space

Really pretty handbags

Weird voodoo-like dolls

Chris looking not too impressed with them

Gorgeous leather accessories

Mum and I checking out the clothing

The earrings I got!

From Etsy – super cute custom-made wine charms!

Custom-made cherry earrings

I love the earrings that you got. So pretty and delicate. I agree that stuff at those markets are expensive. When I went to the Farmer’s Market in Edmonton – they had a jewelry stall with a pretty bracelet for $78!

Wow that’s $$! It’s hard to tell with jewellery.. sometimes the DIY stuff is $5 and sometimes it’s $50, and I’m not savvy enough to figure out the quality to infer if it’s worth it etc…

I will say as an artist/crafter, that some things on Etsy (and even eBay) may be underpriced because no one would pay what they’re really worth in materials and time spent. So maybe that Market is filled with people who are okay with charging what they’re worth and waiting awhile to sell it lol

Ohhh true, I guess because there’s so much supply online, the demand goes down and hence the prices. But I’m spoiled by those prices, so the $50+ tees totally scare me πŸ˜›

Now that I don’t get lol My grandmother buys sweatshirts and does beautiful silk ribbon embroidery on them, ten hours at least a shirt. And a lot of people balk at giving her more than forty dollars.
