FOOD, Friends, Uncategorized AN AFTERNOON @ NEWTOWN 9 April 2008

Ventured out to Newtown for the very first time over the weekend. I’d never shopped there before and to be honest, didn’t even know shops existed there. I was pre-warned. Mum said “Be careful” when walking around, and a friend muttered “freaks and geeks” when I mentioned it. Not to be deterred from finding a new shopping spot, I trooped there with a girl friend for lunch and shopping.

Newtown’s obviously a foodie paradise. There’s restaurants up and down the (very long) street, and I hear they’re famous for Thai. So that’s exactly what we had! I selected the Beef Massaman curry which (I didn’t realise) was obviously a dish for 2 to share. Was feeling pretty wonky afterwards with all that beef and potatoes stuffed in my belly πŸ˜› It was goooood though. Not very authentic as it wasn’t spicy, but it was still pretty tasty and the beef was tender enough (but could be even more tender). The Vegetarian Fried Rice was delicious though, I had a mouthful and the smoky flavour was awesome.

With my food. Yum yum.

Beef Massman curry!

Meet the vegetarian foodie πŸ˜›

Vegetarian fried rice… mmmmmm…..

Then it was a serious bout of shopping up and down all of Newtown. We both bought super cute Pretty In Pink stuff, which I’ll take photos of when I get round to it πŸ˜› I like the shops at Newtown – they’re really edgy and most are more Emily Strange than Alannah Hill. I love both brands, so the edginess suited me just fine. Didn’t buy any of that stuff though, because it’s actually super $$!! For no-name edgy clothes! No thanks… So we ended up buying super girl/pink stuff in an area dominated by goth shops. Haha.

About 2 hours later, we decided we were hungry again and it was time for……… milkshakes and churros!! A FABULOUS combination. I had the strawberry smoothie and though I often don’t drink them (so I can’t really compare), this one was fantastic – it was thick with blended fresh strawberries and cold milk. Mmmmm!! Not too sweet either, that’s why I don’t like regular milkshakes and their crappy “strawberry” syrups. I thought the churros were fantastic too, better than the ones at the original San Churros. These were a bit fatter and so were crisp on the outside, but soft and moist on the inside. However, the dipping chocolate obviously wasn’t as good, since they just use the cheap stuff. It was expensive, at $9 for 3 sticks, but I guess that’s Sydney for you :X

Hey! nothing wrong with Newtown.. I love that area. A good friend of mine and her hubby has been living there for over 5 years now! So, everytime I venture into Sydney, I stay with her, and explore that place. An uncle of mine owns a pizza/ice cream place there (well my mum’s nephew???).. Hang on.. that means he’s like my cousin???? LOL I’m a shocker =)

I think it’s awesome for the non-standard type stores, I get so sick of Westfield sometimes. But I def dont’ want to be going through the station there late at night!

Ahh what pizza/ice cream place is it? I should go visit next time πŸ˜€

It was really fun pottering around all the non-standard type stores.. Pretty In Pink was the best though I reckon! πŸ˜›

Yeah… Newtown is truly the place for freaks (ie Arts students, goths, and people whom just wanna be different!). If the people weren’t enough of a giveaway, it’ll be the number of op shops and band/theatre/performing arts posters stuck on everything with a surface!! ha!

I stay away from Newtown like the plague, but that’s more so because I have a far higher chance of doing Heidi Klum in the bum than of finding parking in Newtown at any time of day πŸ˜› It has an awesome climbing gym though!

It def was an experience.. esp when we had 2 goths covered in fake blood and sprawled on the floor trying to grab people’s ankles. TRES WEIRD.

I live near newtown, it’s not dangerous, I love it there.
Its just great to find clothes that are actually different from all the clothes that look exactly the same in the city etc…

I reckon the station would get scary when returning home late at night, but I really liked the shops. It sure is a nice change from the standard Westfields!

Erm, beef massaman curry isn’t meant to be spicy. Plus you can’t take spicy food anyway! :p I wanna see what you bought though!

haha i didn’t know that! I thought it was meant to be creamy and sweet, but still a bit spicy. I’ve had better around Kingsford and chinatown, but it still wasn’t too bad

that choc milkshake looks delish!
i had no idea what churros was before this post- they look like fried salami sticks- ugh now that would be interesting….:/
