Chris, FOOD, Uncategorized VALENTINES DAY 2008 17 February 2008

Valentines Day was a pretty low-key affair for us, because there’s quite a lot of travel this year for us (Russia, Hong Kong, Swiss Alps, Paris, Singapore, + more… WHEW!), so we want to save as much $$ as possible. Which meant we decided to go for the more romantic/thoughtful route instead πŸ™‚ So Chris took me to Kingsford Chinese for dinner, which holds a lot of fond memories for us as that was where we first started dating 8 (!!) years ago.. and was our date-place for all the years we were at Uni. The owners recognise us, we always order our same standard dishes, and it’s just a “Chris & Bev place” to us.

Dinner was, obviously, our standard dishes.. with a Beef with Honey Black Pepper as takeaway for the next night. Perfect, comfort food. Except that we walked out stuffed to the brim, yikes!! All very worth it and it was really nice spending Valentines Day at “our” place, for old time’s sake πŸ™‚

I decided to make him a Valentines Day cake though…. in particular a Kahlua Chocolate Cake. I thought it’ll be fairly simple to make but HELL NO!!! 2 hours of baking and over 30mins of cleaning later.. I can categorically say I will never ever make it again πŸ˜‰ It was really difficult to make, in particular because I decided to double the recipe so as to make more (in the form of cupcakes) for friends and colleagues. I realised after I made that decision that my mixing bowls simply weren’t big enough….. resulting in batter flying EVERYWHERE. I was covered in the stuff, like a crazy walking cake-batter person. It was on the floor, walls, benchtops, even the ceiling!!! On top of that, I broke 2 mugs in the process because I was so frazzled with trying to keep it all under control. Argh.

As it turns out though, the cake was lovely and I painstakingly put on the little silver balls in the shape of a heart.. taking FOREVER since you can’t make a mistake dropping them into the soft chocolate topping. Ack!! I’ve never actually poured so much energy, effort and love into a cake IN MY ENTIRE LIFE…. but it was worth it to see Chris’ face when I gave it to him πŸ™‚

Mixing the cocoa in the flour, butter, espresso and kahlua (I used double the amount – hee!)

Adding in the whipped egg whites (you can see how full my mixing bowl was, YIKES)

I made a million cupcakes. Maybe more.

Ding! All done.

Also made a big cake for Chris

wow would love to taste the Kahlua Chocolate Cake!! πŸ™‚ it looks delicious!!!:)
did Chris eat it all?! how did it taste? was it rich and moist?! *drool*

aw. πŸ™‚ That’s cute that you were back in the same old restaurant for your valentine’s date. πŸ™‚ And I love that cake. It’s very sweet. πŸ™‚

And you didn’t bring any cupcakes for us on Saturday??? Oh Bev…..

Wow… I can’t believe how full that mixing bowl is! I hope you also threw your clothes into the oven after, you’d get at least another two cakes worth out of them seeing as you’d probably have that much batter splashed all over you!

And it wouldn’t be a Bev Cake if it didn’t have her trademark silver balls πŸ˜›

I wanted to bring ’em on Sat! But then TL said she was bringing dessert so that veetoed my idea πŸ˜‰ Ahhh but the Patisserie cakes were gooooooooooood
