Bunch of us went to the Argyle for drinks on Friday night. It’s a lovely pub, right in The Rocks area and very sexy inside. It was still chucking down with rain, but we’re all insane and still braved the weather so we could go drinking, haha. But afterwards, we headed off to Sushi Suma in Surrey Hills for a (late) dinner – the place came recommended and apparently they serve great Japanese food for a reasonable price.

It’s a teeny tiny place, not too flashy from the outside so it’s pretty easy to miss. The restaurant is basically a long corridor with tables lined along either side, and the kitchen down the back. Probably around 10 tables and apparently there’s always a line to be seated.. but since it was such a miserable night, we only had to wait for around 10 mins, *whew*! We quickly settled into our seats and promptly ordered – it didn’t take very long since the menu’s not very extensive. It has the main Japanese food featured and that’s about it. But they obviously stick with what they do best, as the food was pretty good! Everything was served pretty quickly and we were presented with the bill just as we finished off our dishes.. so the next set of people could be seated at our table πŸ˜‰

I actually think my favourite dish was the Edamame – perfectly steamed, warm and slightly salty. They were so tasty and addictive – kind of like eating chips, but very healthy πŸ˜‰ Sadly, no dessert.. I wouldn’t have declined a lovely Black Sesame ice cream or the like, but they gave us the bill even before inquiring about dessert! Then again, it didn’t even look like they had dessert on the menu??

It’s a bustling, obviously popular restaurant. A great little Japanese find but I don’t think I would bother making my way to Surrey Hills when there’s also great Japanese in the City where I live πŸ˜›

Complimentary appetiser of noodles

Edamame – one of the nicest I’ve had

Complimentary Agedashi Tofu (just average tasting) and Miso Soup (very lovely)

Sushi Deluxe Platter – Mmm! Lovely, fresh sushi

Cream Croqettes with Crab Meat – so so nice, crisp on the outside
and silky and creamy on the inside

Unagi (eel) and rice – this was a massive portion. Yum.

Chicken Katsu – 8 MASSIVE chunks of deep fried chicken
So good but soooo filling!

Very yummy looking Japanese food! It’s so hard to find good homestyle Japanese food these days. A lot of Japanese food they serve now have that *fusion flair* which I’m not really into. *^^*

yeah i agree. sometimes i like fusion though, like at Kobe Jones or Tetsuya.. but normally good ‘ol Jap food is so hard to find!

yummo! I haven’t been back to Sushi Suma in over 10 years now. Back then it was the only decent Japanese restaurant around that was of good value. But now there are heaps that we haven’t gone back. Maybe one day in the near future I may pay a visit after seeing this post.

yeh it definitely was the only decent japanese restaurant many years back when I used to go every few weeks. Still great food and good value though- I mean where else gives complimentary soup+tofu?!

I’ve been eating there since 4 yrs ago! My hubby ate there for a longer period though. I find that the portion has shrunk quite a bit and the price has increased over the years. Probably cos they shifted few shops down quite recently and did some major renovations. The old restaurant used to be much smaller! Cream croqette is my all time fave! If you order the set dinner, you will get green tea ice-cream for free! Pretty good…it’s actually vanilla ice-cream with green tea syrup over it.

I didn’t realise they’d been there for so long! For the price the portions were still big though, so I was impressed.

And I was wondering why some people had ice cream served and we didn’t, heh!

It was a fave of mine – still is – back in the uni days. The dinner sets are the best value. Complimentary tofu and noodles is definitely a plus. I love the eel, but now do it at home (cheapskate!). My fave is the teriyaki chicken, followed closely by the tempura. And you can do the icecream 2 ways – green tea syrup with vanilla icecream, or mush it all up and make it green tea icecream! Dessert selection is very small – basically the green tea ice cream! He he.

I agree with the eel – they just use the frozen kind so might as well buy it for cheap at home and cook it up yourself!

I wish we had the ice cream, it sounds sooo nice
